Speaking topic 1 : Family

- What type of family are you living in? (19/1/21)
- Family members
- Works
- Life
- Hopes and ambitions
2/ Is it typical of Vietnamese families?
3/ How has your family changed over the year?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Well, WHAT I would like to share with you today is about my family . I currently live with my
immediate family which has 6 people. First, let me introduce my parents, both of them (/whom) are
businessmen…... Although they get bogged down with work, they still take care of us so carefully.
Next, I want to talk about my sisterS, the first one is a teacher and she is married. The other is still
studying and she is going to study abroad. And I also have a younger brother. I used to fight with my
siblings when we were young , but now I get on with them really well because we’re adults. As you can
see, It's always NOISY (bustling and boisterous/hectic/lively) in my house so I have never felt lonely or
bored / gotten a sense of borring . My parent said that There were nothings more important than our
health and learning is the shortest way to success. That why they try so hard to provide us with good
condition as well as education. ( They hope we can dedicate to society ).

I can surely say that my family is quite typical. We are a nuclear family, which is very common in
Vietnam. Children still live with their parent but when they grow up and get married, they will move
out, just like my sister did. We are very close-knit family, I’m so lucky to have parents who care about
me, teach me good behavior, and siblings to confide in/rely on. Each family strives to build up
happiness in some way, and my family is no exception ( Every family strives to build
happiness, and my family is no exception /. When trouble comes …. ).

In the past, my older sister was still single and she still lived under the same roof with us but
now she is move out. She told me that when she was young, she wanted to fly away from
home. But now, she just want to stay close to family and so do I. My family is now even
bigger because we have more members who are inlaws. Time flies by, my parents are older
/(aging), and we are becoming more mature. Family plays an essential role in my life, helps me get
through ups and downs/ (thick and thin). We will always stand together, no matter what happens.

Frankly speaking, I have a close-knit relationship to all people in my family. So, if I had to pick one of
them, I would
We’re a close-knit family and
know that we can rely on each
other when one of us needs
help We’re a close-knit family and know that we can rely on each other when one of us needs
help
Do you like spending time with your family?
Wow absolutely yes. (Reason)I am the type of person who really cherish the moment of family
members having fun together in a close-knit family. (Example) AlthoughI have tons of tasks
tocomplete in my school/company, I always try to balance between work and family and spend quality
time with my family members as much as I can.

are too busy with their jobs, try to make ends meet, finally they forget what is really important. But for
me, I have realized how essential family are . When trouble comes, my family is always be there to
support me. Mealtime is my favorite time of the day, it isn’t just time to eat, it’s time for us to talk and
share our stories. Sometimes, we have an argument because of the generation gap, but it helps us
understand each other better. They are inspire, motivate me, especially they bring me happiness. In
the fast pace of modern life, I hope we can always stand together to enjoy happy moments.

Describe a person to whom you are very close in your family?

Wow, to talk about the person to whom I am closest in my family, I would like to mention my mother,
who plays a crucial role in my life. She is not just my mom, she is also my idol, my best friend and also
my consultant.(Reason) I adore her because she is such a kind-hearted, caring and loving person in the
family. (Example) As you know, I live in a nuclear family with four members, my parents, my little
brother and me; therefore, my mom will have more time to look after each member more carefully,
both in terms of physical health and emotions. Honestly, she is the one I can share everything
withoutany hesitation. Whenever I have any problems or sadness or happiness, mom is always the
first person that I talk to. She always cheers me up, gives me pieces of valuable advice and encourage
me to look on the bright side everytime I feel.
VOCUBULARY : Crucial role (n) Vai trò đặc biệt quan trọng Kind-hearted (a) Ấm áp (tính cách) Nuclear
family (n) Gia đình hạt nhân (bao gồm bố mẹ) Look on the bright side (v) : lạc quan
Responsible citizen (n) công dân có trách nhiệm / Determination (n) sự quyết tâm, kiên định /

Is family important in your country?

(Note: ‘Family’ can be both singular and plural, depending on the emphasis you want to show. As a
collective noun, we tend to say ‘family is important’, but if we want to emphasis the individuals in the
family, we say ‘family are important.)

Yes, they are our flesh

and blood!
Family is a priority!
Family is really crucial!
Family plays a pivotal
role in our lives
Yes, they are our flesh and blood máu và thịt! (Family is a priority!Family is really crucial!Family plays a
pivotal role in our lives)
Our family instills certain values in us!
Family bonds are important !
Family help you get through thick_and thin (difficult times)!
They can help you get through the ups_and downs!
Families today and families in the past!
[ For this type of question, you can use a 3 step approach - and show off

3 different tenses. It also helps you organise your ideas fluently ]

In what ways is family life different now to the past?/ In what ways have families in your country changed
in recent years? Over the past decades, families in Vietnam have transformed a great deal in terms of both size
and family roles. To be specific, extended families with many generations living together are not the trend anymore.
Meanwhile, nuclear families with only parents and children have become the pattern in the city as well as rural
areas. The reason for this change is to avoid conflicts and arguments caused by generation gaps. Besides, family
roles are not the same as they were in former days as both parents go to work. Therefore, the responsibilities to
make money, bring children up and do housework are shared between them.

 a great deal (idiom): rất nhiều

1. In the past, families were bigger!
2. But things have changed a lot!
3. Now, families tend to be smaller!

1. Previously families used to live under the same roof!

2. However, families have gone through changes!
3. Now, they tend to live apart

1. In past times, families were close knit units !

2. But things have changed somewhat !
3. Nowadays families are not as close as they used to be!
In terms of respect, they are different !
In terms of the age of marriage they are different !
In terms of family values there have been some changes !
As far as incomes are concerned, more and more women have
become breadwinners

Young people are less respectful of older people !

Demographics have changed!
We typically have smaller family units these days!
In days gone by, families used to bond more.!
I’d say families are less conservative compared to the past
Who is the family leader in your country? I believe it’s flexible at the moment. In the past, the
husband was normally the breadwinner and the wife was usually the homemaker of a family.
However, everything has changed and these days, women have increasingly been participating in the
labour market and bringing home the bacon. As a result, they now have a voice in their family as their
husbands do. That’s why both the husband and the wife can be the leader of a family. Before making a
decision, they have to discuss the issue together.

 breadwinner /ˈbredˌwɪn.ər/ (noun): người kiếm tiền trong gia đình, trụ cột gia đình
 homemaker /ˈhəʊmˌmeɪ.kər/ (noun): nội trợ
 bring home the bacon /ˈbeɪ.kən/ (idiom): kiếm tiền về nuôi gia đình

How do you think family life will change in the future? Apart from all flying cars, robot maids and the like, family
life probably will not be much different. There will still be children and parents. Our body secretes hormones that
cause us to want children and bond us to them. I would imagine there will be more same-sex parents or something
like group parenting, with 3 parents. Who knows what the future may hold? But families will be families, still.

 secrete something /sɪˈkriːt/ (verb): tiết ra

 who knows what the future may hold?: ai biết tương lai sẽ ra sao?
BAND &+
I am going to talk about my mother who has played an essential role in my life. She is my guardian, my
friend and my role model.
My mother is in her forties now, but she still maintains a youthful look. In terms of personality,
she is an extremely compassionate and kind-hearted person who always takes care of her children.
She really is a mother and a friend to me as she always gives me valuable advice and is willing to stand
by me through all the ups and downs of my life. Although sometimes she drives me crazy due to her
being a perfectionist, I still hold so much pride and respect for her.
I am also influenced by her strong-will. Ever since she was young, she had to learn to be independent
as my grandparents were very busy and constantly on the go. She had to take care of almost
everything: her younger brother, household chores and herself. Such challenges shaped her into the
strong person that she is now. Her determination, as well as her perseverance, are really something
for us to look up to. And I keep reminding myself every day to be as strong as my mother, a real-life
“wonder woman.”

