Contents:
I. Summary
The article examines the role of social media groups for online
freelance workers in the Philippines digital workers obtaining “gigs” from
online labor platforms such as Upwork and Onlinejobs.ph for social
facilitation and collective organizing. The article first problematizes labor
marginality in the context of online freelance platform workers situated in
the middle of competing narratives of precarity and opportunity. The first
author of the article was Cheryll Ruth R. Soriano she is the Principal
Investigator for Fairwork Philippines also a professor of the Department of
Communication at De La Salle University in Manila. The other author was
Dr. Jason Vincent A. Cabanes he is a full professor in Communication at
De La Salle University Manila.

The authors also focused on the following questions: What function do

Facebook groups perform for these geographically isolated workers? What
possibilities do these social media groups perform for organizing digital
workers to advance labor rights and standards?

The authors also point out, that however, these solidarities undermine the
workers’ resistive potential, as they reinforce rather than impose pressure
toward critical structural changes that can improve the viability of digital
labor conditions.

II.Provide background information.

The first author of the article was Cheryll Ruth R. Soriano she is the
Principal Investigator for Fairwork Philippines also a professor of the
Department of Communication at De La Salle University in Manila. Her
research focuses on the implications of digital media on social and
organizational practices and formations. In particular, she examines
emerging forms of labor organization and communicative relationships in the
platform economy, worker conditions, class relations, solidarity formations,
and the underlying institutional structures shaping them.
The other author was Dr. Jason Vincent A. Cabanes he is a full
professor in Communication at De La Salle University Manila. He holds a
Ph.D. from the University of Leed, UK. He currently chairs of the Ethnicity
and Race in Communication Division of the International Communication
Association and associate editor of the top-tier journal Communications,
Culture and Critique’s. His primary research focus is on the mediation of
cross-cultural intimacies and solidarities. He also does work on digital labor
in the global South, including on digital disinformation production. Based on
the credentials, the environment they work, the organization they belong
and the different research they’ve done its shows that they are truly are
experts in their own field.
The article “Entrepreneurial Solidarities: Social Media Collectives and
Filipino Digital Platform Workers:” shows the complexity of how digital
workers in the global South experience precarity and, crucially, the kinds of
labor solidarity that might emerge out of the social media spaces that are so
central in the digital worker. The authors also focused on the following
questions: What function do Facebook groups perform for these
geographically isolated workers? What possibilities do these social media
groups perform for organizing digital workers to advance labor rights and
standards?
The subject matter becomes important especially in the Philippines,
wherein the government sees digital work as a geographically flexible
alternative to the country’s high rate of overseas labor migration as well as a
competitive choice for young graduates who do not possess credentials from
the country’s elite universities .Also many digital workers in the Philippines

also see their jobs as a highly attractive option, especially in a country

where employment conditions are fraught with financial stagnation and
socioeconomic tensions .
III.Summarize the main points of the article.
The major points in the article are how it shows that in the digital labor
there is what we called “self- exploitation” the digital workers themselves do
it , many of whom are willing and prepared to take the risks of insecure work
or accept low pay in hopes of obtaining future advancement.
Another was the article point out how Filipino platform laborers in particular
imagine themselves as a cut above other workers which they see themselves
as well-positioned to provide skilled global service work, develop their
professional selves through the distinct challenges of their jobs, and live a
flexible life that circumvents the heavy traffic, bad roads, inefficient public
transport, and other infrastructural immobility’s in their country. The authors
also point out, that however, these solidarities undermine the workers’
resistive potential, as they reinforce rather than impose pressure toward
critical structural changes that can improve the viability of digital labor
conditions.
The authors present their topics with facts from other related literature,
through face to face interview, by joining the freelancer’s group in Facebook
and joining a focus group discussion with them to fully understand their
work. By this the authors enable to present the information about Filipino
digital workers in a manner that reader would understand the situation of
the Filipino digital worker.
Literature search is an important part of research writing. When you
conduct a literature search online, you should be able to dig out relevant
published articles. The purpose of keywords in a research paper is to help
other researchers find your paper when they are conducting a search on the
topic. The authors not only defined the terms to be searchable but also helps
to understand technical terms that readers may confused. The authors used
other authors definition and explanation to help the reader understand the
subject matter.
Based on the article the methodology used by the authors are interview
wherein they ask 31 freelancer digital worker, they also used self-experience
they join a focus group discussion of digital worker and lastly, they used the

method of observation the authors observe the participant how to they do

they job.

IV. Critique (choose one or two questions below)

This article educates me about Digital work platforms how it increases
worker welfare by offering unparalleled flexibility in setting work hours and
most permit a workday to be segmented, allowing certain parts of the
population who otherwise would not be able to work due to other
commitments or constraints and to have some source of income. And also
helps me to understand the pros and cons of being in the field of digital
economy, not all the aspect is positive to the digital workers but also there
are a lot of things that risk are always around example late payments, no
work, no pay, benefits are not given and the job is project based.

V. Conclusion
Since online creative freelancing is seen as the next major outsourcing
segment for the country given that about 1.5 million Filipinos are already
participating in the gig economy. (https://wageindicator.org/)In this
scenario its better to understand this type of economy to protect the Filipino
digital worker, the law must be created to be able to protect digital worker
from employees who are not giving the right compensation and other
benefits this cause Filipino workers to be abused. The article helps me to
understand the new type of economy that may be one day will become a
good source of income to our country.
