RICHARD MEIER

 An American Architect, born in 1934.


 Studied Architecture from Cornell University in 1957
 Started his own practice in New York in 1963
 Deeply influenced by the works of architects in mid-20th century ,
especially that of Le-Corbusier
 Meier has built more using Corbusier's ideas that anyone ,
including le Corbusier himself
 He works also reflects the influence of other designers such as
Meies Van Der Ro He and Frank Lloyd Wright
 His rationalist buildings make prominent use of the colour white
 Nowadays , Richard Meier and partners architects ha suffices in
new York and los Angeles with current projects ranging from
China to Paris , and he was awarded more than 80 awards
between 1968 and 2010

his parents in Essex Fells, New
jersey , it was one of his earliest
completed projects by Meier PROJECT OF BRONX,NEW

 1967- he complete smith house
in Darien , Connecticut , who
later became a typology that
guided the design of private
houses which he designed later
 1970- he started the project of
Bronx , new York , it was one of
his earliest large buildings

 1979- he appeared to work in museum for the

project represented a starting point for
Richard Meier because it was the first FRANKFURT MUSEUM
European large project for him , GERMANY, 1989 DOUGLAS HOUSE ,
MICHIGAN , 1973
he designed the high museum of art in Atlanta,
Georgia
 1984- at the age of 49 Meier was awarded the
first Pritzker award annually by the Hyatt
foundation to homer “ a living architect
whose built work demonstrates a combination
of those qualities of talent , vision and HIGH MUSEUM OF
commitment, which has produced consistent ART, GEORGIA, 1979
and significant contributions to humanity and
the built environment through the art of
architecture
 1984 - he designed the Getty centre in los
angels, California , it is the largest Meier
project t all , it took 13 years to build ( 1984-
1997)

Jubilee church
 Located at Rome
 The design was awarded many international recognitions
including the Pritzker prize 1984
 An imposing white concrete structure dominated by the
three soaring sails
 Known as the white sculpture
 This structure was built with a materiel that acts as a self
cleaner and needs minimum maintenance
 Materiel :Bianco TX Millennium
 The church is conceived as a composition of basic
elements , clearly referred to the purity of the cube and
sphere
 Interiors are rich with natural lighting that comes through the
gaps between the solid elements and brightens the whole
space
 The main source of diffused light is the glass roof between
the shells
Getty centre, los Angeles

 In 1985, Meier was commissioned to build and design the


iconic Getty center in Los Angeles
 And for the next 12 years, he devoted his energies towards
this project.
 The Centre consisted of six main buildings to house the Getty
collection and the educational facilities
 The structure is built with honey-colored travertine mixed
with aluminum panels.
 The complex offers the dual purpose of public galleries and
private study rooms
 And its location in the hills of LA, provided Meier an excellent
opportunity to experiment with his techniques of
manipulating the effects of light.
 Meier was also commissioned for the design and
construction of the Eli and the Edythe Broad Art Centre in
Los Angeles.
Smith house
 Located at Darien, Connecticut
 First of his so called white building
 built upon the pristine Modernism of Le Corbusier’s
work in the 1920s and ’30s
 the back of the Smith House, which faces the water,
has an open façade with three levels of glass
enclosure, providing sweeping, waterfront views.
 "There is a formal layering, giving a sense of
progression, as one moves across the site from the
entrance road down to the shore, and the 'line of
progression' determines the major site axis," Meier has
written.
 "Perpendicular to this axis, the intersecting planes in
the house respond to the rhythms of the slope, trees,
rock outcroppings, and the shoreline."
 A 300 square-foot expansion was added to the master
suite.