Vocabulary highlights:
– an essential role – a necessary part
– guardian – someone who protects you
– role model – someone to admire or look up to
– maintains a youthful look – to keep looking young
– compassionate – to understand and care about someone
– kind-hearted – to be a kind or nice person to others
– to stand by someone – to support or help someone
– the ups and downs – the good and bad times
– drives me crazy – to repair and improve something eg. a building
– strong-will – to be determined, not give up easily
– independent – to look after or think for yourself or to not be controlled by others
– on the go – always doing something or going somewhere
– shaped her – changed her or made her that way
– determination – to not let anything stop you from doing what you have decided to do
– perseverance – to continue trying to achieve something
– a real-life “wonder woman” – someone who really helps you or saves you

Well, it’s really hard for me to choose one family member that I admire because, you
know, I love and admire them all equally. But if I had to choose one, it would have to be
my dad.
You know, my dad is a very hard-working person. He gets up pretty early, at about 5 and 5:30
every morning. He often has quick breakfast and then goes to the farm. He normally works 10 or
12 hours a day on the farm. You know, farming for a living is hard work, especially during
summer time, when the temperature can go up to nearly 40 degrees which is extremely hot.
Working outdoors in this condition is a nightmare. Although my dad has to work super hard to
support the family, I’ve never heard him complain about hard work or things like that. That’s
the first reason why I really admire him.
And the second thing that I want to talk about is that my dad is a very dedicated husband and
father. He always puts his family first. I feel like he’s willing to do everything to make his
wife and children smile. Although he has to work super hard during the day, he always makes
time for me and my brothers and sisters.
I’ve learned a great deal from my dad. You know, being a farmer’s daughter, I understand the
value of hard work. My dad is always a good role model for me. Actually, there are so many
things that I could talk about, but I know that I don’t have enough time for it. So if I had to
choose one family member that I admire the most, I would talk about my dad.
Frankly speaking, I have a close-knit relationship to all people in my family. So, if I had to pick one of
them, I would talk about my father.
He is a man of few words. Opposite to my mother who likes gossiping any time she can,
my father just talks much on family gatherings. But it doesn’t mean he’s a boring man.
Sometimes we kill ourselves laughing when he tell jokes, especially with a serious face.
Besides, he’s also a hardworking man who has led a life of hardship. As for this point, my
mother is also dedicated to her job.
The most common activity that I and my father do together is talking and sharing. I like
listening to him talk about the time during the Vietnam War, about his rough
upbringing, et cetera. Sometimes he also guides me to do some craftworks such as a
bamboo hammock or a clay cup. He’s a craftsman.
Our hobbies are not the same, so I think the only reason that we get on well with each
other is sharing. Whenever I’m down, he raises me up. When I’m in trouble, he pulls me
out. He never puts any pressure on me and always encourages me to lead a life that I
want. For example, when I was about to make a decision on my major, he told me not to
choose a major because of its job opportunity but to choose which I like. Thanks to him,
now I’m doctor and I love my job.
Close-knit: khắn khít
A man of few words: người đàn ông kiệm lời, ít nói
Gossip: nhiều chuyện
Family gathering: họp mặt gia đình
Kill oneself laughing: cười rất nhiều
Lead a life of hardship: sống một cuộc đời vất vả

un in the family – a common

feature in a family; something
which is passed from parents to
children
- Artistic ability seems to run in
the family
It's a blessing to be in a good upbringing, have parents who care about me and teach me good
behavior - It is a privilege for me to have received a good education, to have been cared for
by parents who taught me the right way to behave.

My father/mother/older sister/brother/cousin… is a very considerate and thoughtful person. When I

was small, he/she usually took good care of me; taught me good lessons and never let me out of his/
her sight. Even now, whenever I have a bad day, he/she has always been there for me, and helps me
get through it. As I have got older, my father/mother/older sister/brother/cousin… has become my
best friend. I can share my interests, my career plans or even things about my love life with them – in
fact, anything at all. Especially when I am down, he/she gives me the encouragement that I need to
move on. To me, he/she is a role model whom I always look up to/admire/and follow in his/her foot-
steps.

SPEAKING TOPIC 2 :
Talk about your favorite day of the week
- What is it?
- Why do you like it?
- What do you do on that day?
- How do you often spend your time every day?
- Do you prefer to spend time with your friends or family?

Well, WHAT I would like to share with you today is about my favourite day of the week. It’s not always
exactly a same day because it’s depends on my timetable which changes every term.
My favorite day has never always been the same due to my changing schedule every term
During my last term, Sunday was my favorite day, but now it's Saturday. I used to like/prefer Sundays
because I don’t have any lesson on that day, but I still need to finished my assignment.
Now, in this term, I have new timetable I don't have any classes on Saturday, and I can leave my
homework till Sunday. That’s the reason why my preference has changed.
On this day, I have a lot of free time, I can get away from the study pressure and enjoy some me-
time. On weekdays I usually get up at 7:30, but on the weekend I always sleep in until 10 or 11 am and
then eat my bruch. For me, eating and sleeping are the two most helpfull ways to relieve my stress.
Once in a while, I go online to search for some new recipes to cook. I love food and enjoy cooking but
to be honest, I don’t have a knack for cooking, that is the irony, you know, I’m little clumsy /ˈklʌm.zi/.
Other than that, I also watch some series on netflix, which is relaxing.
Normally, I spend one-fourth of the day to study, and another one is on sleeping, help my mother in
household chore (do housework) and a lot of things that I can’t mention here. If I’m not busy with my
work, I’ll check out if there have any movies that attract me. But if I have lots of things on my hand, I’ll
probably focus on my work.
Because the Covid-19 pandamic is still happenning, so I think it’s important to stay close to my family.
I cannot meet my friends in person, but I can still see them online, so this will not affect our friendship.
(And of course it’s not tough to choose between friend and family) , for me family is a priority.I feel
happiest when I can spend time with my family, I can learn many things from them. They teach me
how to behave in a good manner, share experience, and so on.

On the top of that, Mealtime is my favourite time of the day,you know….

Speaking topic 3

Talk about your dream job

- What job would you like to do?
- Why do you like it ?
- What exactly do you have to do in this job ?
- What do you need to do the job well?
- What problems may you have doing the job?
- What are u doing to prepare for it in the future?
ANSWER :
Well, WHAT I would like to share with you today is about my dream job. Among many types of job in
labour market, (such as job from offices, factories, companies), teaching is the one I have dreamt to
do. I want to be a teacher, specializing in teaching English. I Even pretended to be a teacher in
childhood.
I suppose teacher is one of the most noble jobs in Vietnamese society and a decent educational
system will create a strong workforce for the country. That’s the reason why I want to be a teacher.
On the top of that, I can work with students who are very young and enomously enthusiastic. ( I like
children because Ithey are so cute and funny so I think I’d like to teach in primary school ) The
another reason for this interest is working with under-age people would make me some-how younger
in mind
To become a teacher, I have to help students broaden their horizons, teach them how to behave in a
good manner, especially give them the necessary study skills to be able to understand and use English.
Due to competiveness of the labour market, I do believe that it is not easy to take this job. Although it
is not considered a well-paid job, it still can provide me a fortune if I work hard enough with
dedication. If I want to do the job well, I’ll need to have a really good knowleged of English. And I
suppose Teachers must be able to express themselves well to their students. On top of that, this job
requires us to have great passion and patience.

