1) Set the RIC to slaved mode
2) Note the indication (minus or plus)
3) Turn the heading indicator in the opposite direction of
that the RIC is showing (if the RIC is showing a deflection
to the right, turn the heading indicator to the left, if the
RIC is showing a deflection to the left, turn the heading
indicator to the right)
 Shipboard Compasses

• The Gyrocompass
– The gyrocompass is connected by cables to
gyrocompass repeaters located throughout the
ship. These repeaters use electronic servo-
mechanisms to reproduce the master gyrocompass
readings at remote locations.
– The gyrocompass has several advantages over the
magnetic compass:
• It seeks true or geographic meridian instead of magnetic
meridian.
• It can be used near the earth’s magnetic poles, where
