1. An electronic system contains two identical components which function independently of each other but are
connected in such a way that the system works if at least one of the components functions. The life time of
each component follows continuous distribution with density function:

= ; > 0, > 0.

The following table relates to data on life (in suitable unit of time) of components:

Time 0 – 10 10 – 20 20 – 30 30 – 40 40 – 50 50 – 60
Frequency 106 – K 45 22 15 10 2+K

Here K stands for the last digit of your university roll number. Use the above data to estimate the unknown
parameter and calculate the expected frequency of each class. Also estimate the probabilities that–
(i) the two-component system works for at least 10 units of time;
(ii) out of 10 such systems working independently of each other at least four fail before 10 units of time.

2. A fair die is thrown repeatedly till every face has appeared at least once. Find the distribution of the number
of throws made. 4

3. Suppose K stands for the last digit of your university roll number. A random variable (X) has a binomial
distribution with
15 + = 0,2,3,7,8,9
= 15 − = 1,5,6
15 + 2 = 4

and a unique mode at = 8. If it is known that , the success probability, can assume one of the values
0.35, 0.45, 0.55, 0.65, 0.75 and 0.85, calculate the probability that is strictly positive. 4

4. Suppose stands for the last digit of your university roll number. A trucking network links four cities: A, B,
C and D. The expected travel time for each branch is as follows:
Between City A and City B : (3+K) hours
Between City B and City C : (5+K) hours
Between City C and City D : (2+K) hours
Between City A and City D : (4+K) hours
Assume that the travel times for each of the two branches are independently Normal with 20% coefficient of
variation. Two trucks are dispatched at the same time from A to C, with Truck I going via B and Truck II
via D. What is the probability that Truck I will arrive at the destination earlier than Truck II? 5
5. In this question, stands for the last digit of your roll number, for the second last digit and
= 10 + + 1, i.e. one more than the number represented by the last two digits.
The distribution of height (in cm.) and weight (in kg.) of people is known to be bivariate normal. The mean
height and weight are respectively (174+x) cm. and (74.4+y) kg. while the standard deviation of weight is
(6.7+1/m) kg. If the mean weight of people of height (160+x) cm. is known to be (65.7+4y/5) kg. and the
standard deviation of their weight is (6.1+1/m) kg., what are the standard deviation of height and the
correlation coefficient of the two variables? 5