The difficulty I may encounter in my job is that I find it difficult to express my ideas professionally and
clearly. This hinders me so much in speaking test too and i also not good at memorising things so it
hard for me to learn grammar…. I know that I need to gain more experience and a lot of time to
impvove this.
I currently a student at university, so I have to enrich my knowledge and sharpen my skills,… and
learn as much as I can. I think ….. I will make a to-do list to manage time well, and I will find someone
who can hold me accountable, a friend, for example.
That’s all I want to share, thank you for listening

What qualities should a good teacher have?

Firstly, I think a teacher needs to be patient. Secondly, I think the teacher must be kind and
encouraging, which creates a warm, open learning environment. I also think they should have
interpersonal skills to be able to understand the needs of all different students.

Should students have a part time job while studying at university ?

From my point of view, students should take a part-time job. First of all, working part-time helps
students earn more money to cover everyday needs. They won't have to depend on their family.
This is very good, especially for students have difficult circumstances. Secondly, working part-time
is useful for students' study. It assists them to widen their knowledge and have good
communications skills. For example, students who are studying English should take a part-time job
in some famous places where have many foreigners. Therefore, they can practice English by being
a tour guide. Finally, working part-time helps students have a good preparation for their future.
However, I can't deny that taking a part-time job also has many bad Downloaded by effects such
as studying becomes worse or being tired of working too much... In conclusion, I think students
should take a part-time job but not too much
Ex : Describe your idea of an ideal job
You should say:
- What the job is
- Why you would like to do this job
- Whether it would be easy to do this job
And say whether it would be easy to find a job like this.

Among many types of job in labour market ( thị trường lao động), teaching is the one I have
dreamt to do. Although it is considered a dead-end job, it still can provide me a fortune
if I work hard enough with dedication. Not to mention the, the flexitime that teachers get,
by which I mean if someday the teacher picks up an illness, he/she can have a day-off
and then gives students a makeup later. What I fancy most in this job is that I can work
with students who are very young and enomously enthusiastic, well , sometimes ex-
tremely rebellous, though. The reason for this interest is working with under-age people
would make me somehow younger in mind..
However, I do believe that it is not a piece of cake to take this job due to competiveness
of the labour market. What’s more, if I want to be a teacher at a school or uiniversity, I
have to sit the civil service exam which is completely difficult. Additionally, nepotism is
very popular in this field. I mean lots of people get job as a teacher by their money and
relationships. Well, anyway, against all odds, I am trying my best to make my dream come
true

When do you plan to start that? To be completely honest with you, I guess I will enroll the course
next month. Frankly speaking, I am a procrastinator, and I often do something spontaneously. So, I
hope that I will stay the course.
How do you intend to achieve that? I would say that there a couple of things that I need to achieve
the plan. I will have a to-do list to manage time well/properly, then I will find someone who can
hold me accountable ( It means that you make sure they do what they promise they will do. ), a
friend, for example.
# to hold sbdy accountable for + noun/gerund Meaning: to consider someone responsible for
something; to blame something on someone ( bắt ai chịu trách nhiệm cho cái gì )
Example: Companies which discharge chemical waste from their factories into the sea or into
rivers must be held accountable for their actions and be fined heavily.
- to enrich my knowledge and sharpen my skills

1. Learn [s.th] for your life: (native): Học cái gì đó rất quan trọng với bạn
2. Procrastinator: Đứa siêu lầy/Người lúc nào cũng trì hoãn
3. Do something spontaneously: (native): Cứ hứng lên là làm chứ không có chủ định lâu dài
4. Stay the course: Kiên trì cho đến hết khóa học
5. Hold [s.o] accountable: (collocation): Canh chừng, nhắc nhở, quản thúc
6. Couldn’t sleep a wink: (idiom): Không thể ngủ được

SPEAKING TOPIC 4
Talk about the most memorable day/event in your life
https://soundcloud.com/b-o-nguy-n-51/a-sample-for-ielts-speaking-part-2-a-happy-family-event-in-
your-childhood
Well, my family have quite a lot of good time together, but I still recall this want memory, which still make me smile whenever I thinking
about it. It happended quite a long time ago, when I was little, we were on a holiday trip to Kappa island, you know, a very well-known
castaway destination in my hometown ( well, I’ve never been to any places other than my hometown so I have to say it was kind of
exhilarating ( /ig'ziləreitiη/ (a) làm phấn chấn, hồ hởi ) experience for me. My parents‘d got everythings prepared very carefully at the
night before we set off. Of course I give them a hand and couldn’t wait to see the island for the first time. We left home very early to catch a
ferrry, it was during the holiday so the ferry was pack with people, but that didn’t concern me at all. And finaly there were we. The island
was much more beautiful than I had imagined, being an experienced traveller my father’s shoulders round the island before we finally picked
a small cosy (a): ấm cúng, thoải mái) hotel to stay in. We were there for two days and all of us were indulging /in'dʌldʒ/ (v) nuông chiều, cho

And treated ourselves to ( treat someone/oneself to st : to provide and pay for something for someone as a gift or as entertainment ) a

Perhaps the reason why this memory is still so vivid in my mind is that we had so much fun. That I found like we were really letting off
steam/ blow off steam ( to do or say something that helps you to get rid of strong feelings or energy. Vd : She jogs after work to let off

and that trip was really available chance to slow down and enjoy life more. I was never talk to my parent so much about so many things
under that night. And that to me is somethings very meaningful.

Describe a happy family event from your childhood. You should say: what the event was. where it
happened
A happy family event that I still remember clearly from my childhood was making chung cake for Tet
holiday at my grandparents’ house.
what you saw and did: When I was small, our family would get together to make chung cake for Tet
holiday. My grandparents had six children; therefore, I had many cousins. And the great thing was that
my cousins and I were around the same age. At that time, we were too small to do anything, so
basically, we played with each other while we watched the adults prepare the ingredients for the cake.
Sometimes, we got to eat the leftover food after all the cakes were finished. Tet holiday was the only
time of the year that we were allowed to stay up late, one reason why it is so memorable. Although
the winter was cold, we all felt cozy inside; we had so much fun together.
And explain why you remember this event so well: Since my grandfather passed away a couple of
years ago, we stopped our family tradition. In addition, some of my cousins had already gotten
married and had their own families, and some had gone to study abroad. Consequently, it was very
difficult for us to get together like old times. Missing this special family tradition makes it so
unforgettable for me and I hope we can start doing it again in the future

Okay, so now I would like to talk about the Tet holiday in Vietnam. It is a very important holiday for all
Vietnamese people. It often takes place from the end of January / ˈ ʒd æn.ju.er.i/ till the end of
February ˈ ː feb.ru .er.i/. People use the Lunar Calendar to count the dates. It is also spring time. So the
weather is very suitable for this festival. It takes place to welcome the New Lunar Year. Another reason
is because people have worked hard for the whole year and they need a break. Moreover, we also
need to spend time with our family and Tet holiday is a good occasion.

