Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

As we approach the 21st Century a widely spread virus in China

has shocked the world as its death toll continues to rise. Before the end of

2019, The World Health Organization announced a virus named Novel

Corona Virus (NCoV). As it progresses to spread, it has changed to

Corona Virus Discovered in 2019 (CoViD-19), it abruptly spread not just in

Wuhan, China also to other residing countries. After a couple of months, it

widely affected the living of almost all people around the world.

People around the world observed the strict implementation of

social distancing, school closures, and quarantine. It caused abrupt

anxiety even among teachers. (Toquero-Talindong, 2020).

Right now, we are living in what is probably the worst nightmare of

our life to worldwide schooling. The pandemic disturbs the existence of

many young individuals, their folks, and teachers. Extreme efforts should

be implemented at any rate to diminish the effect through distant learning

ways. Based on designed online survey collected data from Filipino

teachers written by (Toquero-Talindong, 2020).

This situation has changed the way of learning of students. Schools

and universities change their curriculums and start online classes. Those

students who lack internet access are free to choose between online and

modular learning curriculum. A sudden change in learning modality

affects students not just to them but also to those parents and teachers.

Currently, around the world is observing this new way of learning

teachers with online classes do their class in Google Meet and other

softwares while those who choose modular learning teachers undergo

home visitation to still get in touch with their students.

With these supporting facts, the researchers intended to conduct a

study that can help parents, teachers especially students who are widely

affected by this pandemic.

Background of the Study

As student- centered learning becomes increasingly mainstream in

public K-12 education, there is a need for better understanding of teacher

and principal perceptions regarding this monumental change in education.

More specifically, in this study, the researchers attempted to capture how

educators who have transitioned to a student-centered approach to

education perceive or feel about the transition and subsequent new

approach to instruction, how parents cope up with the change of situation

in modular learning, as well as how the students deal in self-learning

modality. The sudden shift of learning brought by the pandemic effects

continues to bring chaos. Experiences in schooling teachers, parents, and

students become worse. The world has opened a new way of adapting

through modernized learning for the people.

In foreign and local countries, online platforms and modules are

being observed. This sudden change has brought chaos and confusion to

students and parents. Attending to children and youth educational needs

during the crisis is essential Reimers (2020). Based on them, documents

intended to support education leaders at various levels of education

governance. May it be in public or private educational organizations, in

formulating adaptive, coherent, effective, and equitable education

responses to a crisis that will significantly disrupt educational opportunities

globally (p.3).
Aside from international response created by foreign countries, the

Philippines has also made a step to conquer this pandemic. Department of

Education (DepEd) proposed a program that helps students learn using

modules. Follow up study was created by Toquero and Toledong (2020) in

the conduct of the study they collected data from Filipino teachers’

practices on how they deal with anxiety due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It

includes information seeking, preventive measures, and other coping

mechanisms to deal with anxiety during the quarantine period. Results

exposed that teachers practice virtual learning, communicate with the

professional community, adhere to quarantine requirements and find

purposeful activities to deal with anxiety due to the suspension of national

school-related activities in the country brought by the pandemic (Toquero-

Talindong, 2020).

The literature considers gaps and lapses due to safety protocols.

Participants to be qualified for the study must pass the criteria for safety

purposes. Following suggested Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) guidelines

is advised.
Its significance likewise seeks to recognize teachers, parents, and

students lived experiences about module learning in the following schools;

Tanauan School of Arts and Trade of Tanauan, Leyte and Manaybanay

National High School, of Pastrana Leyte.

Directing this will be important to students in addition to the

guardians and instructors on what ways would they be able to adjust to

the "New Normal" learning and teaching. It will help improve the learning

cycle of the respondents to be mentally and emotionally easier.

Statement of the Problem

Closures of schools caused the shift from the traditional face-to-

face to distance modular learning as implemented by DepEd. They need

to adapt to continue the education. Since teachers, parents, and students,

are new to this learning set up. As researchers, we need to explore the

lived experiences of these individuals that undergo module learning. The

study aims to assess the lived experiences of Teacher, Parents, and

Students in Module Learning at Tanauan School of Arts and Trade of

Tanauan, Leyte and Manaybanay National High School, of Pastrana

Leyte. The study as well further defines how the pandemic influences the

said respondents.

Most particularly, this study wish to answer the following queries to

provide data needed in this study.

1. How would they describe their experiences as a teacher in

conducting the modular learning in this pandemic times?

2. How this situation affects the student’s performance in

their perspective schools?

3. How these experiences are shaped them as parents,

teachers, and students in times of pandemic?

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to analyze what are the different

lived experiences of the students, teachers, and parents. The result

coming from the respondents of this study will be the basis on how

can we come up with a way to minimize the effect of this pandemic,

especially to the general welfare of students.

Significance of Study

This study likewise seeks to recognize teachers, parents, and

students lived experiences about module learning in the following schools;

Tanauan School of Arts and Trade of Tanauan, Leyte and Manaybanay

National High School, of Pastrana Leyte.

Different lived experiences and struggles of Teachers, Parents, and

Students in the mentioned schools will be recorded through video.

Population of respondents needed to complete the research survey will be

allocated.

The results of this study will benefit the Academic Institution,

Parents, Students, and Future Researchers.

Academic Institution. This study may provide new knowledge and

awareness to the school administration, teachers and staff about the live

experiences in Module Learning which will be their basis for some

instructional innovations.
Parents. This will help the parents of the students involved in this

study to adjust and deal with module learning difficulties.

Students. This will give the students insights to overcome

problems and challenges they face in module learning.

Future Researchers. This study can be a source of information for

the future researchers, and other people in formulating different strategies

in coping with problems faced in module learning.

The researchers understand the extent of constraint of this

investigation; however, this study chose to focus only on gathering

information about the Teachers Parents, and Students live experiences in

Module Learning.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

Further, the researchers propose to conduct study among some

teachers, parents, and students of Tanauan Schools of Arts and Trade of

Tanauan, Leyte and Manaybanay National High School, of Pastrana

Leyte.
The respondents will be purposively selected during the conduct of

the study.

Definition of Terms

The terms are defined conceptually and operationally to give the

readers a clear understanding of the terms as to relate to the context of

the study.

Learning Module. It is a tool that provides course materials in a

logical, sequential, order, guiding students through the content and

assessments in the order specified by the teacher.

Student-centered Learning. This refers to a wide variety of

educational programs, learning experiences, instructional approaches,

and academic-support strategies that are intended to address the distinct

learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual

students and groups of students

Self-instructional Module. It is a way of learning at your own

pace about a new topic.

Phenomenological Study. Phenomenology is the study of

structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of

view. The central structure of an experience is its intentionality, its being

directed toward something, as it is an experience of or about some object .
