TPR Background
TPR is a method developed by Dr. James J. Asher(1977), a professor of psychology at San Jose

State University of California. He developed TPR as a result of his experiences observing young

children their first language. He noticed that interactions between parents and children often

took the form of speech from the parent followed by a physical response from the child. Asher

made three hypothesis based on his observations: first. that language is learned primarily by

listening; second, that language learning must engage the right hemisphere of the brain; and

third, that learning language should not involve any stress.

What is TPR?
Total Physical Response (TPR) is a languange teaching method bouilt around the
coordination of speech and action; it attemps to teach language through physical (motor)
activity.In TPR, instructors give commands to students in the target language, and
students respond with whole-body actions.This method is often used alongside other
method and technique. It is popular with beginners and with young learners, although it
can be used with students of all levels and all age groups

Characteristics of TPR Method

The coordination of speech and action.

Learners roles of listener and performer.
Learner monitor and evaluate their own progress.
Reading and writing is taught after grammar and vocabulary.
Grammar is taught inductively.
Grammar and vocabulary selected according to the situation.
Learning language by gesture (body movement).
The teacher and the students are the actors.
Student should be more active and talkative..
Motorist student.

The Advantages of
TPR Method
-TPR is a lot of fun as learners enjoy it and it
- It works well with mixed-ability classes because the

can lifts the pace of a lesson and the mood; physical actions get across the meaning effectively

so that all learners are able to comprehend and

- TPR is a memorable activity as it assist

apply the target language;
students to recognize phrases or words;
- There is no requirement of preparing a lot of

preparation or materials. The most important part is

-It is good for kinaesthetic learners who

being competent of what you want to practise;

are required to be active in class;

- It can be used both in a large class or in

- It is very effective with teenagers and young

- Whilst it can be used at higher levels TPR is most useful for

beginners. It is also at the higher levels where preparation

becomes an issue for the teacher.

- Students are not generally given the opportunity to express

their own thoughts in a creative way.

- It is easy to overuse TPR. "Any novelty, if carried on too long,

The
will trigger adaptation." Asher writes, "No matter how exciting

and productive the innovation, people will tire of it."

Disadvantages
- The teacher may find that it is limited in terms of language

method.
Certain target languages may not be suited to this

Method - It can be a challenge for shy students.

- It is limited, since everything cannot be explained with this

method. It must be combined with other approaches.

- The method emphasizes imperative constructions, which may

lead to the future inappropriate and rude language of the

learner.

Conclusion

Total Physical Response (TPR) is one of the teaching methods that

emphasize active learning through actions. It means that learners'

speaking skill through listening to their teacher and before requiring them

to speak, and asking them to practice using verbal communication

accompany by physical actions. Three basic steps that used in this method

are to listen, watch, and imitate repeatedly.

Suggestion
TPR should be used in association with other

methods and techniques because certain

target languages may not be suited to this

method. Do not overuse this method because

people will tire of it.
