V. Calculation of Strength of Reinforcement per UG-41

UW-16(a)(1) Between the nozzle and the shell, head, etc. form a category D weld joint.
UW-16(a)(2) The location and minimum size of attachment welds for nozzles and other connection
shall conform to the requirement of UW-16 in addition to the strength calculations required in UW-15.

Symbol :
t = nominal thickness of vessel shell or head
tn = nominal thickness of nozzle wall
te = thickness of reinforcing plate
tmin = the smaller of ¾ in. or the thickness of the thinner of the parts joined by a fillet, single-
bevel, or single-J weld
tc = not less than the smaller of ¼ in. or 0.7 tmin (inside corner welds may be further limited

For N1, N2, N3, N4, N5,and M1 nozzles Fig. UW-16.1(e) (without reinforcement plate)

t1 + t2 >= 1 ¼ tmin

t1 or t2 not less than the smaller of ¼ in. or 0.7 tmin

UG-41(b) On each side of the plane defined in UG-40(a), the strength of the attachment joining the
vessel wall and reinforcement or any two parts of the attached reinforcement shall be at
least equal to the smaller of:
(1) the strength in tension of the cross section of the element or elements of reinforcement
being considered
(2) the strength in tension of the area defined in UG-37 less the strength in tension of the
reinforcing area which is integral in the vessel wall as permitted by UG-40(d)(1)
(3) for welded attachments, see UW-15 for exemptions to strength calculation

W1-1 = (A2 + A5 + A41 + A42 ) Sv weld load for strength path 1-1 [UG-41(b)(1)]

W2-2 = (A2 + A3 + A41 + A43 + 2 tntfr1) Sv weld load for strength path 2-2 [UG-41(b)(1)]

W3-3 = (A2 + A3 + A5 + A41 + A42 + A43 + 2tntfr1) Sv weld load for strength path 3-3 [UG-41(b)(1)]
with reinforcing element

W = [A - A1 + 2 tn fr1 (E1 t - F tr )] Sv total weld load [UG-41(b)(2)]

General notes:
(a) Areas A1, A2, A3, A5 and A41 are modified by frx factors.
(b) Nomenclature is the same as in UG-37 and Fig. UG-37.1.

UG-45(c) The allowable stress value for shear in the nozzle wall shall be 70% of the allowable
tensile stress for nozzle material.
UW-15(c) The allowable stress value for groove and fillet welds in percentages of stress value
for the vessel materials which are used with UG-41 calculation are follows:
- groove-weld tension = 74%
- groove-weld shear = 60%
- fillet-weld shear = 49%

S1 = 0.49 * (Sv , Sn or Sp whichever is smaller) outward nozzle fillet-weld shear stress

W1 =  / 2 * do * toutward * S1 outward nozzle fillet-weld shear

S2 = 0.49 * (Sn or Sv whichever is smaller) inward nozzle fillet-weld shear stress

W2 =  / 2 * do * tinward * S2 inward nozzle fillet-weld shear

S3 = 0.70 * Sn nozzle wall shear stress

W3 =  / 2 * davg * tn * S3 nozzle wall shear

S4 = 0.49 * (Sp or Sv whichever is smaller) outer element fillet-weld shear stress

W4 =  / 2 * Dp * tpad * S4 outer element fillet-weld shear

S5 = 0.74 * (Sp or Sn whichever is smaller) inner element groove-weld tension stress

W5 =  / 2 * do * te * S5 inner element groove-weld tension

S6 = 0.6 * (Sp or Sn whichever is smaller) inner element groove weld shear stress
W6 =  / 2 * do * tpad * S6 inner element groove weld shear
