THE PRAMBANAN TEMPLE
The Prambanan Temple Compounds was built in the 10th century. This temple compound is considered
as the most beautiful Hindu temple in the world. The Prambanan Temple is located close to another
famous temple in Indonesia (a Buddhist one), Borobodur Temple Compounds. This temple complex in
Java consists of three main temples. Each of these temples is dedicated to the three great Hindu
divinities: Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The biggest of the three temples is dedicated to Shiva, which
measures at 47 meters in height.

The temple compound was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 for its cultural value. It
is also the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and one of Asia’s biggest. The architecture of the temples
is classified by the use of tall and pointed details, which is common in Hindu type architecture. The
temple attracts several visitors all year round.
The high structures that compose the Prambanan Temple Compounds are reminiscent of a typical Hindu
architectural design. It follows the Mandala temple complex plan, just like Borobodur does.

The base of the temple is known as Bhurloka, which consists of a large space marked by a rectangular
wall. It represents the unholy area in Hindu belief. The central part is the Bhuvarloka. It represents the
central part of the complex or the ‘middle world’ in Hindu belief. Finally, the Svarloka is the top part of
the temple and represents the realm of the gods. This is the holiest zone in the temple.(251 words)

went to Yogya Kraton. We spent around two hours there. We were fortunate on the grounds that we
were driven by a brilliant and amicable aide. At that point we proceeded with our adventure to
Borobudur. We touched base there at four p.m. At 6 p.m. we heard the declaration that Borobudur

Earthquakes-being among the deadliest natural hazards-strike without any prior warning, leaving
catastrophe in their wake with terrible loss of human lives as well as economic loss.

Technically, an earthquake (also known as tremor, quake or temblor) is a kind of vibration through
the earth’s crust. This vibration occurs as a result of powerful movement of rocks in the earth’s crust.
These powerful movements trigger a rapid release of energy that creates seismic waves that travel
through the earth. Earthquakes are usually brief, but may repeat over a long period of time. (Earth
Science 2001).

Earthquakes are classified as large and small. Large earthquakes usually begin with slight tremors
but rapidly take form of violent shocks. The vibrations from a large earthquake last for a few days
known as aftershocks. Small earthquakes are usually slight tremors and do not cause much damage.
Large earthquakes are known to take down buildings and cause death and injury (Richter, 1935).
According to some statistics, there may be an average of 500,000 every year, but only about 100,000 can
be felt and 100 or so can cause damage per year.

Earthquakes are dreaded by everyone.

“Tell me, Simon, what makes you so smart?”
“I wouldn’t share my secret with just anyone,” Simon replied, lowering his voice so the other
shoppers wouldn’t hear. “But since you’re a good and faithful customer, I’ll let you in on it. Fish heads.
You eat enough of them, you’ll be positively brilliant.”
“Do you sell them here?” the customer asked.
“Only $4 a piece,” said Simon.
The customer bought three. A week later, he was back in the store complaining that the fish
heads were disgusting and he wasn’t any smarter.
“You didn’t eat enough,” said Simon. The customer went home with 20 more fish heads. Two
weeks later, he was back and this time he was really angry.
“Hey, Simon,” he complained, “you’re selling me fish heads for $4 a piece when I can buy the
whole fish for $2. You’re ripping me off!”
