ASME Sect. VIII Div.1 2007 ed.+ Add.2009

VII. Requirements for Hydrostatic Test as per UG-99

(a) A hydrostatic test shall be conducted on all vessel after:

1. All fabrication has been completed, except for operation which could not be performed prior to the test
such as weld end preparation, cosmetic grinding on the base material which does not affect the required
thickness.
2. All examinations have been performed, except those required after test.

(b) Except as otherwise permitted in (a) above and 27-3, vessel design for internal pressure shall be subjected to
hydrostatic test pressure which at every point in the vessel is at least equal to 1.3 times the maximum allowable
working pressure to be marked on the vessel multiplied by the lowest ratio (for the material of which vessel
constructed) of the stress value S for the test temperature on the vessel to the stress value S for the design
temperature.

No. Vessel component Thk, in
(test temp.) (design temp.) new & cold
1 Shell 0.59 209.31 20,000.00 20,000.00 272.10
2 Head 0.63 229.30 20,000.00 20,000.00 298.09

Therefore :
Maximum allowable working pressure = 209.31 psig 14.43 barg
Hydrostatic test pressure = 1.3xMAWPxS/St = 272.10 psig 18.76 barg (max)
= 245.11 psig 16.90 barg (min)
