Communication as Influenced by Media and Information

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

As a senior high school learner of the 21st century, one of the most essential skills that you should
be able to develop is the communication skill. This skill is said to be very important to be a competent 21st
century learner.
Communication (from Latin word “commūnicāre”, meaning "to share") is both a process and an art
of transmitting sharing or knowledge, ideas and opinions about issues, people, events and places. It is an
interactive process that allows sharing of meanings about text, images and people’s action and behavior in
a way that receiver understands the meaning and the intent of the message and give proper feedback (MIL
TG, Jose Reuben Alagaran II, Meriam Webster, 1968, Pearson, J., & Nelson, 2000).
Communication in the new millennium has become very accessible. This era is known for the
technological advancement which makes communication easier and faster. The open platform of
communication plays as important tool in the interaction and exchange of information that leads to better
understanding among individuals. With the proper tool and skill, transfer of information is better.
Communication comprises of key components such as sender which is the source of information.
The sender is the encoder of message. The message is the information conveyed in the communication
process that can be verbal or non-verbal. The receiver is the one that will receive the message or the decoder
of the message. The way of how the message is transferred are called channel or medium of communication.
The interaction that took place among the receiver and sender is known as feedback. The disturbances or
hindrances on communication process is called communication barriers that can be external (environmental
and physical) or internal factors (cultural, semantics, psychological and perception of reality).
Generally, communication occurs in two ways namely the mediated and non-mediated
communication. Mediated communication happened through a medium, such as a phone, computer, chat
room, text message, etc. It is sent through wires or satellite and then put back together in the same manner.
Non-mediated communication is simpler than the mediated communication. It has no medium or channel;
the messages are sent directly through face-to-face communication.
Role of Media and Information in Communication
Media and information plays a vital role in effective communication. The technological advances
on this era led to different media channel’s development that makes the access of information easier and
communication faster. The media preferences of an individual are highly affected by their life style and
habits. Media is the means of communication, which are radio and television, newspapers, magazines, and
the internet, that reach or influence people widely.
Media is an effective means to communicate because it is more convenient. It can reach wide range
of audiences, from an individual up to large number of people, regardless of the location and distance.
Media and information is the basic source of livelihood, entertainment, education, information and
awareness on the current events and situations that is taking place when presented in a biased-free manner.
This can in fact a very influential tool for transformation and development if used in proper manner. The
role of media and information is to inform and influence, to guide and educate and to promote participation
and interaction. Media caters all types of information and are available on types namely;
Print media includes mass communication through printed material. These includes newspapers,
magazines, booklets and brochures, periodicals or newsletters, direct mailers, handbills or flyers, billboards,
press release Earlier generation of the 80s and 90s decades utilizes print media not only a form of source of
knowledge and information but also as a form of entertainments, and books.
Broadcast media refers basically to television and radio that is commonly utilized by the people as
sources of information and dissemination. Broadcasting groups have expanded to provide virtual services
consisting of media streaming programs and other web- based services. Integration of the internet has
multiplied the challenges on broadcast media agencies in the provision of quality with quality services with
minimal cost. Radio waves is the simplest and affordable means of transmitting information, knowledge
and entertainment to masses. Channel frequency is utilized by different television broadcasting company to
reach their targeted audience depending on the audience genre preference. Both having wide range of
audience being reached by this media, they are an effective way of publicity, information dissemination and
advertising.
New media is compost of digital communication made viable through computer and other virtual
technologies. It consists of the Internet, the World Wide Web, virtual video cameras, cellular or telephones,
and cable and satellite television and radio. They allow a quick, interactive, targeted, and doubtlessly
democratic communication and transfer of information. It also utilizes the social media, blogs, podcasts,
websites, wikis, immediate messaging, and electronic mail. Interactivity is the main feature of new media.
Voices of different audiences could be heard. Participants in new media varies from specific individual up
to a group of people with common interest. Forms of information that the new media offers can be video,
text, and audio. It allows us the freedom to access the information provided on the most convenient time
and sources that we have.
The preferred media forms as source of information will affect the kind of information gathered.
The access of information is not an issue this days, but the credibility and validity of the information is
becoming the great concern. The false and misleading news was deliberately spreading and has become a
public concern because it turns into a barrier of effective communication. It hinders the progress.
Widespread of such malicious and wrong information results to a more chaotic situation and misconception
on the issues of society, politics, governance, education and also in health. The media and information has
been beneficial. It was a tool for development but it can also serve as a destruction among the nation and
communities. There is no doubt that media and information has a great contribution on the development of
our society.
The role of media and information especially on the 21st learners or the millennials is very important.
In fact, media influences the individual’s perception, behavior and interaction. As students, it is your
responsible to be skeptical and selective on the information on the different media especially on the different
platforms where access in very open and intentions cannot be discerned.
