and Mac, then 12 and 9, the Elizabethton, Tennessee,
couple still had plenty of room in their hearts and

Ronda had heard heartbreaking stories about kids in
the system. How children would be taken from their
homes with no explanation, everything they owned
stuffed into garbage bags. Or sometimes with noth-
ing at all. But she’d been shocked to learn in class that
they would then spend hours or sometimes days at the
department of children’s services office while social
workers looked for a suitable home.
“These kids are scared to death. They need love
and reassurance,” another potential foster mom
commented to Ronda.
“Yes,” Ronda agreed. Someone needs to figure out a
better way, she thought.

Ronda was still haunted by the image of kids sitting,
frightened and alone, in cold offices when, weeks later,
she and Corey brought home their first foster child—a
9-month-old boy named Isaiah. And then one day, her
foster son’s name led her to the Bible’s Book of Isaiah.

SLIMMING SUCCESS

“I don’t want to live the rest of my life like this,” whispered Debbie
Goodrich Hoffman, shifting uncomfortably in her chair. Months before,
she’d chaperoned a field trip for her granddaughter’s middle school

19, we were not comfortable eating inside a res-
taurant. Since Red Lobster had outside seating, we
went there. There was only one other couple with a
child dining outside. We seated ourselves about 10 feet from their
table. When the waitress came to take our order, we were trying to
decide if we would split a bowl of clam chowder or each order our
own. We told her that because we were celebrating, we would each
have our own bowl. After she walked away, the couple asked us
what we were celebrating, and we told them. When it came time
to pay our bill, the waitress told us that it was paid by that young
couple. What a nice present. It made our day even more special!

“KINDNESS CAME FULL CIRCLE!”

For more than 50 years, I have had
a mission to help feed the hungry.
But aging and health prevent me from vol-
unteering with Meals on Wheels like I used
to. However, now I raise funds for the program by selling my
watercolor paintings. Recently, I had a stem cell procedure, and my
friends brought me meals this time. What a joy-filled act of kind-
ness these meals were for me. Feeding folks came full circle!

“I’M SO PROUD OF HIS BIG HEART!”

The elementary school’s book fair had
books, posters, giant pencils and more.
Our first-grader had his eye on a special poster.
Before leaving for school that morning, he carefully
pulled five dollars out of the “chore money” he had
saved. Picking him up after school, I noticed there was
no poster clutched in his hand. Had he dropped the money? Not
wanting to embarrass him if he had lost it, I gently asked where the
money had gone. His reply? “There was a girl looking at a poster
that she wanted to buy for her little sister. The girl didn’t have
enough money, so I gave her my five dollars so she could buy it.”
I am so proud of our little guy and his big heart!
