WHAT wish of Saramā k�m�chantī saramā


hath brought her predamānaḍ dūre hya-
hither? The path leads dhvā jaghur�ḥparāca�ḥ
far away to distant kāsmeh�t�ḥ kā par�tak-
places. myāsīt kathaṃ
What charge hast thou rasāyāataraḥ payāṃs�
for us? Where turns thy �ndrasya dūtīr�ṣ�tā
journey? How hast carām� maha �chantī
thou made thy way o’er paṇayo n�dhīnvaḥ

I come appointed mes- at�ṣkado bh�yasā tan


senger of Indra, seeking na āvat tathā rasāyā
your ample stores of atarampayāṃs�
wealth, O Panis. kīdṛṃṃ �ndraḥ sarame

WHAT is that Indra ā ca ghachān m�tra-


like, what is his aspect menā dadhāmāthāg-
whose envoy, Saramā, havāṃ ghopat�rno
from afar thou comest? bhavāt�
Let him approach, and nāhaṃ taṃ veda da-
we will show him frien- bhyaṃ dabhat sa yas-

THESE are the kine kasta enā ava sṛjāda-


which, Saramā, thou yudhvyutāsmākamā-
seekest, flying, O Blest yudhāsant� t�ghmā
One, to the ends of asenyā vaḥ paṇayo
heaven. vacāṃsyan�ṣavyāstan-
Who will loose these vaḥ santu pāpīḥ
for thee without a
battle? Yea, and
sharp-pointed are our
warlike weapons.

EVEN if your wicked adhṛṣṭo va etavā astu


bodies, O ye Panis, were panthā bṛhaspat�rva
arrow-proof, your ubhayā namṛḷāt
words are weak for ayaṃ n�dh�ḥ sarame
wounding; adr�budhno ghobh�-
And were the path to raśvebh�rvasubh�rn-
you as yet unmastered, yṛṣṭaḥ

case will spare you.

Turn thee not back, for vaṃ no svasṛtvam�nd-
thou shalt be our sister: ro v�duraṅgh�rasaśca
O Blest One, we will ghorāḥ
give thee of the cattle.

BROTHERHOOD, ghokāmā me achada-


sisterhood, I know not yan yadāyamapāta �ta
either: the dread A gi- paṇayovarīyaḥ
rases and Indra know dūram�ta paṇayo

HENCE, far away, ye bṛhaspat�ryā av�ndan

lowing come forth as rāvāṇa ṛṣayaśca
holy Law commandeth, v�prāḥ
Kine which B haspati,
and Soma, is, sages,
and pressing-stones
have found when
hidden.
