The ‘My Ramadhan Activity Book’ is a compilation of different activities aimed at
helping children understand the 4th Pillar of Islam (i.e., Ramadhan) and some of the
important verses, prophetic narrations (Ahadeeth) and rulings concerning it.
It must be noted that even though there are mixed age activities in this book, the
majority (i.e., mentioning goals/memorizing verses/Ahadeeth) are for ages 7 and up.
This book is only a guide and it’s up to the parents to take the responsibility to explain
the different concepts presented in this book (especially the more difficult ones) and
help guide their children through it.

We learn two things from this Ayah, that Ramadhan is:

1. The month of Fasting 2. The month of Qur’an

then let them fast an equal number of days after Ramadhan. For those
who can only fast with extreme difficulty, compensation can be made by

Allah is kind to us, he wants ease for us and not hardship.

The breath of a fasting person is a smell which is disliked among the

people, but to Allah it is better than the scent of musk because it is a
result of worship and obedience of Allah.

The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬mentioned to us many other virtues:

gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.”
[Al-Bukhari (3277) and Muslim (1079).]

of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink."”
[Narrated by al-Bukhaari]

The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬taught us that if someone swears at you or is mean to

you whilst you are fasting, then you should simply say:

I am fasting!

DAY 16
(Reading Qur’an)

Did you know? The word Ramadhan is only mentioned once in the
Qur’an! Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) says:

The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for
mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion (between right and
wrong). So, whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the
month, he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month… (2:185)
We mentioned this Ayah in Day 4 and we learnt that Ramadhan is:

The month of Qur’an

This means that a Muslim should try his best to read as much Qur’an as
he can during this month, even if it is difficult don’t give up because:
The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said that: “The one who recites the Qur'an and he is
proficient with it, then he is with the noble and blessed Angels and he
who finds it hard (to recite the Qur'an) will have a double reward."

Also, don’t forget you are rewarded ten rewards for every letter you
read from the Qur’an.
The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "[Whoever recites a letter] from
Allah's Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of
ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Meem is a letter, but Alif is
a letter, Lam is a letter and Meem is a letter."

36
Question: If your friend says: “I am reading the Qur’an and I find it very
hard, I keep making mistakes or I can’t read it nicely and can’t pronounce
some words, then I get very upset and I want to stop reading”, what advice
would you give them?

[Al-Bukhari & Muslim]
Tarawih is a special prayer that is only prayed in the night of Ramadhan
in Jamaa’ah (together). People pray late at night, hoping for Allah’s
reward and forgiveness!
It is prayed with sets of 2 Rak’ahs. At the end, we pray Witr, which
consists of an odd number of Rak’ahs.

of Ramadhan came, the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬would tighten his belt, spend the night
in worship, and awaken his family.
[Al-Bukhaari, 2024; Muslim, 1174].

The words “tighten his belt (‘Izaar)” is a phrase which means that he
would work and strive very hard during the last ten nights.

Among the things the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬did were secluding himself in I’tikaaf
and seeking Laylat al-Qadr during this time. (We will talk about this

Why is this a special night?

❖ Allah sent down the whole Qur’an at one time on this night.

There are so many Muslims around the world who are fasting now.

The number of hours that people fast in each country is different

because of the time of sunrise and sunset.

In some countries where dates are not readily available, other types of
food are eaten to break the fast.

Whilst fasting, we must remember all the poor and needy people

of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female,
young or old, and he ordered that it be given before the people went out to
offer the ‘EId prayer.
[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

One of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat means ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purify’.
Paying Zakat on your wealth purifies it and increases what remains. It
also reminds us that our wealth belongs to Allah.

Zakat ul-Fitr is a type of charity that EVERY Muslim who is able to,
must give to the poor and needy at the end of Ramadhan.
Important: It must be paid before the Eid prayer by each adult Muslim
for themselves and each member of their family.

DAY 29
(Sighting of the New Moon)
Moon Facts

In the Islamic calendar, the new crescent Moon marks the start of a
new month.

We begin our Ramadhan and end our fast at the end of the month
according to the sighting of the moon.

It takes 29.5 days for the Moon to go through all its phases.

An Islamic month can have either 29 days or 30 days. How many days in
each month depends on when the new crescent Moon is first visible.

On the 29th of each Islamic calendar month, Muslims go out after

sunset looking for the Moon.

If you can see the crescent Moon on the 29th, that month has 29 days.
If you cannot, it means that month has 30 days.

Basing the months on the sighting of the new crescent Moon means
that anyone can participate. All you need to do is look up!
