seen in Simoun’s opening talk about a legend about the beaver in Sta. Clara. We see that

ii. Chapter Summary

Father Florentino saw the people on the deck laughing. Priests talk

about the increasing social awareness of the Filipinos and about the

investigation on the finances of the church. The captain talks about

the wide stone which believed that it was a home of spirits, but

became a bandit nest. The captain also talks about the legend of

Dona Geronima has a lover in spain, who become an archbishop in

Manila and Dona Geronima pretended and dressed up like a man

and goes to see him to ask for the promises that he was going to

marry her but instead he send Dona Geronima in the Cave near

Pasig River, for her to calm down and this where she lived and died.

Padre Salvi also tells the tale of a Chinese man who was assaulted

by the Caymans, but was rescued when he called St. Nicholas to

help him. Moments later, Ben Zayb started to ask the captain to

point out to him the precise location where a man named Ibarra

was killed. The captain was just give a quick answer, just like he

doesn’t sure also of his answer, and he said, on the lake and he

indicates where Ibarra had been lost thirteen years ago. And it look

like Ben Zayb is still not satisfied of Captain’s answer, and he even

asked about Ibarra’s dead body. It was answered by Father Sibyla,

stated that he was already with his father’s corpse, Father Salvi

said, Ibarra was also a filibuster. Father Camorra replied to what

Father Salvi said, it’s like he underestimated the filibustero, that

they were always unable to pay a dignified funeral. Simoun

becomes silenced and retreats into deep thought.

substitute them for even more unpleasant religious superstitions. It

also implied the legend of Dona Geronima in this chapter where she

goes to see her lover in spain to ask for the promises that he was

going to marry her but instead of marrying the woman, he sends

his lover to the cave near Pasig River. It also discussed here where

the precise location Ibarra killed.

b. Interpretation of your Junior High School Teacher for this Chapter

As I remember my teacher in junior high school tell us a story about the legends that

long time ago our history before is full of legends. She also said that legends are very

important to our culture because we learned something that can remind us of what history

makes. However, it was also said that, sometime legends also gives fear to people minds,

but it is also provide more insight and knowledge in the future, wherein people learned it,

and can use those legends, especially for the new generation to treasured the history that

Philippines have in the past decades.

c. Personal Reflection

In my personal view from the novel “El Filibustersimo entitled “Ang Alamat”, Filipinos love

legends. In stories like this, the creative reason for the creation of things is something that is

very entertaining and instructive. There are things that are believed to be untrue but

personal decisions will prevail and come first whether they believe or not. Therefore, do not

immediately believe the things that are heard and read because there is a high probability

that it may not be true so it is only necessary to value its origin if it is true or worthy to

believed and shared. The sample legends about Dona Geronima represent a Filipino woman

for being patient and strong enough; it shows the loyalty of the Filipinas to the sworn love. It

aims to show society that everything or happening in our society has purpose. Let’s just find

out where it comes from to determine the solution to every problem we face. What I learned

in this chapter is we should. We should appreciate and learned from the past because we

have a lot of questions that only the past can answer. Legend is the answer to our questions,

it will give us clarity on why things happen and why we are believing on something. And also

do not judge someone even if you are not of the same race or culture

d. Comparison with Noli Me Tangere

i. The Intended Messages of Both Novels

The message of Rizal’s Masterpiece, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo is

clear, the current system of governing the Philippines through self seeking

officials and corruptions. Both of Rizal’s novels had an intense effect on Philippine

society and its people in terms of views about discrimination, criticizing national

identity, abuse of powers and the issue about colonization on the whole nation

and people’s lives. I therefore conclude that the real message of both novels later

on became the motivation an d the reason to start the Philippine Revolution.

ii. Differences between the Two Novels

Noli Me Tangere is a social novel devoted to his motherland, the Philippines,

pursuing change for equal justice for Filipinos. It’s all about the Filipino people

suffered under the Spanish colonial government and expose the wrong doing of

Spaniards in the Philippines. While El Filibusterismo is a political book, the three

martyrs’ priests are committed to GomBurZa. It is assumed that they are still

victims of the Spanish government’s cruelty, resulting in the revolt.

a. How does El filibusterismo impact our current society?

The work of Rizal remains important to our current society today. Unfortunately, this

also means that many of the social ills he fought against continue to afflict Philippine

society today. This novel is not only a literary piece but also a proportion of one’s life

and experience. The booked awakened the Filipinos especially to the youth in the

past until present. In the war, we may not be a win, but what matter is that we

continue to fight and follow what we desire and what is the best for our country just

like what Jose Rizal said. The intermingling of history and literature is important in

inculcating the awareness that what has transpired before will still persist today

because the message is still realized and signified by a historical and textual being.

b. Is the novel too radical for the national hero? Why or why not?

Yes, because it was clear that it is historical in the sense because of man’s lived

experience and textual because man inheres and share meanings. And to the

GomBurZa, the three priest where he dedicate this novel and also for us, without

such then it will be impossible for us to understand the content and context of a

particular historical event mirrored in literary novel of our national hero.

c. Do you believe that radicalism can bring change to the country? Why or

why not?

No, we can’t predict the changes that would happen, changes to the country would

never be caused of radicalism. A change is largely unpredictable. If there is a change,

it will not be permanent though, because we do not hold on to a person’s belief and

actions.

d. Did Jose Rizal really change his thoughts about his purpose for change in

the Philippine society? Why or why not?

No, because from the very beginning, Rizal never sought changes for the Philippines.

All he wants is to have reforms for the Filipinos and have equal rights, and to have

valued in education. He wanted the Philippines to become a province of Spain.
