Text 2 for questions 3 & 4

Located in southern Peru, Machu Picchu lies on top of a mountain that’s only accessible by train
or a four-day trek. Rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, it was an important cultural center
for the Inca civilization but was abandoned when the Spanish invaded the region. (It is famously
referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” though that is actually Vilcabamba). The location was
made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, and it was named one of the New Seven Wonders
of the World in 2007. Concerns over growing numbers of tourists have led to limitations on how
many people can enter the site, though only by a fraction of what is necessary. Hopefully, they
will limit it even more so this site can last for hundreds of years more.

The easiest way to get to from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes (the
town located a few miles from the site). It’s a scenic 3.5-hour trip each way along tracks that run
right along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, with dramatic canyon walls on either side.
The other way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of a multi-day Inca trail
tour, which is the far more scenic and rewarding way.

The Black Death (1346-53)

The 14th century epidemic of the “Black Death,” also called the black plague or bubonic plague,
across Europe and Asia, has become one of the most infamous events in history. The plague
killed 30-60 percent of the entire population of Europe, claiming a grand total of anywhere
between 75 to 200 million lives. Population growth did not resume until a full century later, and
the world population did not recover until the 17th century. The profound religious, social, and
economic upheavals resulting from the Black Plague were permanent.

The massive death toll caused an extreme labor shortage, which meant higher wages for the
peasants and a greater choice of who they wanted to work for. The land was plentiful, and lords
were forced to try and make conditions more attractive to the peasants. Serfdom all but
disappeared as a result, and this “golden age” of prosperity would not be soon forgotten. Decades
later, when the feudal lords tried to roll back these benefits and return to the old ways, the result
was widespread peasant revolts. The Black Death also helped break the absolute authority of the
Catholic Church.

Agence France-Presse Jakarta / Mon, February 15, 2021

At least four people have died and 14 are missing after a landslide caused by torrential rains
swept away several homes in Nganjuk Regency in East Java, officials said Monday, with
hundreds forced to flee their flooded homes.

Twenty-one people were initially reported missing, but three individuals were rescued after the
disaster that struck Sunday evening in the rural part of East Java.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said it had found four bodies, but were still
looking for 14 people reported missing.

"We cannot bring heavy equipment to the site of the landslides currently. However, we are
currently trying to make our way," the East Java Search and Rescue Agency told AFP in a
written statement.

The landslide also seriously damaged eight houses, said the agency.

In Pasuruan, a town in the same province, was also flooded after a river overflowed due to the
heavy rains, forcing more than 350 people to flee their homes, the agency added.

Fatal landslides and flash floods are common across the archipelago, where seasonal downpours
are frequent and relentless.

In January at least 21 people died and more than 60,000 were evacuated after a series of major
floods hit South Kalimantan.