Talk about the most important decision you’re made in your life
- What did you make it?
- How did you make it?
- Who or what helped you make the decision ?
- Why was it important?
- How it did effect your life ?
ANSWER: Well, WHAT I would like to share with you today is about my most important
decision, which I made last year ( 2021) .When I was still in high school, studying at grade 12,
at that time, I had to choose a major that I wanted to pursue.  /pəˈsjuː/

I vividly remember that time and how confused I was because I had no idea about what I
should select. I found it hard to make up my mind due to several choices. I always had set my
heart on choosing so I couldn’t sleep on a wink for a long time to take everything into
consideration carefully. This is a momentous decision, because deciding my major is also
deciding my future career, which will shape my entire life.
At first,I considered taking major in business because nearly everyone wantS to be rich so
they think that majoring in business would help them achieve their goal and I’m no exeption.
I’m not always good at making decisions. I worry about making the wrong choices and often
seek advice from my parent. They did not force /fɔːs/ me to do anything; instead, they told me
to do what I thought was best for me. Eventually, (You know) the decision I reached was to
take English major, the reason being that I thought this would open more doors to me in the
future

Now, I’ll answer the last question “How it did effect my life”. Making decisions by myself has
always been the most difficult part about growing up. Well, to be honest sometimes the
journey /ˈdʒɜː.ni/ I choose is smooth, sometimes it is really stressful. However,it is what makes
me the person I am. I think it was definitely the right choice for me. I found studying this major
is fascinating. I am grateful to my parents for letting me decide what I want to do, so I now feel
more independent, as well as having my own opinion.

Undeniably, taking decisions is an integral part of everybody’s routine life. Right from minor to
major, there are plenty of decisions we take during our lifetime. Here, I would like to highlight
a decision that didn’t come easy to me, but I still had to take it. And, it was choosing a major…

It was when I prepared the application form for the university entrance exam that I had to
make an important but difficult decision. At that time, I was at a crossroads, where I had to
decide which university to apply for. Actually, my interest was in economics, which was taught
in two separate universities, one of which specialized in international trade while the other
focused more on the national economy. Fortunately, my sister, who graduated from an
economics college, gave me some sound advice. Having weighed up the pros and cons of each
school, she encouraged me to choose the university specializing in international trade. Finally,
I applied for this school after thinking carefully about all the options. At present, I feel
so satisfied with the learning environment of this university that I am always thankful for my
decision as well as my sister’s advice. Without her guidance, I probably wouldn’t be as content
with my university life as I am.

Question relate to :
What’s the most important factor in decision-making?

I think you need to weigh both sides of the issue, and seek input if possible, but beyond that there’s not much
else you can do. You should make a decision sooner rather than later, because leaving a decision unmade can
become stressful and frustrating.
Should parents make decisions for their children?

Until they’re a certain age, then yes. But I think kids need to experience making their own decisions and having
some autonomy – it’s a good thing. So parents should start handing over a little independence to their students
sooner rather than later.

What can people learn from wrong decisions?

Making the wrong decisions can be incredibly instructive. I think that failure is a very good thing for most people.
Understanding defeats and setbacks is great for people, since it teaches them resilience.

Do you like to make quick decisions?

If I can, then yes. I think having made a decision is better than floundering and being unsure. You may be worried
that you’re making the wrong decision, but I think that’s a natural part of life.

Do you think adults always make better decisions than children?

Usually they do, but that’s because they have more experience to draw upon /əˈpɒn/. But I think adults usually
tend to be more fearful and cautious than children, which can lead to them having less excitement.

Draw on/upon : Sử dụng kiến thức, kĩ năng, thông tin cho một mục đích cụ thể, to start using a supply of
something

Do you find making decisions easy?

SAMPLE ANSWER ONE (Simple) – “I think it depends. If it’s a small decision – one that’s not really important –
then I can make it easily. On the other hand, a big decision, like what job to do, is much harder and I will find it
difficult and i will take me a long time to make a choice.”

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO (Advanced) – “Actually, I think I’m quite an indecisive (/ɪn.dɪˈsaɪ.sɪv/ (a) do dự k quyết
đoan) person, so it’s difficult for me to make decisions. I often think too much about the outcomes and end up
hesitating. Often I write a list of pros and cons to help me decide and give me confidence that I’m on the right
track.”

Why do some people find it hard to make decisions?

Making decisions for some people becomes hard also probably because they are just not good enough in
gathering all the necessary data and information to make an final decision.

Do you think decision-making is a skill that should be developed?

SAMPLE ANSWER ONE (Simple) – “Yes, I agree. In life, we have to make many decisions, such as what job to do,
when to get married, and so on. These can have a big effect on our life, so it is important that we can make good
choices so we can live a happy life.”
SAMPLE ANSWER TWO (Advanced) – “Absolutely. I think it is one of the most essential skills a person needs to be
successful. The decisions that we make can have massive effects on our lives and the lives of people around us.
Often we have to make choices under pressure or there are many different factors we have to take into account
when we’re making a decision, so being able to reach good decisions is definitely beneficial.”

What kind of decisions do teenagers face nowadays?

SAMPLE ANSWER ONE (Simple) – “Well, I guess the main decision they have to make is what they will do after
high school. Many teenagers don’t have a plan or know what they want to do, so it is a big decision that can be
scary.”

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO (Advanced) – “I think teenager are under a lot of pressure from their family and their
peers /piə[r]/ and they have a lot of short-term and long-term decisions they have to make. Teenagers have to
decide what career they want to follow and this decision may be strongly influenced by their parents. / On a day-
to-day basis, they have to choose what clothes they will wear and how they will act while worrying about what
their friends and classmates will think of them, which can be difficult at time when they’re still learning who they
are as a person.”

What are some of the most important decisions young people have to make?

Answer: Young people are not “exempted” from making important decisions just because they are called
“young”. In fact, they also have to make some important decisions in their lives such what kind of career path to
choose; what kinds of subjects to study at universities, or when to get married and start a family. Finally, what
kind of “financial” habit and “health” habit to practice is also a very important decision, along with the decisions
above I just mentioned, for young people to make if they want to live happy and healthy for the rest of their
lives.

Do parents in your country allow their children to make important decisions about the future?

Yeah, as far as can see, children in Ireland are given quite a lot of autonomy..sometimes too much! I suppose
parents want to encourage their children to be independent and to learn about responsibility from an early age
but I often feel that children need more guidance and shouldn’t be expected to make life-changing decisions
when they are very young.

A good example of this is choosing subjects in secondary school. When kids are about 12 years old, schools and
parents expect them to decide what subjects they would like to focus on. In my opinion, 12 years old is too
young to make a decision like that. Students should be allowed to test all subjects until they are at least 15 or 16.

Do you agree that parents should make important decisions for their children?

Answer: Parents should make important decisions, in consent with the inputs and opinion of the children, for
their children until they reach their “adulthood”. But once they are grown up and ready to leave the “nest”,
parents should leave their children alone to make important decisions on their own. If the parents don’t allow
their children to make important decisions, they will probably never learn how to take “risks’ in life and live on
their own. In fact, parents should always encourage their children to make decisions even if their children are
reluctant to do so. After all, parents will never be around them forever to help their children out during crucial
times.

Do you think decision making today is different from decision making in the past?

