hat poor girl. The most traumatic day of her life,
and she had to spend the night on a conference room
floor! Ronda Paulson thought sadly as she and
her husband, Corey, drove home from a foster parent-
ing class in 2015. With two kids of their own, Sophie
and Mac, then 12 and 9, the Elizabethton, Tennessee,
couple still had plenty of room in their hearts and
home, so they’d decided to become foster parents.
Ronda had heard heartbreaking stories about kids in
the system. How children would be taken from their
homes with no explanation, everything they owned
stuffed into garbage bags. Or sometimes with noth-
ing at all. But she’d been shocked to learn in class that
they would then spend hours or sometimes days at the
department of children’s services office while social
workers looked for a suitable home.
“These kids are scared to death. They need love
and reassurance,” another potential foster mom
commented to Ronda.
“Yes,” Ronda agreed. Someone needs to figure out a
better way, she thought.

“I don’t want to live the rest of my life like this,” whispered Debbie
Goodrich Hoffman, shifting uncomfortably in her chair. Months before,
she’d chaperoned a field trip for her granddaughter’s middle school
class; the long bus ride and damp day had caused her joint issues to
flare—and there’d been little improvement since. Now the New York
nurse was on disability, barely able to walk. “Should we try a different
doctor?” asked her husband, Steven. Debbie tried to muster a smile.
