CHAPTER IV

Presentation, Discussion, and Interpretation of Data

The chapter includes the presentation, discussion, and interpretation of

data. It further decodes the most imperative knowledge and understanding

necessary for drawing conclusions and recommendations. This part described

hog waste management and its effect to the health status of the residents from

Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas.

1. Problems encountered by the community due to improper waste

management

There are five problems encountered by the community due to improper

waste management: Skin and Eye irritation, Affecting Sustainable Economic

Development, Water Pollution, Negative effects on health status, and Multiple

Population of insects that cause diseases to humans. This figure shows the

percentage of the students who said yes that the following problems are being

encountered by them due to improper waste management.

Figure 1 presents the problems being encountered by the community due

to improper waste management. Out of 50 respondents, 96 percent (96%) of

them answered yes, which means that having a multiple population of insects

cause diseases to humans is one of the problems faced by the residents of Brgy.

Salaban, San Jose, Batangas. The presence of large number of flies can irritate

farm workers, affect produce, caused neighbors to complain and affect the

reputation of the farm, so good farm management must include effective fly

control. (Stein, 2014)

The figure revealed that 96 percent (96%) of the residents in Brgy.

Salaban, San Jose, Batangas recognized that improper hog waste management

leads to negative effects on health status as one of the problems being

encountered by the community

After distributing the questionnaire, it comes out that 84 percent (84%) of

the respondents defined that experiencing water pollution is one of the problem

encountered by the community .This means that the water pollution is really

affecting the residents of Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas. Pig waste also

contributes to groundwater pollution in the forms of groundwater seepage and

waste spray, which is essentially the usage of a sprinkler to spray vats of pig

waste into neighboring areas. (Wikipedia.org)

The figure revealed that 66 percent (66%) of the residents in Brgy.

Salaban, San Jose, Batangas identified that sustainable economic development

is being affected due to improper waste management. According to the answers

of the respondents, Sustainable economic development is really affected due to

improper waste management. According to Grimsley (2018), Sustainable

economic development is economic growth that attempts to satisfy the needs of

humans but in a manner that sustains natural resources and the environment for

future generations.

The figure presents that out of 50 respondents, 44 percent (44%) of them

answered yes, which means that skin and eye irritation is a problem faced by the

residents of Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas. Skin disease can affect people

and many kinds of animals. It is not caused by a worm at all, but rather by

fungus that can grow in the skin of pigs. (KingCounty.gov)

Figure 2 presents the effects recognized by the respondents due to

improper waste management. 92 percent (92%) of the respondents answered

yes, which means that of Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas considered that the

hog waste causes respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases to family. According

to Leiting (2000) Digestive disorders are common in growing and finishing pigs.

One or a combination of causes can trigger these disorders. Infectious causes

and the ability to limit exposure to them can be very important. Respiratory

diseases may be caused by infection, by smoking tobacco, or by breathing in

secondhand tobacco smoke, radon, asbestos, or other forms of air pollution.

The figure revealed that 92 percent (92%) of the residents of Brgy.

water to the residents of the community. Based from the result, the respondents

believe that

which means that losing food appetite due to foul odor of hog waste is one of the

problem faced by the residents of Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas. According

to Wikepedia.org Appetite is the desire to eat food, sometimes due to hunger by

to protect their foods from flies and other insect that is possibly the disease

carrier.

After breaking down the questionnaire, it shows that 88 percent (88%) of

the respondents rated the difficulty in breathing as an effect to family due to

improper waste management.

Eighty-eight percent (88%) from the 50 respondents of Brgy.Salaban, San

Jose, Batangas considered that the bad odor sticks to clothes because of

improper waste management.

B. School in the community

Figure 3 presents the problems encountered due to improper waste

management. Out of 50 respondents 92 percent (92%) of them answered yes,

which means that the students feel uncomfortable going to school because of

bad odor due to hog waste. Based from the result, the residents from Brgy.

Salaban, San Jose, Batangas is really affected due to improper waste

management.

From the evaluation of the answers of the respondents, 92 percent (92%)

defined that the children’s academic performance gets affected due to foul odor

of hog waste is one of the problems encountered of the resident of Brgy.Salaban,

San Jose, Batangas.

The figure revealed that 84 percent (84%) of the respondents of

Brgy.Salaban, San Jose, Batangas identified that the students complain the

negative effects of hog waste. According to the answer of the respondents, the

negative effect of hog waste is really affects to the students. According to

Change.org (2019) having a dirty school environment tells others we don’t care

for other school. The waste we throw not only affects us but are planet too.

After distributing the questionnaire, it comes out that 70 percent (70%) of

the respondents defined the student fails to attend classes due to diseases

encountered by them from stench of hog waste as one of the problems faced by

the residents of Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas.

The figure presents the problems encountered due to improper waste

management. Out of 50 respondents, 60 percent (60%) of them answered yes,

which means that the students are transferred to different schools because of

improper waste management implemented in community.

C. Community

Figure 3 presents problems faced due to improper waste management.

Out of 50 respondents, 100 percent (100%) of them answered yes, which means

that the residents bring pathological insects like flies and mosquitos. The control

of flies, cockroaches and other insects is important because they can transmit

disease among residents population. (Linden J, 2013)

From the evaluation of the answer of the respondents, 94 percent (94%)

of respondent defined that the hog waste gives the resident unsanitary

environment is one of the problems encountered of the resident of Brgy.

Salaban, San Jose, Batangas. The concentration of livestock in factory farms

leads to a buildup of animal waste in the areas where these livestock operations

reside. The enormous volumes of waste cannot be assimilated by natural

The figure revealed that 92 percent (92%) of the respondents of

Brgy.Salaban, San Jose, Batangas identified that there’s a misunderstanding

between the piggery owner and residents. According to the answer of the

respondents, the negative effect of hog waste is really affect to the residents

After distributing the questionnaire, it comes out that 88 percent (88%) of

the respondents defined the groundwater depletion as one of the problems faced

by the residents of Brgy. Salaban, San Jose, Batangas. Groundwater depletion is

a serious threat to the environment. The majority of our bodies and the Earth is

made up of water. We may see the beautiful, flowing surface waters that make

up the oceans, lakes and rivers, but this water is not always safe for consumption

and is much more difficult to filter than groundwater. (Rinkesh, 2015)

The figure presents the problems encountered due to improper waste

management. Out of 50 respondents 74 percent (74%) of them answered yes,

which means that the residents experiencing contagious disease. As a

responsible livestock owner, you can take measures to reduce the spread of pig-