Well obviously, there are a variety of possible differences here. I’d say that we have more options these days.
And, you know a modern lifestyle brings people more convenience. We can look up on the internet to know
more about a choice that we’ll choose. For instance, choosing a university.

(Actually I recently read an article related to this. Basically, the writer argued that nowadays, we have too much
choice which causes people to be unhappy. In the past people had fewer choices but were happier. I think this is
called the 'paradox of choice’)

How do you think computers help people make decisions?

That’s a good question…I suppose they can help us to make more logical decisions. What I mean is people are
often influenced by their feelings and sometimes emotion can hinder one’s ability to make decisions. I used to
work in finance and in that industry, computers are often used to help decision making. In fact, nowadays, there
are algorithms that automatically buy or sell stocks in order to make a profit. Machines certainly have an
advantage in this type of situation as they can calculate quickly and make logical choices based on probability.
That said, in other careers like teaching, computers aren’t as useful as emotions must be taken into account..

How important is it to get advice from other people when making decisions? It is very important, in my
opinion, to receive advice from other people always, when making decisions, primarily because it would help
one become familiar with an array of ideas and possibilities with regards to the kinds of outcomes he/she would
need to expect. Besides, when we are opened to receiving advice from others, the chances are that we would be
able to learn about the outcomes when somebody took the same kind of decisions in the past. Finally, we should
be opened to receive advice from others, when making decisions, even if they don’t serve our purposes in the
present since there is always a chance that they would benefit us in the future.

Why is it sometimes difficult to accept advice?

It is difficult to accept advice sometimes for some people mainly because of an inherent human characteristic
called “ego”. It is because of this “ego”, we sometimes fail to see the “truth” just as we fail to accept advice. In
other words, we feel that we know “better” than others and that accepting advice from other people will
“belittle” us in front of them. Of course, it also has something to do with the “reliability and trustworthiness” of
the persons who are offering advice.

Whether a piece of advice will be accepted or not depend largely also on the “location” where the advice is
being offered. For example, if we want to advise a person on not do something while he is terribly busy with his
works at his office, the chances are that he won’t pay any attention to that advice.

Is it better to make a decision thinking about what you want or thinking about what other people want?

Answer: Yes, it is always better to make a decision thinking what I really want instead of worrying about what
others really want primarily because it will be me who will have to live with whatever decision I make for the rest
of my life one way or another. Of course, it never harms to consult with the people, we love or care for, and ask
them what they also want, from time to time in order to bring them on board with my decision, but the decision
will always be mine based on what I really want.

One thing, which is worth mentioning here, is that one doesn’t worry what others want, not because he/she has
total disregards for others, but because it would be easier for the decision-maker to achieve his/her goal rather
easily since he/she is so intimately involved with the decision made.
Should events be prepared in advance?

If you want to organise a big, successful event then yes, preparation is necessary. But if it’s just a small event, like
a birthday party or some private anniversary then just play it by ear I guess.

Talk about : “ money is the most important factor leading to happiness”.

Ex1 : People have different views about whether money is the most important factor leading
to happiness. In my opinion, I think that money is one of the most important factor leading to
happiness, but it is not the most important factor. On the one hand, money is important for
people to achieve happiness . if people have lots of money , they will easily make daily
purchases such as supporting themselves or rasing their lives, they may not live happily
without having much money. Addition , when they have much money , they can do anything
they want such as traveling to other countries, eating different kinds of local cuisines.
Otherwise, they will have to work hard for life and may not have happiness. On the other
hand, there are other elements that contribute to individuals’happiness. I think family, friends
and other relationships are much more important than being wealthy and able to spend
money without any consideration. Money is just temporary factor, many other factors are
much more important. So while I agree that people have to earn money to meet their basic
needs before they can live happily, I believe that other non- financial factors can also
contribute to their well-being.
Ex 2 : Happiness depends on how you define happiness. In my opinion, I think that money
doesn't buy happiness, but money can buy a lot of things that contribute importantly to
happiness. First of all, one of the things that make people happy is family and friends. The
emotion they give me is priceless. On the other hand, sharing my things that are emotions,
money, relationships, opinions and so on with others who I love is my happiness. I love them
and want to take care of them carefully. I'm happy when they are happy. These relationships
are priceless. Second of all, this is a meaningful work. A job with a high salary isn't always what
makes people happy. Generally, everyone have a dream job, and they pursue it. They find
meaning in their job. Third of all is freedom, it's impossible to have truly happy when I don't
have even a small ounce of freedom in my life. Personal freedom is very importance. Money
can't buy freedom. Finally, happiness come from my success. When I do anything, I always
have a purpose. Therefore, I'm happy when I achieve my aims. Money is a tool of the life. It
can help me to be successful but I can't buy my success. In conclusion, happiness can't be
bought by money. It doesn't in the past or in the future. It only exists within our state of life
right now, here in the present, as we face the challenges of their daily life to protect and
achieve things that we love.

Three most important factors contributing to success.

Successful is the goal that all of us want to be, right! And I know that success brings a lot of
benefits, especially, it brings happiness to us. There are many different opinions about the
most factors leading to success, too. It seems to me that 3 crucial factors contributing to
success is willing to learn, courage, and openness. First, I will mention about the first factor :
willing to learn. Staying at the same level of knowledge means that others will pass at some
point. If we are lacking skills, we can certainly acquire by learning. We should prepare to
continue learning and accept advice and information from others. The second factor is
courage. On the path to success, we often have to make decisions that are difficult because
they find little favour in our enviroment or because they are connected with financial risk. If
we are courageous, we will able to make these decisions against all obstacies. The final
important factor is openness. There are a lot of change, especially in this day and age. If we
are not open to change, we will at some point not be able to participate actively, regardless of
how intelligent we are. Being open to new things and new challenges, on the other hand,
make it possible to react quickly to change and some cases to be able to use it to our
advantage. That are three main and the most important factors leading to success. I think that
I will apply them step by step to become successful.

Speaking topic 5 : Rules and regulations

Talk about a rule you find the most useful and a rule you find the most annoying
- What are/were the rules?
- Where are/werre they applied?
- How do/did you react to them?
- Do you think rules and regulations are necessary in life?
- What are your rules for life?

Answer :
First, I would like to tell you about a rule I find most useful, it’s one of the trafic rules. You know,
answering phone calls or texting while driving or riding motorbikes is a common sight in Vietnam
therefore the government has decided to impose restriction. Under this regulation, Motorcyclists who
use mobile phones or audio devices, except hearing aids ( a small device that people who cannot hear well wear inside
or next to the ear to make sounds louder, help them to hear better) have to pay a fine of VND 600,000 to VND 1 million
( six hundred thousand to one million Vietnamese dong) . For car drivers, using mobile phones while
driving have to face hefty punishments of 1-2 million VND. ( They also have their driving li-censes revoked for 3
months. If a violator causes a fatal accident, they will face criminal charges) .
I think is the most useful because I
was caught once and had to pay a fine, after that I have never done it again . ( It happened 2 months
ago, when I’m on way home. At first, I pleaded with a police to let me go < to plead with sb : cầu xin ai việc gì > Ultimately, I had to pay a
fine, but it was only 200.000 dong because that was all I had/I just had that amout in my pocket ).
( t is a driver's responsibility to be completely aware of their surroundings, including visual and audio. A really good driver uses all their senses to anticipate problems However, the hands-free device and phone must not be
held in the hand or touched physically while driving. Fully-licensed car drivers may use a phone to make or receive a phone call, to use its audio functions or perform GPS navigation if it is fixed to a holder and not touched. (Tuy

