Play, Sing and Dance: A Road to Recovery for Displaced Children After Sulawesi Quake
PALU, Indonesia: “Earthquake! Tsunami! Run! Run! Run!” A little boy shouted out a warning to his
friends inside a temporary shelter in Palu. Screams filled the tent as everyone ran around, laughing
excitedly at the game they played.
The double disaster mostly affected the provincial capital Palu and nearby Donggala. More than 2,000
lives were lost and close to 90,000 people displaced, including some 30 children taking refuge on the
lawn of Central Sulawesi’s Social Affairs Office.
“Our goal is to help these children forget the horrible experience they’ve just been through,” said Karina
Sidik from the Ministry of Social Affairs. Behind her, rows of colorful drawings hung from strings,
animals, flowers, mountains, and a small yellow house under a clear blue sky.
The 26-year-old was one of 10 social workers who ran the ministry’s psycho-social support program for
children affected by the recent disaster. A total of 15 support centers are set to be built in Palu and
Donggala with help from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other child protection
groups. So far, four have been set up, each with social workers who spend several hours a day with the
young ones as they draw, sing and play. The activities were part of the therapy designed to restore their
happiness and social skills after their everyday life was disrupted by the disaster.
Still, some children were still traumatized by what they had been through. “I’m still scared,” a four-year-
old girl told Channel NewsAsia. The quake destroyed her family’s eatery while her home in the
neighborhood of Petobo was also buried by mud from soil liquefaction. “Children are the most
vulnerable group of people in any disaster. Their routine abruptly stops and they need help to restore it in
order to move on,” said another social worker Ramadhani Sri Handayani.

Although most of us learned how to read years ago, the stark and awful truth is that most of us
read laboriously and inefficiently. We crawl along at a rate of 100 to 200 words per minute and don't
understand or remember much of what we've read. An efficient reader ought to fly along at 600 to 1000
words per minute and ought to remember at least 80 percent of everything read! Reading specialists
suggest several ways of increasing reading comprehension. This essay will consider two of these ways.
Always skimming written material first will ensure comprehension by helping you to see how the
material is organized. With a textbook, try glancing at the table of contents first to get an overall picture
of what the book will cover. Then, going chapter by chapter read any lines in boldface print and read the
summary that is often included at the end of the chapter. For a shorter piece of writing—an article or
essay—try reading only the first sentence of each paragraph. Before long, you will be aware of the
smooth and progressive flow of thought. When you have finished skimming in this way, you will be able
to pinpoint the main ideas that the author is stressing. You will also have a rough idea of how the author
is organizing the material to support the points being made. Skimming the material first will aid you in
fully understanding the selection when you reread it later.
Another way to increase your reading comprehension is to give yourself tests. After you read
something, see if you can tell yourself the details of what you have read. Can you enumerate the points in
the order in which the author made them? Do you know the main idea of each paragraph? Could you
coherently outline the author's thoughts without referring to the text? These kinds of questions will test
your reading comprehension. Of course, you aren't expected to memorize and then recite all you read.
But if you can't answer basic questions about the material, go back and read the selection again.

38. What is the text mainly about?

a. How to skim a text
b. How to test yourself
c. How to read effectively
d. How to find reading techniques
e. How to overcome reading problems
