3.7.1 Introduction
Following calculation pertain to evalution of free field racking effects on station box due to
Earthquake. For racking effect, only the free-field deformation is being considered ignoring the soil-
structure interaction. This assumption is on the conservative side. the effect of soil-structure
interaction is to decrease the racking effects but even for very soft soil, the reduction is of the order
of 15% only, ref 3.

Next step of seismic design of underground structure is the establishment of racking force. Racking
force is the load required to generate the deflection estimated above. Racking force is to be applied
in following manner and the one which gives the maximum design forces is adopted.

Size of Column b x D = 1600 mm x 800 mm
Axial Load on column Pu = 29320 x 1.0 = 29320 kN
Moment in the direction of Larger dimension (Top) = 331 x 1.0 = 331 kN.M.
Moment in the direction of Larger dimension (Bott) = 331 x 1.0 = 331 kN.M.
Moment in the direction of Shorter dimension (Top) = 1085 x 1.0 = 1085.0 kN.M.
Moment in the direction of Shorter dimension (Bott) = 1085 x 1.0 = 1085.0 kN.M.

The above actual moments should be compared with those calculated from minimum eccentricity
consideration ( see 25.4 of the IS code 456:2000) and greater value is to be taken as the initial
moment for adding the additional moments.
