The Big Idea: Reading and comprehending section 3

Domain:

Cluster:

Standard:

Specific Objective: The student will demonstrate mastery of the lesson’s standard by
being able to _read and comprehend the reading that they do____________________ with
_80_____% accuracy as measured by __formative assessment__________.

Introduction: This is the second section 3 of the book that we will begin today. Section 3 is

made up of chapters 9 through 14. I will introduce this chapter to the students by first discussing

what has taken place in the book up to the point that we have gotten to. We will start out by

reading chapters 9 and 10. We break up the chapters in the sections, to help break down the time

that the students spend reading and answering their study packets. We will discuss the chapter

questions that go along with the section and will see what we will be getting into in the next few

chapters.

Method(s):
 Whole group discussion

 Individual reading and comprehension

Materials/Equipment/Technology/Community Resources:
 Restart books

 Restart packets

Direct Instruction/Warm-Up Activity/Presentation/Model Lesson/Make Connections: For

direct instruction, I will instruct the students to get their books and packets out to begin work on

Section 3 of Restart. I will inform them of what the game plan is for the day, which entails

looking over the chapter questions, reading the chapters and discussing what we have read.

Guided Practice: The students will take the time to eyeball read each chapter bit by bit as

assigned to them by me (1 page to 2 pages at a time). After they have read the piece that I want

them to read, we will take a moment to discuss what it is that they just read. This is to ensure that

we are all on the same page with what is going on in the story. As we are making our way

through the pages of the chapters, we keep an eye out for vocabulary words in which they will

highlight when they come across them. After they have highlighted them, we take a moment for

the students to take a guess on what the word really means.

Independent Practice: The students will complete their chapter questions that they are capable

of based off of the chapters of the section that we have completed reading. This will give them

an opportunity to go back into their books and find evidence that will help to support their

answers that they are giving.

Differentiation: The whole group discussion provides the opportunity for students to be able to

get some clarification from one another and have the chance to share some ideas on what is

happening. The students individual work also poses the opportunity for the different skill levels

to succeed at a level that they are capable of.

Evaluation/Assessment: Throughout the lesson, the students will be formatively assessing the

students through discussions, as well as their chapter questions to ensure that there is an

understanding of what is being read as well as figuring out if the students are capable of

expressing what they have learned and comprehended from the story!

Wrap-Up (Lesson Closure) /Concluding Activity: To wrap up this lesson, we will take the

time to discuss what we read in the chapters, what questions that we answered and what the

answers were that they got, and what they think is going to happen in the next chapters that we

are going to read.
