MMW 0001-34 - MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN
WORLD
PROBLEM SET 1

1. Watch the video clip “Nature by Numbers” by Cristobal Villa. Write a reflection about the video.
(5pts.)

Oftentimes, we see things in nature as just a surface, looking at it using our bare eyes. But even
before we realize it, there's more to that. Art in nature is the result of one's imagination, creativity, and
expression. And it is infinite. It is not limited to depicting the society or the world in which we live.
Simultaneously, mathematics and nature are linked in several ways as presented in the video.
Mathematics has been regarded as a beautiful art form. Mathematics can be found in leaf patterns,
petals, and even insect wings. It follows the golden ratio, 1:1.6 that creates the golden spiral. This creates
visually proportioned patterns that creates uniqueness. If one would pay close attention to his
surroundings, he would find mathematics in several object in nature. To add, this ratio has also been
used by the one of the greatest artists, Leonardo Da Vinci in his famous artworks like Mona Liza and
Vitruvian man. Indeed, mathematics is more than its bare surface and facade. It also needs our
appreciation, and we can do that by educating ourselves and letting our curiosity fly.

2. What new ideas did you learn in Mathematics? (5 pts.)

We may not realize it, but we are truly surrounded by mathematics. It is not simply concerned with
numbers and figures, but I learned that it is also engaged with symbolic logic and patterns seen in
nature. The Fibonacci sequence has long been taught to us in junior high school, but I had no idea it was
more than just combining numbers; it is the foundation of patterns and the backbone of the golden ratio
that we have today. This sequence has made a significant contribution to broadening the horizon of
things inclined with nature. It morphed into a tool for creating logos, abstracts, and patterns.

3. Show your appreciation of the pages inspired on numbers, geometry and nature by writing an
essay to explain what have you learned from them:
a.) In this world there are different kinds or art, one of those is Art of Nature, wherein we can see
how the mathematics create them as aesthetically pleasing. In our daily task we can encounter

them. We just need to expand our knowledge regarding the intertwined factors of nature and
mathematics. However, I still wonder what life applications can these be incorporated to?
Perhaps some of us have already seen snowflakes or ferns and wondered what structural
pattern they exhibit. The Fractal pattern is the first in line. We might be familiar with these
patterns, since nature is full with fractals. It's constructed by repeating the same pattern at
smaller and smaller scales. They exist geometrically between our familiar dimensions. Last
semester, one of our course requirements was to create our own fractal patterns. To be honest,
it's fairly difficult because everything needs to be proportionate and similar when you zoom out
or zoom in, which is similar to repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback
loop.
Next in line is the Spiral. Subjectively, this could be related to the golden ratio. I notice
plants with this characteristic, and learning about mathematics in nature and why they employ a
spiral structure makes it more interesting. Simultaneously, when I groom myself, I've seen that
curves in any human's ear are concrete representations of natural curvature. And, according to
what I found on the internet, curvature assesses how quickly a curve changes direction at a
specific point. The curve of the outer ear is thought to assist humans to assess the direction from
which sound is coming.
We also have the Voronoi pattern, which is difficult to understand at first glance.
However, I see that some patterns are closer to each other than others. Some areas are
significantly larger than others. And I believe it can be used to address geographical issues.
Indeed, nature is the product of mathematics. Looking at it with little knowledge, we
sometimes overlook what lies between those patterns. We must learn to widen our knowledge
and look at things from a different perspective.

b.) Some of us may be more interested in mathematical problems than in natural arts, but this
may not be the case for everyone. Let us strive to bring these variables together to generate a
wider look on our surroundings. In relation to one another, we may see things differently before
learning their meaning, yet believe it or not, fibonacci is everywhere. Others may regard waves
as simply waves, and cracks as natural phenomena. And yet now I see them on the other side of

the coin. As I perceive these patterns and observe their structures, I am getting more visually

literate. Simultaneously, it does not simply revolve around what we see; the Fibonacci sequence
may also be used in music. The ratio is linked with the rhytmic and harmonic patterns. Because
each note is in harmony, I believe it produces a more appealing sound.
The world is full of mysteries; there are aspects that we didn't even realize were related. We
simply need to appreciate in order to see the true beauty of things and to discover how things
are correlated to mathematics.

4. Research on some applications of Mathematics that has not been covered on our lecture. Provide
your resource and elaborate how is Mathematics is applied for the idea or problem. (10 pts.)

When people hear the word "robot," they may conjure up a variety of ideas. In today's era, robots are
programmed machines that are capable of performing a complex series of operations automatically. In a
nutshell, a robot is a human who is capable of accomplishing tasks that most humans are not capable of
performing or vice versa. Surprisingly, it is not exclusively concerned with machines and numeric codes.
It also includes mathematics. Those interested in studying robotics should endeavor to master
mathematics because it is required in robotics research. To locate the suitably sized pieces, the
measurements needed to complete the tasks, evaluate the performance or detect patterns and links
between speed and power, or wheel diameter and distance traveled, you must first understand some
fundamental mathematical concepts. Simultaneously, these are only a few of the basic math
requirements for Robotics.
Calculus is simply the study of change. Coming from the ABM strand, where we don't have a calculus
class, I'm having trouble grasping the ideas and concepts. However, according to my findings, it is used
to mobilize the robots, with a velocity (the derivative of position) and acceleration (the derivative of
velocity). Each joint in a robotic arm has an angular velocity and acceleration. This is most likely the
most fundamental application of calculus to robotics.
In addition, differential equations are used to operate the robots. A differential equation is frequently
used to describe how a system will develop over time. It says, "If the system is in some condition right
now, then this is how much the state will change by," as if you were on a roller coaster rolling down a
hill.
Your current "state" could be defined by how fast you're traveling (velocity) and how far down the hill
you've gotten. At that point, you can use a differential equation to predict how your speed and position

will change during the next instant of time.

