IV. Calculation of Reinforcement for Openings in Shell & Formed Head per UG-36 & UG-37

UG-36(b)(1) The rules in UG-36 through UG-43 apply to openings not exceeding the following:
- for vessels 60 in. (1520 mm) inside diameter and less, one-half the vessel diameter, but not to exceed 20 in.
(508 mm)
- for vessels over 60 in. (1520 mm) inside diameter, one-third the vessel diameter, but not to exceed 40 in.
(1000 mm)
For openings exceeding this limits, supplemental rules of 1-7 shall be satisfied in addition to UG-36
through UG-43.

UG-36(c)(3) Openings in vessel not subject to rapid fluctuations in pressure do not require reinforcement other
than that inherent in the construction under the following conditions:
(a) welded or brazed connections attached in accordance with the applicable rules and with a finished opening
not larger than:
- 3 1/2 in. (89 mm) diameter - in vessel shells or heads 3/8 in. (10 mm) or less in thickness
- 2 3/8 in. (60 mm) diameter - in vessel shells or heads over 3/8 in. (10 mm) in thickness.
