Introduction:
This course has been conceived to build the confidence of and assist a Junior/Additional
bridge watch keeper to make the transition into becoming an “Independent Bridge
Watchkeeping Officer”.
The course takes into consideration basic requirements as laid down in the Standards
of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Code 1978 & as
amended):-
Watchkeeping arrangements and principles to be observed (Section A-VIII/2);
Guidance regarding watchkeeping arrangements and principles to be observed
(Section B-VIII/2); and
The Navigation and Radio Watch

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
On the completion of the course, participants will have gained confidence to think and
act independently as a Bridge Navigating Officer.
Experience handling ships under various conditions, basic ship manoeuvring in
normal and emergency situations.
The trainees will revisit the following topics covered previously as part of a

Familiarization with the use of engines and helm for ship manoeuvring;
An understanding of the effects on the behaviour of the ship of wind, current,
shallow water, banks and narrow channel and condition of loading;
An awareness of the importance of planning in a passage or manoeuver and the
need for an alternative plan;
An understanding and awareness of efficient bridge procedures and bridge
teamwork during watchkeeping;
Awareness and understanding of good interactive communication style;
Respond to challenges of Bridge Team members;
Integrate into the Bridge Team and facilitate the Master/Pilot exchange;
Understand functions and operation of installations/equipment, and be familiar
with handling them;
Understand information, how to respond to information from each
station/installation/ equipment and sharing the same with other watchkeeping
personnel;
Maintain an exchange of appropriate communication in any situation including
emergencies; and
Notify the master/chief engineer officer without any hesitation when in any
doubt as to what action to take in the interest of safety.