Assume this roller coaster has brakes, and you don't want to go too quickly; you must manage your
speed. So you may take a look at your current situation and use it to calculate how much to apply the
brakes to maintain a steady pace. And it's all based on mathematics. This is also how you get a robot to
move or pick up something where you want it to.
Furthermore, it amazes me how mathematics is used to make pixelated images, which may appear
peculiar at first because I have a lot of questions. However, if you want to locate the edges of objects in
an image, you can use mathematics, specifically derivatives, to compute the change in color or intensity.
You can derive an idea of how much change occurred between those two pixels by subtracting the value
of each pixel by the value of the pixel to the right. This allows the robots to build a massive array of
pixels, with each pixel containing some integers that represent the color for that pixel.
Indeed, the world continues to advance indefinitely. Mathematics is one of the variables that is
significantly contributing to the discovery of new things and making the world a better and more
advanced place.

Mathematics organize patterns and regularities in the world.

In this world, patterns can be seen everywhere. We analyze, see, and even count those pattern. It
involve logical set-up that certainly needs to unlock certain relationship, especially the factors behind
the emergence of the patterns in nature. Beside, how does nature have its own symmetries and
measurement? Consequently, we are also experiencing real-world phenomena that has connection with
patterns. These includes calamities, such as; typhoon, earthquake, volcanic eruption, etc. Is mathematics
has an intereference in these reguralities?

Mathematics
exists everywhere as patterns do
in nature.
Mathematics, like patterns in nature, may be found everywhere. Even as children, we are taught to
count and understand numbers, and these numbers involve patterns. We may evaluate the arrangement
of leaves, branches, flowers, or seeds in plants as we observe them in nature, with the goal of
demonstrating the existence of regular patterns in nature. We also study the Fibonacci sequence as we
get older. And the idea of natural occurence patterns. According to George Hellerup (2020),
“Fibonacci numbers are almost found in any flowers. Sunflowers have the seeds in perfect Fibonacci
order” In accordance to this, we live in a universe of patterns. No two snowflakes are ever exactly
the same, but they all have six-fold symmetry. Tigers and zebras are covered in patterns of stripes,
leopards and hyenas are covered in patterns of spots (Ian Stewart, 1995). This signifies that
everything is not a man-made discovery. It demonstrates a significant adversary of mathematical
patterns and occurs in a natural manner. Mathematics became the answer to solving mysteries and
explaining what was happening in this world. It provides answers to questionable patterns, allowing the
world to be more organized and with minimal ambiguities.
Moreover, mathematics aids in the prediction of natural and man-made occurrences. In the last few
days, I've realized that mathematics is more than just formulas and problems found in academic
literature; it extends beyond that. It is a strategy for analyzing abstract events and nature by detecting
patterns and regularities. Predicting the scale, location, and timing of natural disasters is nearly
impossible, but with the help of mathematics, we can foresee disasters such as hurricanes, floods,

earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, and landslides, among others. In addition, Pavericio (2018)
added that there are great impacts where mathematics can up tighten a several
disorganized curiosities of how such patterns and consistencies collide within the logical process
of observations.
Indeed, It is apparent that patterns and regularities exist, and that studying them provides a great
understanding of system patterns and symmetric structures. As a result, mathematics has become an
suitable tool for determining the optimal measurements, whereas the groundwork for such occurs
naturally.

Mathematics has numerous applications in the world, making it indispensable.

Mathematics is the underlying rule that governs everything with which we interact in our
surroundings. It exist to help the humanity make solutions to world problems. Almost everything is
incorporated by mathematics, making is indispensable. Simultaneously, here are some of the factors
where mathematics is applied to make this world a better place.
As what I have learned in our economic development subject, Growth, Inflation, and Unemployment
are the indicators that can be measured through Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that is utilize to
measure the economy at certain period. And this can only be possible using mathematics. In accordance
to this, mathematics is indeed useful in a variety of fields around the world. The economy (exchange
rates, rises and declines in the value of commodities such as gold and oil, etc.). (Kagan, L., 2020).
Without the use of computation, proper analysis of economic output and outcomes will not be as
accurate as it should be. Besides, mathematics is used by economists to calculate changes in money
amounts, interest rates, and profit maximization.
Moreover, science and mathematics are also intertwined with each other. Kumar and Sherwood
(1997) suggests integration of math and science could bring overlapping concepts and principles
together in a meaningful way, enriching the learning setting and making it suited for developing real-life
scenarios for problem-based learning. This implies the importance of mathematics in scientific
applications. Math can be used by biologists to assess the population expansion of animals or cells. Math
may also be used by sociologists to examine how ideas travel across communities or how cultures
develop over time.
Furthermore, mathematical models which attempts to represent events in quantitative terminologies
have been used in human and animal studies. And for nearly 200 years, veterinary medicine has been
practiced, and various have concentrated on FMD. (Thrusfield, 2007). Indeed, mathematical models of
disease transmission have proven useful in gaining insights into the transmission patterns of infectious

illnesses and the possible impact of various intervention measures throughout the last few decades. It
plays a vital role in virus control, and it has the capability to minimize the severity of epidemics like the
present COVID-19.

oil etc.
To sum it up, mathematics is a wide-scale course that aid the people to come up with solutions in the
problems of the world. We use math to aid us understand the world and we utilize the factors of the world to
understand math. Everything is intertwined. These connections and possibilities can be seen in everyday
math. Therefore, it is essential to recognize and define the significance of mathematics in all
facets of life.
