1. Knives

1.1 Plotter knives

Our standard plotter knives are made of high quality hard metal (HM). This guarantees high durability and
perfect cutting results. In the following chapters there will always be information provided on the knife
angles. The two most important angles are called the cutting-wedge angle (α) and the cutting angle (β).

Selecting the appropriate knife:

Generally, the flatter (smaller) the cutting angle (β) is, the better the cutting turns out to be. This is
particularly true for thin materials. A smaller cutting angle, however, increases the overlap. The overlap is
the distance between the centre of the knife and the point of intersection of the cutting edge with the surface
of the material.

The smaller the cutting-wedge angle (α), the “slimmer“ the knife tip is. A slim knife is specially suited to cut
thick materials as it penetrates the material easier. This means a higher risk of breaking the knife tip, which
again may adversely affect its durability.

With thick materials (especially with small radius) a small cutting angle (= large overlap) is
disadvantageous. Narrow curves and radius distort the contours. The same happens when the knives are
set too low.

Experience shows that double-edged knives are more durable. Through the sword-shaped blade, every
corner has an overlap in both directions, in this way the cut foil can easily be lifted out.

1.2 Flat knives

Selecting the appropriate knife:

Generally, the flatter (larger) the cutting angle is, the better the cutting turns out to be. This is particularly
true for thin materials. A smaller cutting angle, however, increases the overlap. The overlap is the distance
between the centre of the knife and the point of intersection of the cutting edge with the surface of the
material.

With thick materials (especially with small radius) a large cutting angle is disadvantageous. As a result of
small cutting angles curves do not look round. The same happens when the knives are set too low.

Experience shows that double-edged knives are more durable due to the more stable blade. Through the
sword-shaped blade, every corner has an overlap in both directions. If this overlap is not desired on the face
side of the material, then it can be cut from the rear side should the application permit it. Cutting without an
overlap is not possible!

Oscillating knives
Selecting the appropriate knife depends on the material to be cut. Should the material be fibrous then a
flattened knife is recommended. The wide cutting edge guarantees that no “fibers“ remain and are
completely removed.

If the rate of feed is too high the oscillation creates a perforated instead of an continuous line.

When using a pointed knife the rate of feed has to be drastically reduced in order to achieve good cutting
results.

This figures highlight the difference between a flat knife (fig.1) and a pointed knife (fig. 2). With a pointed
knife and constant cutting parameters parts of the material always remain uncut. Clean seperation is
therefore not possible. The cutting depth with pointed knives would have to be set much lower in order to
cut all fibers. As a result, the cutting surfaces are carved up faster and must be replaced earlier. For thin
and soft materials the use of an EOT (Electrical Oscillatung Tool) is recommended.

For hard or thick materials a POT (Pneumatic Oscillating Tolls) is suitable.

5. Resharpening service

ZÜND provides a resharpening service for certain knives. Please pay attention to the following points:

- Knives shall be collected and returned in quantities not less than 5 pcs
- Choose a functional packaging to prevent damaged knives caused through shipment
- Normally it is possible to resharp knives several times. Knives with badly damaged cutting edges
or to short knives can not be resharpened again
- The resharpening should not affect the cutting characteristics
- Resharpened knives will be returned within approx. 4 weeks after receipt
- Only original ZÜND knives will be resharpened
