Sled Hockey Lesson

On March 31st, 2022 in my Austic support classroom student

everything Thursday do a New2you activity about current events for reading
class each week. This week's event was at the Disabled Hockey Festival. The
Disabled Hockey Festival mission is to provide a fun and exciting weekend of
hockey in a grand event as well as promote and grow disabled hockey
throughout the country. The event is the largest disabled hockey event of
its kind, bringing together all of the disabled hockey disciplines in one
location.

For this activity I had students watch a video;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v04ferSewZE about a young boy from
Yellowknife, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and loves playing hockey. The
young boy had the community create an ice sled hockey team. My goal in
including this in their reading lesson was for it to have a powerful impact on
their lives to see that their disabilities can be a gift and not a defeat. To
focus of that aspect of the lesson I had students answer the following
comprehension questions below;
1. What was our video about?
2. What is special about these hockey players?
1. What is a cool fact you learned from our story?
2. How do you relate to our story?
3. Just because something looks impossible to do does it mean we
shouldn't try?
4. What is the time you tried something new?
5. How did the community coming to play sled hockey for Dylan
impact his life?
6. Are there things we can try to do for others to brighten their
day even if we don’t enjoy it?

My students all have Autism or other disabilities that impact their life
daily. This was a great part to include in their reading lesson to help create a
subject matter impact all students meaningfully in the classroom and inspire
them for their future to try for their own hope and ambition like Dylan did
in the video.
