Spiral Progression Approach in Disciplinal Approach In teaching

teaching science science

-Concepts are introduced at an early age and re-taught in

succeeding years in an increasingly sophisticated fashion.
-Building on pupils’ prior knowledge and skills to allow gradual
mastery from one grade level to the next.
-Exposing students to a wide variety of concepts/topics, skills
and attitudes that are deemed of “continual concern of
everyone” until they are mastered
-Key concepts are presented repeatedly throughout the
curriculum, but with deepening layers of complexity.
-Student “spirals upwards” as the new knowledge is introduced
in next lessons
-Enable him/her to reinforce what is already learned-

-This approach is also known as the subject approach or the

traditional approach.
-Thus the approach in which every subject is taught as a
separate discipline is called as disciplinary approach.
-This approach is based on the premise that, the subject is a
store house of facts, methods, theories, concepts &
generalizations
-In disciplinary approach the focus is more on the subject &
its content rather than the process.
-It shall be the responsibility of teacher to show the
connection between different disciplines (subjects).

1. In a Venn diagram, create a comparison of Spiral Progression versus Disciplinal

Approach in teaching science in the country.

Spiral Progression approach

That is why it is called the spiral progression approach because the concepts in various science
subjects will gradually be taught to the students until their knowledge in science expands as
they end at the higher grade level. The spiral progression approach will gradually teach little by
little the different types of concepts of science subjects to the students. The teacher will no
longer focus on just one subject.

Disciplinal approach

This approach is also known as the subject approach or the traditional approach. as each
subject is separately taught by the teacher in the area of the particular subject. For example
science was traditionally taught as a subject with different compartments such as physics,
biology, and chemistry as separate components of the science subject.
In disciplinary approach the focus is more on the subject & its content.

2. Which of these approaches most fitted to Filipino Students? Make a brief personal
evaluation of the implementation of these curriculum.

- The approach that is most fitted to Filipino Students is the Spiral Progression

Approach because at the early-stage students already taught about some of the science

subject and learned from it, then as their grade level is increasing more and more

details are introduced and the subject is reemphasized many times to help enter them in

long-term memory. That is why it is called the spiral progression approach because the

concepts in various science subjects will gradually be taught to the students until their

knowledge in science expands as they end at the higher grade level. And also, the

teacher will no longer focus on just one subject.

3. Identify public and private secondary schools in the Philippine and cite their best
practices in implementing Spiral Progression approach in teaching Science.
- Koronadal National Comprehensive High School (KNCHS)- The KNCHS uses the
spiral progression approach because It offers STE program which the student broadens
their knowledge in science and mathematics subject.
-Philippine Science High School - Soccsksargen Region Campus (PSHS-SRC)-
They Koronadal also have one of the campus of PSHS and there are also lots of
student who qualified to enter this school because It grants scholarships to students
who are gifted in science and mathematics all over Soccsksargen and neighboring
places.
4. If a grade school student wishes to enroll at PSHS, what important preparations
she/he should undergo? Make a list of requirements and application process for
aspiring students of Pisay.
If a grade school student wishes to enroll PSHS, She/He must:
- Have a chance to take up the PSHS entrance exam – called the National
Competitive Examinations (NCE).
- Belong to the top 10% of his/her graduating class.
- Have at least an aptitude in Science or Math.
- Transferee’s also have a chance to take placement exam but they should wait
for slots vacated by students who are dismissed or are transferred to another
PSHS campuses.

5. How is the establishment of PSHS in the country, helped the government in its thrust
to advance science and math education?
- The PSHS System prepares its students for careers in Science and Technology and
contributes to nation building by helping the country attain a critical mass of
professionals and leaders in Science and Technology.

6. What is the role of DOST-SEI in the advancement of Science and Technology in the
country? Identify few notable programs of this agency that helped many Filipino
students in pursuing Science related careers.

The main agency responsible for managing science and technology is the Department

of Science and Technology (DOST). This Institution is hands on in scientific and

technological progress made by the Philippines. DOST sharpens the talent of a

science student and they create students who can be called young inventors, This
young inventors will one day contribute in growth of Science and Technology in the

country and in Nation building.

Some of the DOST notable programs that helps Filipino students in pursuing science
related careers:
Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) is one of the programs being
implemented by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department
of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) which is conducted all throughout the regions
nationwide to recognize the indispensability of the Filipino inventors for national
economic development.
Winning in RICE are automatically qualified to the National

National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE)

- gives encouragement and recognition to inventors so that they could maximize their
capability and productivity through the cash rewards and other forms of assistance and
promotional support.
- major highlight of the NICE celebration, is a competition for the public and private
sector inventors and researchers.
