The Vietnamese have a strong family culture, as evidenced by how many multi-generational
households there are and how much importance they attach to family gatherings and reunions.
As a result, we spend quite a bit of time with our family members, both our immediate and
extended.
But curiously, among all the members in my family, the one that I've really bonded with in the
past few years is actually my father in law.
And there are a lot of reasons for this. For one, we just have a lot in common. For example: we
both like to travel, we both appreciate good booze, and we're both into clothes. We also share the
same views about a lot of things in life, like relationships, finances, career and so on. I still
remember when we first met - we clicked almost instantly. This is definitely not the case with
most families in Vietnam where there would be a huge generational gap between the parents and
the children. I know many of my friends who don't get along with their parents, or parents-in-law
for that matter, nearly as well as my father-in-law and I do, and for that I count myself very
fortunate.
In addition to being compatible, part of the reason why I like being around him so much is that
he's an exceptionally good listener. I felt like I can confide with him anything - my innermost
secrets, my demons, anything that I'm going through - and I would never feel judged. He always
gives me really sound advice.
And that's also another thing I really enjoy about spending time with my father-in-law. The man
is a fount of knowledge dồi dào tri thức. He is a self-made tự lập/ tự thân man; he's gone through a lot to get
to where he is today, so he has a lot of experience and wisdom to offer and often a willingness to
do so. I really enjoy picking his brain on the economy, the hospitality industry which is his area
of expertise, how to manage relationships, and stuff like that. All of the conversations that I've
had with him are extremely uplifting truyền cảm hứng and empowering, and I'm just thankful that I
could talk to him pretty much whenever I want.
