During their first harvest, the church claimed their fields and charged them an
annual fee of 20-30 pesos to use them. The family built their house and thought of
sending Juli to school.

Cabesang Tales became Cabeza de Barangay and ended up paying tax deficits and
other costs with his own money. Cabesang Tales promised Juli she would be able to
study but the rental price increased to 200 pesos eventually. Tales protested but the
friar administrator sent his servants to take back the land. Cabesang Tales rebelled
and said he will only surrender his fields to “the first man who would water them
with blood from his own veins.” Cabesang Tales refused to surrender his lands
because the friars don’t have documents to prove that they own them. Cabesang
Tales decided to pay lawyers and officials to help him but they took advantage of
him and used up his savings.

B. Comparison with Noli me Tangere

Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are the two novels of our National
Hero which is Dr. Jose Rizal which both similar and different from each
other. In a way they both talked about how Spaniards abused us, the
abuse of church by their power and discriminations about Filipinos. Noli Me
Tangere is a love story or romantic novel and El Fili Busterismo is a
political Novel with revenge and it was dedicated to the three fathers or
the GOMBURZA.

Noli me Tangere showed Crisostomo Ibarra as a compassionate , idealistic,

and patient. While in the El Filibusterismo, he was portrayed angry and
vengeful and he was disguised himself named Simoun. Noli Me Tangere is
written in the idea that would exposed the sufferings of the Philippines. In
general the Noli Me Tangere is more on reformist side of Dr. Jose Rizal and
the El Filibusterismo is on his revolutionist.
