THE BANTAYAN SA HARI

Write-up

Built around the early 1800's, there is a historical landmark located right in the heart
of Barangay Looc—The Bantayan sa Hari. The Bantayan sa Hari or Buluarte is a majestic
watch tower that lies under the Old Mandaue-Mactan Bridge which served to protect
the townspeople from Moro pirates. During spanish colonization, spaniards built the stone
watchtower to give locals a heads up against marauders roaming the coastal area. A
bell in the tower kept the villagers informed from any danger as they would then take
refuge in the Patriach church of Saint Joseph. It was also built to guide voyages of
galleons travelling from Mexico to the Philippines and back away from pirates. The
watchtower in Barangay Looc is bigger and wider than the usual watchtower which only
spans from 15 to 20 feet. The Bantayan sa Hari is a heritage site and was one of the stops
during the annual Gabii sa Kabilin organized by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation,
Incorporation.
