CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter aims to present the background of study, statement of the

problem, significance of study, scope delimitation, and hypothesis.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Students’ performance can be nurtured in different ways such as;

the proper ways of teachings, students’ participation, students’
environment, and especially school facilities .Teaching strategies of
teachers that can motivate students to be active in learning and in
attending classes. Students’ environment can also affect the
performance of a student, if the environment is not good then the
students cannot focus well in learning. They can’t achieve their goals
and dreams. School facilities is one of the things that can affect the
performance of the students such as; computer laboratory, food
laboratory, science laboratory, library, farm facilities, and etc. It
helps develop the skills of a student that can be used in the near
future. School facilities makes the teachers’ job easily and valuable
through tangible visual aids. If a school have enough and much
facilities, there is a greater percentage for the students to be
developed and nurtured their skills that can be used for achieving
their dreams.

Students’ skills aren’t useful if they don’t enhance and apply it

through practice, actual performance, participation, and assessments.
“…the built environment affects both students’ achievements and
behavior.” (Eric V. Gov.) According to Eric V. environment plays a
vital role to the students’ performance. Environment is one of the
factors that influence growth, health, progress of someone that can be
a result of success and performance. In order to enhance the
performance of the students it is important to have the skills and
should be academically inclined. If the students are more interested
in learning they can develop their skills more. Facilities in school
can give more knowledge and personal experience that can help to
enhance the skills of students, the more the facilities in school, the
more the students learn.

“…students attending schools in better school condition

outperform students in several substandard buildings by several
percentage form ”(Glen Earthman)

It says that most of the students are showing excellent

performance when the environment is fully-conditioned and completes
all of school stuffs that is used by the students. If the school have
a complete and good facilities the students is more motivated to
participate in any school activities and there a lot of opportunities
to be open for them because they have the experience and skills to
perform. If the schools have the complete school facilities the
student will not be able to go in other school to find their needs
that their school don’t have and also to avoid accidents to the
students.

“…school overcrowding also makes it harder for students to learn”

(Glen Earthman)

It state that over population in school is hard for to gain

knowledge, it may cause the student out of focus and may lost their
interest in terms of academic. For example because of students
overpopulation in school, instead of 40 students in every classroom it
increases and became 60 and above. How can the student focus if there
are so many obstacles present? Student’s performance will reflect on
what is happening in the school, if the school is over populated and
the school don’t have the school staff that will sustain the needs of
the students it will make more harder for the students to develop and
improve their skills, the students will lose their interest to attend
their classes and it will result to poor performance of the students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the Effective use of school facilities:

Its effect to students’ academic performance in St. Louise de Marillac
College of Sorsogon – Gubat Campus.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:

 What are the existing facilities provided by the school?

 What is the extent of the utilization of the school
facilities?
 What are the facilities that are effective in your academic
performance?
 What intervention program can be designed to monitor the
effective use of school facilities for the improvement of
academic performance?

OBJECTIVES

 To orient and spread awareness about the importance of the school

facilities.
 To enhance the skills of the students through the help of school
facilities
 To help and encourage other students in terms of choosing their
school.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be beneficial to:

1. Students – it is helpful for them to be oriented in terms of

choosing their school such as Elementary, High School and
College. It will give them awareness about the importance of
school facilities in nurturing their skills that can be use in
their future job.

2. Parents – it will be beneficial for them to know about the

importance of the school facilities that can surely enhance the
skills of their child/children.

3. Teachers – through this, teachers will know the benefits of

having an improve facilities in their way of teaching that can be
useful to enhance the skills of their students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study was conducted at St. Louise de Marillac College of

Sorsogon – Gubat Campus. The instrument used in gathering data that
can be useful in our research is survey questionnaire. The researchers
were randomly selected respondents 10 students per sections of 3 grade
levels for the total of 8 sections with total of 80 respondents.

Review of related literature

This review of related literature was done in order to have

a better and clear understanding of this study. This study also
states other data, studies and literature that could support the
researchers’ claims.

Local Literature

“Educational privilege and other resources that society

makes available allow students to be efficient and
effective...”(Pablo et al., 2011)

The availability of classrooms and other resources really

matters because it is one of the factors that affects students
performance and could be a stepping stone to achieve one’s
excellence and achievement.

