Introductory Message
Welcome to General Physics 1

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Sagay City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The General Physics 1 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The General Physics 1 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue
learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner,
carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer
the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Pascal’s Principle

I. Learning Competency with Code

Apply Pascal’s principle in analyzing fluids in various systems.
(STEM_GP12FM-IIf-43)

II. Background Information for Learners

When you squeeze one end of a tube to get toothpaste out

the other end, you are watching Pascal’s principle in action.
This principle is also the basis for the Heimlich manoeuvre,
in which a sharp increasing pressure applied to the abdomen
is transmitted to the throat, forcefully ejecting food lodged
there.

III. Activity Proper

Directions: Read the selection below about Pascal’s principle and answer the
activity that follows.

You can recall that pressure is the amount of force exerted

per unit area. If we apply pressure in the water (fluid) inside
a syringe just like in Figure 1, the same amount of pressure
will be experienced by the syringe chamber where the water
touches. That same amount of pressure will cause the water
to displace at the tip. To increase the amount of displaced
water, you just need to apply a greater pressure on the
handle.

Figure 1: A pressure applied on the syringe will cause the water to come out of the syringe’s tip.

Pascal’s Principle – the pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted

undiminished to every portion of the fluid and the walls of the containing vessel.

In Figure 2, when pressure (p1) is applied on the input of the hydraulic system, the
same amount of the pressure (p2) is generated on the output end. At the input, a force
(F1) is applied on the small area (A1), thus generating pressure. Although pressure is
identical at all point inside the chamber where the fluid is found, the force (F2) produced
at the output will be amplified because of the wider area (A2) where the pressure is
applied. We can amplify a small amount of force using Pascal’s principle.

Figure 2: The hydraulic lift uses the pascal’s principle to lift heavy objects.
Example: In a hydraulic lift, a 30N force is pressed on an input piston with a 0.1m 2 area. If
the output piston has an area of 1.5m2, how much output force is created?

Solution:
30N F2 30N x 1.5m2
= ; F2 = = 450N
0.1 m2 1.5 m2 0.1 m2

ACTIVITY
Directions: Answer the problems below by applying what you have learned.

1. A car is being lifted in a hydraulic automobile lift as shown below.

A. What must be the ratio of the diameter of the vessel at the car to the diameter of
the vessel to the force F1 is applied so that a 1200kg car can be lifted with a force
F1 of just 120N?

B. The piston of the hydraulic automobile lift is 0.5m in diameter. What gauge
pressure, in Pascal, is required to lift a car with a mass of 1200kg?

C. What is this pressure in atmospheric pressure (atm)? Note: 1Pa = 9.87x10-6atm

2. If the area of Piston 1 is A1 = 0.028 m2, the area of Piston 2 is A2 = 0.55 m2 and the
external input force F1 = 420 N, what is the external output force F2?

3. The weight of the bus is 29,000 N and is lifted by Piston 2. What is the external input
force F1 in Piston 1 if A2 = 3800 cm2 and A1= 100 cm2?
