Project Report: A case study

Mr Jeff D’souza is the head of a manufacturing plant and


reports to CEO Mr Christiaan John. Mr D’souza joined this
company 3 years back and his prior experience was with an
engineering company which produced medical devices. He
was hired assuming that he will help the company to
transform, however, a very minimal growth was seen since
the time he was hired and given the role of plant head.

Mr John wants Mr D’souza to explore opportunity to reduce


the cost of inventory and processing time so that the factory
remains profitable. Mr John also wants Mr D’souza to explore
further opportunities for increasing capacity

In Sep’2018, the CEO called a meeting and sought input from all
the leads/heads in the company (Ref: Org Structure).

All the leads/heads provided their input but the CEO realized that
these input would yield very minimal results, hence he wanted Mr
D’souza to consult his further team and provide a detail road map
to achieve the set objectives. Mr D’souza agreed and requested
for 45 days of time to come up with the desired plan.

Mr D’souza worked very hard during next 30 days and conducted


several meetings with the sub leads, line workers and visited the
manufacturing floor several times.

He also got support from SME team lead, Mac Café, who agreed
to provide all possible support.

Mr D’souza then came up with a strategy to take up a special


project which should solve the current need and transform the
company’s manufacturing capability.

In early November, he presented the extensively developed


project plan to the CEO along with other heads. The CEO found it
logical and approved the project conceptually, however, he
wanted Mr D’souza to have control on financials.

Finally the project got approved.

About company & Business Case :

ABCDE Pvt Ltd. produces various products like Tablet,


Capsules, Parenteral, Nasal, patches etc. The plant
contributes 33% of total OSD volume of entire company
which is significant in terms of number of Batches.

Why Project?

Plant having baseline lead time 24 days (Jan to Oct). Project


aims to reduce Cycle/lead-time by deploying LSS tools and
methodology to reduce cycle time/waiting time of various
stages.

The Project will help to reduce the WIP and also help to
arrest the issues related to more lead time.
