Answer the following problems:

1. Gold-191 has a half-life of 12.4 hours. What mass of this isotope would remain after 49.6
hours if you started with a 7.50 mg sample of pure gold-191?

Given:

A0: 7.50 mg

Time lapse: 49.6 hours

Half-life: 12.4 hours

Required: mass: Ar: ?

Solution:

Ar = A0 (0.5) Time lapse / half life

= 7.50 (0.5) 49.6 hours / 12.4

= 7.50 (0.5)4

= 7.50 (0.0625)

= 0.46875 mg

Answer: Ar = 0.469 mg

2. A sample of iodine-126 with an original mass of 15.00 mg loses 13.125 mg of the original
mass of the isotopes in 39 days. What is the half-life of iodine-126?

Given:

I – 126: mi = 15.00 mg

mf = 13.25 mg

Quantity of substance remaining: 1.875 mg

Time elapse = 39 days

Required: half life I-126?

Solution:

Quantity of substance remaining = Initial amount x ( ½) time elapse/ half life

(1.875) = 15 x (1/2)n

1.875 = 15 x (0.5)n

15 15

= 0.125 = (0.5)n

n=3

n = 39 = 3

Answer: x = 13 days
