PE Teaching Philosophy

Physical Education is one of the most important subjects for children and young adults
to take. PE should be an inclusive environment. What is meant by inclusive environment is
allowing all students to have equal opportunities to engage in activities regardless of athletic
skill and/or stature.
Some goals I have for student learning is to make sure each student is meeting national
and state K through 12th grade standards for physical education. It is imperative for students to
show competency is each psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains of learning to get the
most out of a PE lesson. However, a personal goal of mine is based on the affective domain of
learning. My goal is to help students find at least one activity they can use throughout their
lives to remain healthy and active. The reason this is important to me is when I was a student, it
seemed as though we did the same units every year. It is hard for students that are not athletes
to enjoy physical education/activity if the classes always revolve around team sports.
The teaching style I would prefer is to lecture and demonstrate tasks and skills at a
minimum to allow students to have the maximum amount of time to practice and participate in
the unit we are covering. In doing so, the class would be a very active learning environment.
Safety is important to me as a physical educator. I would like students perform tasks that push
their comfort level within reason. However, I would allow them to perform a modified task if
they are completely uncomfortable. It is important to address any possible hazards regarding
the lesson and environment we are in. In comparison, I would be actively monitoring the gym
to provide feedback to students as well as ensuring their safety. An idea to add student
involvement in their learning is to provide a “wish list” where students pick what activities they
want to learn, and the most popular votes would be the units I teach. The methods I have
selected could potentially help me in my personal goal of giving students the knowledge to
pursue a lifetime activity.
Assessments are important to see where the students are at in their learning. I would
use skill assessments for this reason. Using the results of the skill assessments, I could properly
progress through the lessons and not rush student learning. Cognitive assessments were not
used when I was a PE student, even though they are important. I would use cognitive
assessments to assure my students are grasping concepts related to the activities in class. The
reason for this is students need to understand why they are performing the tasks in class for
them to have a proper physical education.
When it comes to teaching PE, I strongly believe that everyone should have the
opportunity to participate in physical activity. I do not agree with separating a class based on
skill level. Instead, I would promote an environment where everyone can learn together. I
would also have a strict no discrimination and bullying policy in my class. Every student in the
United States has the right to a quality education regardless of their race, gender, sexual
orientation, etc. As a teacher, it my goal to provide this in safe and healthy learning
environment.