“Pupil’s learning outcomes are affected by their learning

experience… (YAS,2005)
Most of the school in the Philippines are criticized and
questioned because of their capability and capacities to support
the students’ basic needs such as classrooms that are well-
organized and conditioned.

“The classroom climate influence the students the students’

their self-esteem and participation in the lesson. There are two
aspects of classroom climate: the physical and social
environment. Physical Climate refers to the arrangement of
chairs, table, fixtures and pieces of furniture, the painting,
lighting and ventilation… (DLSU Research congress.,2014)

The researchers do agree with the statement said by the DLSU

Research Congress, but here in the Philippines they don’t really
focus on the aspect of environment which the physical climate
because as long as the students go to school the physical climate
doesn’t matter anymore. It is because of the overcrowded and
being overpopulated state of the country.

“The classroom still remains to be the main learning

environment in the schools although learning can take place in
other venues…” (H Falsario et al., 2014)

School is one of the basic places that contributes to the

main learning, knowledge and values that is adapted by the
students in a very young age.

In an educational institution, the students are the main

character in the plot, without them, the school, the teacher, and
facilities will be worthless. The topmost priority of educators…”
(Judith B. Junio et al., 2016)

In enhancing students’ performance and skill the school

facilities plays a vital role and responsibility without the hand
in hand help and collaboration of facilities together with the
teaching staffs students’ excellence is not possible, not
reality.

Foreign Literature

“The teaching profession requires prolonged preparation for

navigating future students, because individuals who have undergone
preparation to teach can grow various ways… 9linden,1990)
In creating a university it is important to not just prepare the
teaching staffs but also the school itself. The university can’t be
called as university when the schools aren’t ready and prepared yet.
It is important to give a lot of time and patience to build a
university itself.

“The global importance of science and technology which dominates

in every society that requires an educational system that provides a
venue for the development of scientific knowledge and skills…”(A Eman
et al.,2014) Malaysia

As the 21st Century students mind setting bloom it requires the

society to comply with the way they talk, walk and even think and act.
Through the government’s reply to what the 21st century men and women
they’ve conducted the K-12 even if that school, universities and
institutions aren’t ready yet and now the one who suffer was basically
the students because they had no choice but to comply with the said
curriculum.

“Factors that impact the scholastic accomplishment in the

students of United Arab Emirates (UAE)…School life for students does
not usually go smoothly and students may experience various obstacles
and difficulties that stand in their way to have a good level of
academic achievement… (Samir Dukmak et al., 2015)UAE

Through right and useful school facilities the institution can

lessen the struggle and obstacles faced by the students, teachers and
parents. If a university can sustain and is capable to give the basic
needs of the students it could be a result of better performance of
students.

School atmosphere includes all things, forces and circumstances

in the school which influences the child’s physique, intellect,
emotions and skills… (Muhammad Idris et al., 2014) Pakistan

In assessing students’ intellectual abilities and skills it is

important to have prior knowledge or information and not to be naïve.

“(Tribe and Non-Tribe) As a factor in educational Aspiration in

the school from India… related to the level of aspiration and academic
motivations” (Dr. Jagabandhu Behera & Dr. Rebati Mani Samal,. 2015)
India

This literature states that there are higher privileges of school

facilities from non-tribal groups ones. The Tribal ones because the
tribal groups are focused on preserving their culture while the Non-
Tribal ones are free to go to cities and freed to express ones skills.
Because of lack of school facilities they had no choice but to stick
to the old fashioned culture.

Local Studies

“It is important that the management will always make sure that
the facilities and services are always available, adequate in a good
running condition to better facilities learning between the teachers
and the students thereby the goal of attaining quality of education
for the graduates is always achieved.” (Valdez, 2002)

The school facilities should be useful and should be used

properly for it could be preserved and should be handle with care.

“Academic institution must provide an updated curriculum; modern

facilities and equipment; efficient student services; responsive
organization and administration; and educators must possess effective
teaching techniques and strategies to ensure and maximize the learning
of the students as a response to the needs of professional education,
society… (Laguador & Dotong, 2013; Orence & Laguador, 2013)

The institution should be hand in hand in proposing and

encouraging the administration in installing new and updated
equipments such as laboratories and school libraries.

