SEAMAN

● A sailor, seaman, mariner, or seafarer is a person who works aboard a watercraft as part of its crew, and may
work in any one of a number of different fields that are related to the operation and maintenance of a ship.
● A person who helps in the handing of ship at sea.

● Being a seafarer enables one to see the world and experience new things. This point is an enormous benefit.
Seafaring is also often connected to wealth, because of trade. There is a sense of adventure with seafaring that is
appealing.
MASTER(CAPTAIN)

The Master is the person holding the Deck Class I certificate of competency (COC) (Unlimited/Foreign going). He is
the commanding person of the ship and the highest ranked Deck Officer.
People say that if the ship is an island, the Master is king of that island. That doesn’t mean that if he tells the crew
to jump into the sea, they will do it.
Neverthless, the Master has power over other ranks, and can dismiss any crew member from the ship under
reasonable circumstances. A good Master will always care about the safety of his crew more than anything else; if
it comes to the ship or someone's life, it is always the person’s life.
The duties and responsibilities of the Master are as follows:
1.Overall, in charge of the safety of the crew, ship, and cargo.
2.Commands the ship. He should be present on the bridge while arriving at and leaving ports, in shallow waters,
during reduced visibility, during any equipment malfunctions, when other navigation officers are unable to handle
the ship during heavy traffic, and during any emergency or abnormal situation.
3.Implements law and order onboard ship.
4.Signs bill of lading for cargo.
5.Though the Chief Engineer is in charge of the engine room, the engines are at the Master’s disposal.
6.Takes disciplinary actions against any crew member, although if the crew member is from the Engine
Department, the Chief Engineer is to be consulted as well.
7.Arranges for provisions, stores, fuel (bunkers) (under the Chief Engineer`s guidance), garbage disposal, shore
passes, salary particulars and cash advances.
8.In port, deals with port authorities, immigration authorities, customs authorities, and narcotics authorities.
9.Assists any other vessel in an emergency.
10.Trains the crew and conducts drills.
11.Serves as contact person for communication with the office.
12.If the ship is abandoned in an emergency, the verbal order has to be given by the Master.
13.The Master’s decision is final. Whether right or wrong, the crew has to stick to it at that particular moment.
Importance of seafarers in our lives and how Sailors Society is helping them
Look around you. Your phone, your computer, your cup of coffee: 90% of everything you use comes by sea,
transported by an often-invisible workforce of 1.6 million seafarers. Without them, we would miss most of the
things we rely on every day.
To bring those things to us, seafarers in turn miss many of the things we take for granted. Life at sea can be
rewarding and fulfilling, but it’s not without its challenges. Seafarers leave their homes and loved ones to go to
sea for up to a year at a time, facing extreme loneliness, violent storms, the threat of piracy and even hijacking by
terrorists.
Many of these men and women come from the world’s poorest communities, with limited career options.
A Seaman’s salary is one of the most mysterious, well-hidden and sought after figures to many people. In fact,
they are one of the highest paid workers around the world. they salaries on a per month basis are much bigger
compared to other land-based professions. They been sailing with different nationalities and they found out that
we all share this same privilege. Overall, the offshore industry enjoys the biggest wage. The highest pay a seaman
could receive is USD 1,000.00 PER DAY! You have to be a Master Mariner on a Jack-up Barge to earn that. On the
other hand, the average salary of Masters and Chief Engineers is around USD 11,000.00.
