Lesson Idea Name: Main Idea

Grade Level/Content Area: Third Grade ELA
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE3RI2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key
details and explain how they support the main idea.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: Creative What would you like students to know and be
communicator; 1.6c able to do by the end of this lesson: I want
students to be able to determine the main idea
of the text and find details in the text to support
the main idea.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? The learning outcome of this lesson would
be for students to be able to tell the main idea of a story and use key details to support the main
idea. They will make their own podcast to tell what the main idea of a story(of their choice) is and
how they know this is the main idea.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Anchor

Description of Software: Anchor is one of the many platforms that can be used to create podcasts. It
allows you to record, edit, and arrange podcasts into episodes. It also allows users to publish their
podcasts onto different platforms such as Spotify

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by teacher
direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly practice
based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
The activity I have planned for the students is for them to create their own podcast describing the
main idea of one of their favorite books. To begin my activity, I will have students listen to the

podcast I have created. The end of my podcast introduces the topic of the podcast they will create.
In my podcast I state, “What is your favorite book and what is the main idea of this book? How do
you know that it is the main idea? Use key details in the story to support your answer.” This
statement will make students aware of the goal for their podcast. I will show students how to work
Anchor, which is a very beginner friendly tool. Then I will allow them to start writing down what they
are going to say in their podcast. I will review their script then give them permission to start
recording their own podcast. Their podcast can be anywhere from 45 seconds to 2 minutes. I will
also allow them to add music to their podcast at the end. I will walk around throughout this activity
to assist them if needed. They will turn in their podcast to me for feedback. To conclude my lesson, I
will allow them to share their podcast with a partner.
Managing student learning: Yes, the tool will shift from passive to active social learners. First, they
will listen to the short podcast I have created. Then they will be allowed to create their own and
share it with a partner at the end. Throughout the activity I will set time limits. For example, their
podcast can only be 45 seconds to 2 minutes. I will also have them show me their transcript of what
they plan to say in their podcast before they create their own.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
This activity supports the UDL framework of representation. It supports all students by providing
accessibility. The podcast allows students to listen to the lesson. Also, if the student has a hearing
impairment, the transcript provides accessibility because they can read what the podcast is saying. It
also supports the framework of engagement. Students will be engaged in creating their own
podcasts. Lastly it supports action and expression. Students need to express what they know in
different ways. Creating their own podcast will express their knowledge on the topic in a different
way other than a written assessment.
Reflection:
I think that this lesson will positively impact student learning. The lesson will be fun, but also
educational. I think they will enjoy doing this. The part of this lesson I look forward to implementing
is the part where they create their own podcast. I think that they will enjoy doing this activity and I
will enjoy listening to their podcast. Children like to do new things, and most young children more
than likely haven’t had the chance to do this.