Environment really affects the attitude and moods of a person. If

a certain students works and occupies an atmosphere which has
excellent teachers, friendly classmates, state-of-the-art facilities
which is free from bad influence and peer-pressure… the component
units of the program and the entire learning environment ae essential
aspects for quality enhancements.”(Bay & Subido,2014)

If the quality of the school facilities are already enhanced then

the quality of education will also be enhanced and boosted.

“… with an aid of adequate facilities, good quality training

serves as a prerequisite that it maintains a high standard of
operation and training in all its forms and that adds to the value and
safety…” (Dacuray et al., 2015)

In order to maintain the high quality standard of the equipments

and facilities we should learn how to use it first we should know the
precautions and instructions. In order to have a quality standard
school we should always value things and handle them with care.
“… emphasized that the aim of education is to create teaching and
learning environment that would bring about desired changes in
learning such as making them more knowledgeable, skillful and acquired
positive attitudes and values.”( Reyes, 2003)

Foreign Studies

“Even the impact of furnishing in educational setting has been

addressed. Anchorage, Alaska school developed a committee dedicated to
selecting “equipments in which the students can work comfortably,
furnishing that can create an aesthetically pleasing ambiance and
furniture’ daily use…”(Kennedy, 2003)

It states that having a good and high quality equipments that can be
use in the school is very important it motivate the student to be more
active.

“This has occurred coincidentally while students performance for

many our nation’s students has remained has stagnant…(U.S. Department
of Education, 2003)… the research is clear that a strong link exist
between the school building and the learning process…” (Blair, 1998)

states that the strong connection between the school building and
students learning process that the building affect the students
learning.

“The issue in school size is critical as communities decide upon

how large to build new schools to enlarge current secondary campuses…
are expending fewer resources and facilities.” (Howley,1994)

Most of the school specially in secondary campus lacks or has

been not enough for the students. The less facilities the less the
students can learn.

“… Physical working conditions and working environment are

positively correlated with students’ academic performance…
(O’Neill,2000)

Having a activity outside of the room can help the students

learned also not just for mentally but also for there working skill

Chapter III

Methods and Procedure

This chapter presents a description of the research design

selection and description of the respondents, research instruments,
data collection procedure and statistical treatments used.
RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers will use the numerical explanatory research method,

to enumerate the impact of school facilities on the academic
performance of the students in St. Louise de Marillac College of
Sorsogon– Gubat Campus. This type of research design can help the
researchers to evaluate and execute the outcomes properly and
organized.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

The researchers choose 10 respondents per section from all of

the grade levels (from Grade 8-Grade10) with of St. Louise de Marillac
College of Sorsogon Gubat Campus. With a total of 80 students randomly
selected. Randomly selection refers to how the sample is drawn from
the population as a whole, while random assignment refers to how the
participants are then assigned to either the experimental or control
groups it is possible to have both random selection and random
assignment in an experiment. The researchers choose this type of
selection to lessen the respondents because it’ll be time consuming if
the researchers would gather all of the students. Moreover, the
insights and opinions of the students will be stated in the
questionnaires given by the researchers.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The researchers used two parts (2) the close ended and the
recommendation, research instruments to obtain or gather data. The
researchers distributed their questionnaires to randomly selected
students from grades 8- 10. After the surveyed questionnaires had been
returned, the researchers conducted interviews to those students who
can’t express their thoughts well through writing. Researchers
conducted direct observations based on ideas on the ideas of
respondents.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers personally distributed the research instruments

which is the survey questionnaire, hand in hand with the teacher in
charge. The respondents were given 10-15 mins. to answer the given
questionnaires. The questionnaire is composed of checklists and
ratings from (5 to 1). The research questionnaire has two parts which
is the close ended and suggestions it is much important to elicit the
respondents insights and recommendations.

The researchers go from one section to another in collecting the

accomplished questionnaires. After getting the results were tallied
and tabulated. These data become the basis of analysis and
interpretation.
