Scheme overview
Schemes
Different buildings have different characteristics. And the requirements that need to be taken into account for the
buildings are also different. For that reason the DGNB Certification System is available for various “schemes.”
There are certificates for office and administrative buildings, retail buildings, industrial buildings, hotels, residential
buildings, mixeduse buildings and educational facilities. Only with these schemes is it possible to plan, construct,
operate and certify on a uniform basis. Further schemes are constantly being devised in working groups, e.g. for
hospitals.
How a new scheme is created?
Exactly which new schemes are to be developed depends in the first instance on the interest of the market and the
members of the DGNB. If the number of enquiries is sufficient, the DGNB office makes a recommendation to the Board
of Directors and the Technical Committee. These committees give the green light for the development of new schemes
or else reject the proposal.
The schemes are developed on a voluntary basis by members of the working group. A new working group is
set up for each new scheme. The system development department of the DGNB office is responsible for the
further organisation of the development process.
Each newly developed scheme runs through an initial application phase after is has been approved by the
Technical Committee. Auditors test the criteria and assessment methodology on the basis of concrete
projects for their suitability in actual practice.
Once the new scheme has been tested, revised and made ready for the market, the DGNB publishes all the
information that the consultants and auditors need for their work. After that the different buildings and urban
districts can be registered for certification with the DGNB.
