Learning Objectives

- explain about negative integers

- determine the place of negative integers on
number lines
- compare negative integers
- order negative Integers
What is negative
integers?
Negative Integers

Integers, what is it?

A set of numbers that include all the natural number (0, 1, 2, 3,
4, etc) and the negatives

Integers include positive number and negative number and

zero (zero is neither positive nor negative)
Base on the number line, what is negative
integers?
Negative integer:
A set of number less than zero (zero is neither positive nor negative)

A set of number go to the left of zero

A set of number with - sign
The opposite of positive integers
Negative integers

all number go to the left of zero, and the more to the left, the
smaller the value or the further from zero, the smaller
the value
Positive integers

all number go to the right of zero, and the more to the

right, the bigger the value or the further from zero,
the bigger the value
Write the number in the correct place

The arrow on the number

line represents the
number -3

The arrow on the number

line represents the number
5
Write the number in the correct place

-3, ,2, 6, 0, -1, -5

-8, 6, -5, 4 2, 10, -12

Write the number in the correct place
according the given scale
Scale 4

Scale -3
Comparing and Ordering Negative Integers

Numbers get smaller to the left and larger to right

Ordering Negative integers

-3, -5, -7, -9, -11

-3 is the greater value

-11 is the smaller value

-7 is the half way between -3 and -11

Ordering Negative integers

-4, -2, 0, 2, 4, 6

6 is the greater value

-1 is the smaller value

1 is the half way between -4 and 6

Comparing and Ordering Negative Integers

Comparing : (greater than, less than or equal)

Ex: -3 greater than -6 -3 . . . -6

-10 greater than - 90 -10 . . . -90

-7 less than -5 -7 . . . -5

-1 000 less than -2 -1 000 . . . -2

- 10 equal - 10 -10 . . . - 10
Compare the following by using greater than, smaller
than, or equal symbol

1. -4 . . . -8 4. -1 . . . -150
2. - 10 . . . -5
5. -72 . . .-21
3. -25 . . . . -1 000

Answer: Answer:

1. -4 greater than -8 4. -1 greater than -150

2. -10 less than -5 5. -72 less than -21
3. -25 greater than - 1 000
Comparing and Ordering Negative Integers

Ordering: ascending, descending

Ascending = ordering from smaller to larger
Descending = ordering from larger to smaller
Ex:
9 2 6 -3 -5 8 -6 1

Ascending: -6 -5 -3 1 2 6 8 9
Descending : 9 8 6 2 1 -3 -5 -6
Ordering the following number!

1. by ascending 1. by ascending

-16, -64, -42, -18, - 50 -64, -50, -42, -18, -16

2. by descending 2. by descending

-4, -23, -16, -67, -3 -3, -4, -16, -23, -67
