SOCIAL MEDIA
By now, we are all aware that social media such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter has had a
tremendous impact on our culture and business. They have revolutionized communication and
socialization. Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as revealed in this article. It is up to each
user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure
they do not fall victim to online dangers.
Its impact on politics can be remarkable. Social websites have played an important role in many elections
around the world, including in the U.S., Iran, and India. They have also served to rally people for a cause,
organize social campaigns and have inspired mass movements and tackle political unrests in many
countries. Second is its impact on business. Many companies are using social media to advertise their
products, build customer loyalty and many other functions. Interactions and feedback from customers
help businesses to understand the market, and better their products and strategies. Social media
presence is a cheap and effective means to enhance brand image and popularity. Social networks also
affect socialization, offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances,
make new friends, trade ideas, and many other activities. Users can stay abreast of the latest global
developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media
sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business prospects.
Unfortunately, social networking also has a few disadvantages. First, social media can be addictive. Many
people and reclusive users emphasize virtual interaction, and ignore the real world outside. If you are
not careful, unscrupulous people can target you for cyber bullying and harassment on social sites.
Schoolchildren, young girls, and women can be victims of online attacks which can create tension and
distress. They also have impact on productivity. Many companies have blocked social networks on their
office Internet as those sites can be distracting. If you are not careful, what you post on the Net can put
your privacy at risk. Revealing personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable to
crimes like identity theft, stalking, fraud, etc.

Media like TV, Radio, Print, Outdoor and Internet are instruments to convey an advertising message to
the public.
Print media includes newspaper or magazines. Newspaper is a major source of information for a large
number of readers. Newspapers allow presentation of detailed messages. It allows prompt delivery of
news and other information with interesting features for readers. It is a high involvement media as readers
are required to devote some effort in reading the message. It is available to masses at a very low cost.
Print media can offer widespread coverage and reliable information. However, it usually has poor
presentation and quality, short life span and often fail to deliver the latest information.
The most popular form of broadcast media is television advertising. It is believed to be the most
influential, exciting medium for reaching audience. It combines visual aid, sound, motion and color. It
allows development of creativity and imagination in delivering messages. However, it is usually quite
expensive, draws limited attention from viewers and the message is usually quite short-lived.
Another type of media is outdoor media, which includes bill boards, neon signs or posters. It is usually a
supportive medium used by advertisers. It can generate considerable frequency level at low cost and
helps to remind the customers. However, it often has limited message and effectiveness, and can also be
