B16 Case 7
Nickel Alloy N07740
Ni-25Cr-20Co Material
ASME B16.34 Valves
Reply: These valves may be pressure-temperature rated as described in this Case provided the
following additional requirements are met:
(a) The construction rules of B16.34 apply except for material and the Appendix B pressure-
temperature rating ceiling pressures noted in (c).
(b) The applicable material requirements of ASME Section 1 Code Case 2702-2 shall apply.
(c) The ceiling pressures for the temperature range -20°F to 1000°F (-29°C to 538°C) shall be
those as listed in ASME B16 Case 1. For temperatures greater than 1000°F (538°C) the
allowable stress of the N07740 material, Table 4 or Table 4M have been used for
pressure-temperature rating development. For temperatures 1000°F (538°C) and less
the strength values of Tables 5, 5M, 6, and 6M have been used for pressure-
temperature rating development.
(d) The pressure-temperature ratings for Standard and Special Class valves constructed
from N07740 material shall be in accordance with Tables 7 & 8 (U.S. Customary psig
units) and Tables 9 & 10 (metric bar units).
(e) Limited Class pressure-temperature ratings shall be developed using B16.34, Appendix V
rules, Table 8 or Table 10 ratings, and y values from ASME Section 1 Code Case 2702-2.
(f) Service temperature for the valves constructed using N07740 material shall not exceed
1472°F (800°C).
(g) Seals, packing and pressure-retaining bolting shall be acceptable for the maximum
service temperature 1472°F (800°C) expected for valves constructed under this Case.
(h) The material described in the inquiry (nickel alloy) shall be considered a Material Group
3 material for B16.34 applications.
(i) This Case number shall be included in the marking of the valve and including on the
Material Test Report.