Rules and regulations are of utmost importance. They are definitely necessary to create a society with
harmonious relationships safety and function well. Without rules and regulations, society becomes
undisciplined (a) /ʌn'disiplind/ indiscipline /in'disiplin/(n: sự vô kỉ luật) and chaotic /kei'ɒtik/ (a) lộn xộn
Well, But to be completely honest there’s one rule I find really annoying is students cannot carry or
use mobile phones during classess. The reason why we have this rule because education authorities
opine /ou'pain/ ( cho rằng/ phát biểu/ chủ trương là) that mobile phones are a distraction for the students.
This’s true, but it is just one side, they seem to forget other benefits. During class, phone helps to
capture valuable/important information by clicking/taking pictures. Students can use their
smartphone to get the answer they’re looking for. For instance, if you want to look up information,
Smartphones provide the ability to get answers really fast. I have to follow the rule from school even
though I dislike it. (Sometimes I sneak to use my phone, But unfortunately, I’ve always been caught red-handed every time I’ve broken
the rule.)

My rule for life is always have a positive mindset. It’s a helpful way to live happy and to have more
benefits mentally and physically. I may have increased longevity, reduced risk of symptoms from
depression, less stress and anxiety /æη'zaiəti/. Positive thoughts bring me positive results .( It gives me
more courage to want to continue to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals). It can also impact others around me,
my positivity / pɒz.əˈtɪv.ə.ti/ can become contagious [ / kənˈteɪ.dʒəs/ (a) truyền nhiễm, lây].  make
they feel the same and then we can have a productive day.

How can you start training your brain to focus on the brighter side of life—and start reaping some of
these benefits? Like any new habit, it need to takes time and practice. As a student, it can be hard to
keep a positive outlook, especially when I’m studying for exams and thinking about my grade point
average or GPA. But, Learning is the best ways to stay positive through it all can help keep you on the
track for success. I’m able to discharge all the negative feelings by sharing my stories, making jokes.
1.Don’t be so hard on yourself. Brush it off (từ chối, không nghe hay phớt lờ đi) and try to find ways to do
better next time, don’t get discourage ( nản lòng). When you think positively, you’re more motivated to
find different ways. 2.It’s impossible to know everything so It’s OK to ask for help. 3. Avoid unnecessary
conflicts by openly communicating and accepting and respecting the opinions of others. Welcoming open
discussions in a positive/non-judgmental way is a great way to keep the peace.

4.Don’t let your grades define you—Most students would agree that their grades are a direct
reflection of who they are―which couldn’t be further from the truth. Every student, at one time or
another, has received a grade they’re not happy with. But it doesn’t mean you give up. Staying positive
can help improve your focus by not dwelling on negative or discouraging thoughts. Instead, it helps
you to keep your eye on your goals and reminds you why you’re in college in the first place – to keep
learning and growing.

5.Manage your time wisely —Time. Once it’s gone, you can’t get it back, so it’s important to make the
best of every minute. Of course, your studies are a priority but it’s also important to learn to balance
your social and class schedules to succeed. Plan study schedules to keep yourself organized, but be
sure to make time for yourself. Taking a mental health break can be the most important one of all.
Plan for some “me” time.

6.Be patient—It may not be easy at times, but it’s important to be patient with yourself and others.
Although your friends and classmates are all at the same college, everyone is in a different place
(emotionally, academically, or just in general) so it’s important to be mindful and respectful of where
others are in their own lives.

When it comes down to it, the power of positive thinking is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.
So, take a deep breath and remember positive thoughts reap positive results. You’ve got this.

What it is?
 Every school/college/office works with rules and regulations, such as reaching in time, performing tasks as per the
deadline and many more.
 My school has framed stringent rules and regulations for wearing the uniform.
 The students need to wear rust-brown trousers and an off-break shirt on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
 But on Wednesdays and Saturdays, we have to carry a monochromatic look by wearing a white uniform.

Why you don’t like it?

 According to the opinion of a large number of students, this rule is harsh.

 I staunchly believe that we should follow the footsteps of developed nations, and the school administration should
permit the students to wear the clothes of their choice.
 The students can show their creativity and style by wearing divergent clothes.

How do others feel about the rule? and whether you’ve followed the rule?

PART 3 : follow up questions
Rules are the most important aspects of an educational institute and there is no denial about that.
Without rules and regulations, an institute or organization becomes indisciplinedand chaotic.

Are there laws about environmental protection in Vietnam?

Without a doubt, there are a considerable number of laws, regulations and guidelines on environmental conser-
vation in Vietnam but I’m afraid the enforcement of these laws isn’t strong enough. Added to this, lenient pun-
ishments may also explain why littering, Illegal dumping of hazardous waste, poor sustainability practices as well
as wildlife trafficking are still relatively common.

What kinds of rules are there in Vietnamese schools?

I’d say that basically there are two kinds of rules implemented in educational institutions around Vietnam. The
first one is codes of conduct or codes of ethics that govern behaviours of students, educators and even students’
parents at school. This set of rules is critical because without them, misconducts such as cheating on exams, dis-
respectful behaviours, classroom disruptions and child abuse would be prevalent. Another common type of reg-
ulations in schools is the dress code which clearly states what kinds of uniform or outfits students and teachers
should wear.

What can teachers do to make students obey the rules?

Well, this isn’t something I’ve ever considered but I suppose the best method is teaching by example. It’s cru-
cial for teachers to fulfill all their duties as well as the promises they’ve made to their students. This way, chil-
dren will respect them and voluntarily follow their lead. Additionally, educators should strive to nurture an in-
spiring learning environment by incorporating humour and fun into their instructions and guidance. This could
make students more willing to comply with rules and regulations.

What should parents do to educate children about laws?

Well, as I mentioned the most effective way is for adults to set a good example themselves. If parents violate or
disrespect the law, their child might follow the same path. Moreover, it’s critical to set clear rules and limits
to discipline children from a very young age. If they are properly taught to differentiate between right and
wrong and be aware of their rights and responsibilities, they will become dutiful citizens later.

How important is it that all students follow the rules at school? Why?

It’s important that students learn to obey rules at school, because it’s just part of life. When you grow up and be-
come an adult there are many more rules you have to follow, such as when you’re driving, working, and many
other aspects pf life which are governed by rules.
Learning to respect rules, and authority, even if you don’t fully understand why, or agree with the rules, is an es-
sential part of becoming a productive member of society, and so it is something that children should be expected
to learn from the first day they enter into the education system – because rules will be part of their live every
day for the rest of their lives.

Do you think that people in your country obey the law all the time?
No, certainly not. Many crimes are reported on newspapers and television. They appear very frequently. In fact, I
see them every week. Traffic violations, sexual harassment and school violence have been on the news recently.

1. Why do schools make rules?

Schools make the rule to make the children study with determination, dedication and discipline. There is no
denying this conviction that organised individuals can lead his life towards an impressive growth trajectory.

On the other hand, unorganised people can ruin their careers, by not doing things correctly. Rules help us to take
control of ourselves. And it is significant to form good habits in the budding years. Due to this reason, schools lay
excessive focus on rules.

2. What’s the importance of obeying the law?

Law helps the government and the citizens to maintain decorum in the country. When the citizens do not obey
the law, the country goes into chaos. Somalia is the prime example, most citizens over there do not follow the
law, due to this, the country is going through a severe financial crunch.

