Learn to code, it’s more important than English as a second language

Apple CEO Tim Cook says coding is the best foreign language that a student in any
country can learn. The tech executive made the remarks to French outlet Konbini while in the
country for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. The tech leader gave some brief
thoughts on education:
“If I were a French student and I were 10 years old, I think it would be more important for
me to learn coding than English. I’m not telling people not to learn English in some form – but I
think you understand what I am saying is that this is a language that you can use to express
yourself to 7 billion people in the world. I think that coding should be required in every public
school in the world.”
Of course, it’s in Cook’s best interest to have the world learning how to code. He runs a
tech company that depends on access to a constantly growing pipeline of talent. But it could be in
your interest too: studying coding could increase your chances of pulling in a big salary. A
computer-science education, at least in countries like the US, is one of the most viable and
lucrative career paths open to young people today.
But, Cook says, the benefits go beyond that. “It’s the language that everyone needs, and
not just for the computer scientists. It’s for all of us”. He added that programming encourages
students of all disciplines to be inventive and experimental: “Creativity is the goal. Coding is just
to allow that. Creativity is in the front seat; technology is in the backseat. With the combination of
both of these you can do such powerful things now.”

The story of a blind girl

There was a blind girl who hated herself just because she was blind. She hated
everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could
only see the world, she would marry her boyfriend.
One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see everything,
including her boyfriend. Her boyfriend asked her, “Now that you can see the world, will you marry
me?”
The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was blind too, and refused to
marry him. Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to her saying: “Just take
care of my eyes dear.”

'Punctuation hero' branded a vandal for painting apostrophes on street signs

After enduring sloppy punctuation on the street sign outside his

home for more than a year, Stefan Gatward could stand it no
longer.
The 62-year-old former soldier _____(1)_____ to launch a one-
man crusade against 'dumbed down' Britain, and _____(2)_____
up a paintbrush to insert a missing apostrophe.
This _____(3)_____ the incorrect St Johns Close into the correct St John's Close.
But he was immediately _____(4)_____ of being a vandal by one neighbour, and his
amendments have been _____(5)_____ off by others who apparently prefer the wrong version.
The 62-year-old's defense of the apostrophe comes after Birmingham council announced it would
scrap the punctuation from council signs for the sake of 'simplicity'.

Mr Gatward _____(6)_____ into his flat in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, 14 months ago.
He said today: 'As we are off St John's Road and opposite St John's Church, both with the
apostrophe, St John's Close should have one too.'
But when Mr Gatward decided to correct the crime against the language by painting in the

TEXTO PARA A PRÓXIMA QUESTÃO:

Buffalo Springfield, Pearl Jam

Rock Bridge School Benefit

The annual Bridge School Benefit has featured special acoustic sets by everybody from David
Bowie and Paul McCartney to Metallica and Phish. But for the 24th edition, on October 23rd and
24th, organizer Neil Young unveiled a stunning finale: the first set since 1968 by his old band
Buffalo Springfield. “From my perspective, we just picked up where we left off many, many years
ago,” says singer Richie Furay. “It was almost like going back in time.”
Over two chilly, wet days at the Shoreline Amphitheater near San Francisco, baby boomers and
local dot-com kids gathered for a remarkable, eclectic lineup: Jackson Browne and David Lindley
tackled Bruce Springsteen’s 1983 “Brothers Under the Bridge”; Kris Kristofferson broke out “Me
and Bobby McGee”; Billy Idol revved up the crowd with a sing-along on “Rebel Yell”; and Pearl
Jam blasted through their eighth appearance at the benefit. At the end of their set, which included
“Black” and “Better Man”, Young joined them on his new tune “Walk With Me.” “We played it for
him backstage, and he said, ‘That’s basically it, but let me show you what you aren’t playing,’
”says Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard. “We _____(I)_____ an interaction with him that
_____(II)_____ a lesson in the sheer, raw love of rock.”

Gabarito:

Resposta da questão 1:
[B]

demais alternativas temos verbos no Past Participle. É importante ressaltar que come pode estar
tanto no Past Participle quanto no Simple Present devido à ausência de contexto.

Resposta da questão 3:
[D]

Continuous.

Tradução das frases:

Eu estava esperando o ônibus quando eu a vi.
As crianças estavam discutindo quando o professor chegou.
Todo mundo estava ouvindo música quando as luzes se apagaram.

Resposta da questão 4:
[C]

A alternativa [C] está correta, pois completa corretamente as lacunas com verbos no Simple
Past. Tradução do trecho: "Meu nome é Patrick.

passada definida (about six months ago).

[A]

[D]

A alternativa [D] completa corretamente as lacunas.

[E]

Tradução do
texto:
desde (since) 1993.
seguidas.
Dominicana e Chicago. Sammy é casado e tem quatro filhos.

Resposta da questão 10:

O tempo verbal mais usado é o simple past (pretérito perfeito). Como exemplos de verbos
regulares, temos:
• lived
• locked
• tricked
• hatched
• shouted

Resposta da questão 11:

1. decided
2. picked
3. turned
4. accused

Página 9 de 10
CABEÇALHO DA SUA ESCOLA AQUI

5. scratched
6. moved
7. told
8. called
9. served
10. saw

Resposta da questão 12:

[B]

“We have never had an interaction with him that wasn’t a lesson in the sheer, raw love of rock.”

passado e ainda afeta o presente.
