FEA OF HIGH CAPACITY PARCEL VAN WITH LHB SHELL ON FIAT BOGIE
(Layout no.VP90016)

1. Introduction

The Static stress analysis of High Capacity parcel van with LHB shell on FIAT Bogie
has been done for four load cases. The model is based on the layout no. VP90016. The
basic design is LHB shell on FIAT Bogies. This revised report includes additional
flooring support members. Chequered sheet on flooring support have not being
considered for analysis.

2. Model

The basic design is LHB shell on FIAT Bogies. The model is based on the layout no.
VP90016.
The shell quad and tri elements have been used for modeling quarter model.
Approximately 206410 no. of shell elements have been used (figure 1).

3. Loads

The symmetric boundary conditions have been used for quarter model.
The vertical load of 64 Tonnes has been assumed as weights and loading factors are not
available. Total load has been uniformly distributed on the underframe. But it may be
mentioned that parcel van is not a passenger coach so Pay loading patterns will vary from
time to time. At one time all the payload may be loaded only in center of coach, as other
time or case it may be loaded at one headstock only. So the load values and loading
patterns need to be advised for further analysis.

Four load cases have been analysed

Case 1: Load applied vertical only
Case 2 : Load applied 2000 kN Squeeze Headstock + vertical
Case 3 : Load applied 2000 kN Squeeze CBC + vertical
Case 4 : Load applied 1500 kN Tensile CBC + vertical
4. Permissible stress

welded area j =1.1

5. Results

Case 1: Vertical only

The Von Mises stress observed is 246MPa in side wall sheet cutout (figure 2).
The deflection is -12mm.

Case 2: Squeeze Buffer + vertical

The Maximum Von Mises stress observed is 294 MPa on channel near Headstock.
(figure 3).
The deflection is -9.4 mm.

Case 3: Squeeze CBC + vertical

The Von Mises stress observed is 287 MPa in side wall sheet cutout (figure 4).
The deflection is -10mm.

Case 4: Tensile CBC + vertical

The Von Mises stress observed is 248 MPa at solebar corner. (figure 5).
The deflection is -14.3 mm.

6. Conclusion
The design is safe for the present loading condition. But as it is not a passenger coach so
loading patterns will vary from time to time. So the payload, loading factor and
loading patterns needs to be advised for further analysis.