The countries where people follow the rules, grow substantially. For example, in Japan, a large section of society
follows the law, due to this reason, the growth rate is high.

3. What can parents and teachers do to help children follow rules?

The first and foremost step the parents and teachers take to help children follow rules is to make them aware of
the significance of obeying rules.

They must make them know that all famous persons in this world, are those who have led their lives towards the
right trajectory by obeying rules.

4. Is it a good thing to break rules sometimes?

Although it is imprudent to break laws, in case of emergency, one can do so. For example, an ambulance can
cross the red signal if the patient inside requires immediate medical attention.

5. Why do some people say that rules are made to be broken?

A few people say so because they find pleasure in breaking rules due to their callous attitude towards life. They
are lethargic and do not understand the significance of rules and regulations.

6. Do you think children should follow all kinds of rules?

Yes, children need to follow all kinds of rules. It is a good habit to acquire because it can lead your life towards an
impressive growth trajectory.

7. Do you think children must wear school uniforms?

Yes, it is significant for children to wear uniforms because of many reasons. Firstly, they become disciplined. Be-
cause wearing the same uniform every day instil a sense of discipline inside them.

Secondly, it creates equality. Because when students from all the sections of society wear the same uniform,
they understand each other in a better way.

Thirdly, students remain more focused on study. They do not spend much time selecting the dress they should
wear for school. And their central focus remains on study than becoming presentable.

8. What are the rules students should follow at school? 2 Are the rules at school good or bad? Why?

There are various rules that students should follow at school.

The first and foremost rule is to wear the uniform as per the school’s directions.

The second is to follow the timetable. Thirdly, students must submit their homework at times. Apart from this,
they must pay attention to the lessons in the class. Moreover, they must not harm the infrastructure of the
school.

The rules at the school are good. They are beneficial for the students and the teachers as well.

9. What rules should children follow at home?

Children must obey their parents. They must help their parents to keep the home spic and span. They need to
maintain personal hygiene by bathing daily. Lastly, they must follow a timetable to study effectively.

Are rules suitable for all students? Of course not. Rules are blade to force individuals into certain patterns of be-
haviors usually by the students. All I'm trying to say is that some students would definitely feel dissatisfied and
by the rule. , they're willing to disobey the rule for the simple reason that it's considered in their personal , or the
rule may cause them certain troubles and . What rules are there in your school? / in your companies? In my
schools, students are required to wear uniform, and I guess this is quite universal in almost any school in the
country. Besides this, students must attend classes on time, or otherwise they will be or not allowed to enter
school. The last point to mention is that recently most schools, particularly universities, the students to wear
their student card before coming to class for the fundamental reason that the school want to prevent strangers
from into the school to steal things. That’s all I can say now. In companies:The staff are supposed to arrive on
time to and if they fail to do this, they can from cuts in their salary. In the process of working, entertainment ap-
plications are forbidden as they effect work productivity. So. it’s natural that you can’t browse Facebook notifica-
tions or text message your friends with your smartphone as work comes first. Why is it important to obey law?
As far as I'm concerned, law has a crucial role to play in maintaining social order and stability. The reason why I
feel this way is that if there are penalties on , people will be less willing to commit crimes or . This cannot only
help them become citizens, but they can also avoid causing harm to others. For example, a bill on dropping can
make us more because we’re afraid to get heavily fined and put garbage in certain trash cans. What can parents
and teachers do to help children follow rules? I believe there are a couple of ways that parents and educators
can do to encourage a child to with the rules, the most effective solution is for parents and teachers to set an
role model. , the children will the displayed by their father, mother and teacher and feel to stick to the rules. In
addition, if schools were to adopt a less system and reward children with something for their good , then I think
many will be motivated to obey the rules willingly. Should there is a law to limit the working hours? This law is
beneficial because, in this fast moving world of today, people have become . In order to satisfy their material de-
sires, they are forgetting to draw a line between work and family. If working hours are fixed, then they have
enough time for their family life and leisure. Secondly, leads to stress and can lead to nervous in extreme eases.
People also find time for their regular exercise if working hours are fixed

Is there any situation people disobey the law?

To be honest, I’ve never actually seen anyone litter. I’m sure it must still exist to some low extent, but I genuinely
think people are afraid to do so because of the fines and police presence. However, I know that no country is
perfect and that there are always people who will disobey the law. On another note, I think that perhaps people
who come to Singapore are more likely to throw their trash on the ground if it isn’t something enforced in their
home country.

Do you think laws are acceptable to the people? Why is that?

Answer: I think that most people, by and large, are ready to accept any laws primarily because they are law-abid-
ing citizens, and they respect the laws. Then, of course, some people accept the laws because they are “afraid”
of the consequences of violating the laws. Besides, since most people are law-abiding citizens, because of the
good education and upbringing they receive, they fully understand that without the rule of laws, anarchy, chaos
and criminal behaviour will come to “consume” the entire society and country, which will keep nobody safe.
Therefore, whether they like it or not, they accept the laws.
2. Is there any situation wherein people may disobey some laws? Why is so?
Answer: Basically, there are two different kinds of situations wherein people may disobey the laws. First, if a situ-
ation comes when a person is not able to meet his/her basic needs, such as food and medicines, in order to sur-
vive, the chances are really high that he or she will disobey some laws, no matter how harsh the punishment is.
Secondly, if a person feels that some laws are falling short of ensuring “justice” on a continuous basis, in the
name of ensuring some “vague rule of laws”, it is only to be expected that people will disobey those laws. Inter-
estingly, some people violate laws just because they do not know them or take the laws very lightly.

What can parents and teachers do to help children follow rules?

Parents and teachers can be good role models for children. Children are copycats. If they see their elders follow-
ing rules, they will do it automatically. Just telling them to do something will not have that much effect.

Is it a good thing to break rules sometimes?

It is definitely not good to break rules, but sometimes in case of emergencies, for example, if we have to make
way for an ambulance to pass, we may need to break rules. Sometimes, it is a matter of life and death.
What it is?

Every school/college/office has rules, like wearing the prescribed uniform, coming in time, doing tasks on time
and so on. My school/college/office also has rules about the uniform that we have to wear. It was navy blue
trouser and white shirt on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

However, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, we have a totally white uniform.

Why you don’t like it?

All students/colleague and I do not like this rule. I think we should follow the developed countries and everyone
should be allowed to wear the clothes of their choice and according to one’ personality. Everybody can express
their creativity and style by wearing different clothes.Uniforms should be for certain professionals only like doc-
tors, lawyers or those in military/police
At my place, if anyone breaks this rule, and doesn’t come in uniform, they are fined.
• The fine for the first offence is 100 Rs but if we break the rule more than twice then the fine
goes upto 1000 Rs

How others feel about the rule?

The Rock Garden in Chandigarh is a masterpiece out of waste material. Sukhna lake, is the biggest man-made
lake. It is a beautiful place for the people to enjoy
with their families.

The sector 17 market is a shopper’s paradise. The Rose Garden is Asia’s largest garden.

Explain whether you’ve followed the rule?

Luckily, I have never broken the rule and have always ensured that my uniform is neat and clean but I still hate
this rule.

Conclusion

In the end, I would just tell you that …. some rules brought along a lot of inconvenience and should therefore be
dusted.

