Tues Lec

1. a.One important concept is that taking thalidomide during pregnancy can cause extreme
disability
b.This is important to me because it serves as a reminder that pregnant women have to
be extremely careful about what they put into their body.
2. a.Another important concept is that the effect that the drug will have on the baby
depends on the stage of development that the baby is at
B. This is important to me because it helps me understand the science behind
pregnancy more. I'm so used to hearing mixed information about things such as taking
certain medications during pregnancy etc and hearing that its fine for a certain period,
and now I know why!
3. a.Another important concept is that there is a link between taking acetaminophen during
pregnancy and the child having ADHD or Autism
b. This is important to me because, as someone who has an interest in autism research,
I have never heard about this link and its something I will be looking into for the future!
4. a.Another important concept is that alcohol has devastating effects when taken by a
pregnant woman, including the development of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
b.This is important to me because I have seen a LOT of campaigns for women to stop
drinking alcohol during pregnancy but almost none for things like smoking or doing other
drugs, it makes a lot more sense to me after seeing the amount of research we have on
the affects of alcohol on the fetus.

Friday lecture

1. A. One important concept is that FAS effects are permanent

b.This is important to me because i was shocked to see that there's no recovery

for FAS, it makes me wonder if there's any future developments in science that
could reverse the effects.

2. A. Another important concept is that FAE can come from any amount of alcohol

b.This is important to me because i’ve seen a lot of misinformation about this,

even from pregnant women saying that they can have a certain amount of drinks
early on and be fine.

3. A. Another interesting concept is that maternal smoking is relatively high in

Indigenous populations

b.This is important to me because, as a future therapist and educator, I want to

understand things to look out for and talk about to my diverse clients.
4. a.Another concept that stood out to me is that there's little to no replicative
evidence that suggests ingesting marijuana could cause measurable harm

b. This is important to me because it shows me that there is more research to be

done on this drug and its possible uses for pregnant moms!

5. a.Another important concept is that there are a lot of medical dilemmas that
come up when treating a pregnant mom with medical conditions (such as the
need for anticonvulsants)

b. This is important to me because as someone going into the health and therapy
field I need to know that life and treatment is complicated and there are many
times where you have to weigh what is most important.

Additional Question 1- (2 points)

The part of the brain growth spurt that has the greatest impact on behavior is the
increase in synapses because the brain is wiring itself and the connections are
malformed then abnormal behavior can occur

Extra Credit question (1 point)

I would advise methadone over heroin because usually methadone babies weigh more
than heroin babies (even though it is still less than average!).