Describe a rule that you don’t like Follow-ups

Following are the IELTS Speaking Part-3 follow up questions that could be asked in Describe a rule that you
don’t like cue card:

Why do schools make rules?

Schools make rules to maintain discipline. They are the centres of learning, where children are moulded into re-
sponsible adults. We all have to follow rules, imposed by the government, as adults. So, schools start that pro-
cess of obeying rules in childhood only.

What’s the importance of obeying law?

Without law, we would be living in utter chaos. There would be crime everywhere and life would be difficult for
the common man. For example, if we don’t obey traffic rules, we would have many accidents. If there were no
property rules, people would make their houses anywhere and the whole city would be unplanned.

Why do some people say that rules are made to be broken?

Some people say so because they have a very callous attitude to life. They do not understand the importance of
rules. They are lazy and do not care about things.

Do you think children should follow all kinds of rules?

Yes, children should follow all kinds of rules. They should be made to understand that rules are for their own
betterment. Willingness to follow rules should be instilled in them.

Do you think it is necessary for children to wear school uniforms?

Yes, it is important for school children to wear uniforms. Uniform instills a sense of discipline in children. It
provides an identity to the school. Uniform is also a social leveler. All rich and poor students came at the same
level. Uniform also provides security. If any miscreants come in the school, they can be recognized from afar.

Speaking toipc 6 : Life now and then

What household rules do you think are good idea for families?
-
Do you think a lot children nowdays are spoiled? ( vào web để xem answer của ng bản xứ

ANSWER : Well, I’d like to talk about life in the present and life in past 10 years ago./ Let me
tell you about life today and life a decade ago.

I’m fortunate to have a lovely childhood. In the past, a street, where I'm currently living, used
to be boisterous because I used to hang out with my peers, who lived next door/who were my
neighbors. And I also remember that I kept in touch with my cousin by sending letters; it was
a memorable experience for me. As a child, my parent were so busy, which included earning
money to cover everyday needs/ working hard to make ends meet, taking care of the house,
and caring for me and my siblings . They had many things to worry about but at that time, I
was just a little girl, I was completely carefree, so I couldn't give them a hand. [ My parents want us
to try hard and use all the effort for studying. They break their neck to fulfil out requirement for life and education expenses ]
break one’s neck: nai lưng ra làm, cố gắng hết sức ]

Generally speaking, there are the numble of noticeable [/'nəʊtisəbl/ (a) dể nhận thấy,rõ rệt] changes in
present compared to the past. Firstly, modern lifestyle brings me more convenience, such as Having a
smartphone that I can use for entertainment or social network helps me connect with other people easily
by calling and sending message. Secondly, , I'm a mature /mə't∫ʊə[r]/ person/ an adult so I'm under a lot of
pressure from my study and other relationships. Moreover, A place where I’m living isn't fun like it used to
be, because all my childhood friends have moved away.

A rule I believe is helpful is that people in the family should help/assist each other to reduce the
burden /ˈbɜː.dən/. For example, Since I became an adult, my mind has changed and I am able to help my
parents with household chores instead of just playing. And another rule is children need to respect the
parent and vice versa (used to say that what you have just said is also true in the opposite order). Such as
children should show their respect by greeting and parent shouldn’t read their child’s journal (a written
record of what you have done each day, sometimes including your private thoughts and feelings)/diary
without permission/ asking

[It may be obvious that every family has its own rules. It is essential to have some family rules so that everyone can live com-
fortably together]

From my observation, I’ve seen a lot of children being spoiled these days, I'm not saying all
kids are spoiled, but the majority of them are, especially when they want something so badly.
I first received a cellphone when I was 13, it was a prepaid one for emergencies. But now,I
look around and see really young kids with tablets and phones when they’re just 5 years old.
Technology isn't good for kids of that age. I think they need to go outside and play. It helps
children build up resistance as well as their imaginations, which is very important for growth,
but it seems like parents let the games and computers do their job instead of actually taking
care of their children.

It’s right to blame the parents because I think parent give them nice gifts to make up for the time they
have to spend working. They don't have the time and often lack in the knowledge of how to be good
parents. Parents often refuse to discipline them. They get their kid stuff that whey wanted when they were
young that THEIR parents wouldn't give them. They’re trying to be a good parent by giving their off-
spring more stuff. It really isn't a good method for parenting, give them that expensive stuff without
awarding maybe their children’ll not appreciate. They need to know they are lucky to have stuff and a
family is able to afford things

I understand that parents would do anything for their children, but when children throw/have a tantrum (ăn
vạ), instead of entitling them, parents should help them learn to calm down. Tantrums are a normal part of
child development. They're how young children show that they're upset or frustrated. They can have a
meltdown because they can't get something (like a toy or a parent) to do what they want. Learning to deal
with frustration is a skill that children gain over time and maybe after that they don’t beg or plead for a thing
which is not nescessary.

I never got anything for free when I was a kid, if I was given something it was as an award for doing
good in school. I never asked for anything and I didn't dare doing so, your parents already give you free
shelter, food and you can't expect them to give you more then that. If they do, it should only be be-
cause you're being awarded. My childhood was simple, my parents would always be there to help me
get stuff but I would always have to pay for it myself and if I needed a little extra they would pitch in.
They taught me that if you wanted something you have to work hard for it, nothing is free. I deserves a
reward for my efforts

Some people say that cell phones have improved mordern life. I agree with this point of view because of
many reasons
Firstly, it helps people connect with each other easily by calling and sending message. Secondly, we
can get the hotest news in the world throungh the cell phone by reading newspapers on the web.
Moreover, people can also relax when listening the music on the cell phones. Beside, we can play
games, read stories as well as take photos by using the cell phones
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Obviously, it is hard to compare the life of the ancient people and the life of the people of the twenty first
century because so many changes have occured.
To start with, people were not able to travel such long distances in such short period of time. The
planes were not that popular then because they used to be a very expensive means of transport.  ( chú
ý chỉ nói về 10 năm trước )Moreover, in the past people had to work much harder as they did not
have tools which made their work easier. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by
computers and other machines. In the past the conditions of living were not as comfortable as they are
now. There were not bathrooms and running water in many houses, besides many people could not
afford household appliances like fridge, TV set or vacuum cleaner because they used to be luxurious
goods. Besides, nowadays it is much easier to find the educational materials that you need thanks to
the Internet. Another difference is that in the past there were not that many sources of
entertainment. Therefore people used to spend more time with their friends.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly there is a change in my thinking. Five years ago my thought was absolutely childlike. I believed
that the world is a place without problems. I thought that I will always have time for games and friends
and that will last for ever. Also I was absolutely sure that if I have any problems my parent will always
be around me for help. However I still believe that the world is a great place for living but some times
there are different problems that you have to cope with. And at times you have to deal with these diffi-
culties alone without any help. And that is one of the changes that occurred in the last five years. Now I
have to cope alone and this makes me more responsible and serious than five years ago.

Secondly there is change in my interests. Now I more concentrated on my future and education. I spend
less time with friends and I am preparing for several exams. Five years ago it wasn’t so. I used to be-
lieve that there is nothing more important than playing football or watching cartoon movies during the
whole day.
Despite the changes in my behavior and interests there are several similarities between now and then.
For instance I still believe that time spent with good friends is not a wasted time. And I am still sure that
childhood is the best time in our life.
In conclusion I think that time is unstoppable and wether we like it or not it changes ourselves.
