answer the questions below:
Answer the following and submit it to the given submission link below.

1. WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPLES OF ART?

Answer: PRINCIPLES OF ART: Balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm, unity, and variety;
the means an artist uses to organize elements within a work of art.

1. Discuss how Contrast in terms of colors (sky & moon) is emphasized in Van Gogh' work?

Answer: Vincent largely used the complementary colours red and green for his Head of a Woman.
Rather than laying them down side by side, however, pure and more or less unblended, he mixed
them, with the result that the colour contrast is not as powerful.

2.   Unity: ( Colors, brush strokes- swirling of the hills, mountains, and sky)

Answer: Unity is seen in a painting or drawing when all the parts equal a whole. When looking at The
Starry Night, you see that it is not disjointed or confusing, but uniform and consistent. Some
principles may be more obvious than others. For example, in the above painting, Emphasis is more
obvious than Variety.

3. Balance:(asymmetrical balance of the big tree and the village or the houses)

Answer: Balance is a sense of stability in the work. Balance can be created by repeating the same
shapes and by creating a feeling of equal weight. In the above painting, the large dark tree helps to
balance the bright moon in the opposite corner

4. Emphasis:(moon)

Answer: The emphasis in The Starry Night is the bright yellow moon.

5. Variety:(different objects, brush strokes & colors of the sky, moon, tree and houses)

Answer: The consistency of the lines throughout The Starry Night give it a feeling of harmony. Variety
refers to the differences in the work. Variety is achieved by using different shapes, textures, colors
and values in your work.

6.   Movement: (sky and other objects that seem to be moving like tree, mountains)

Answer: Broken, swirling lines suggest the movement of the wind through the sky. Van Gogh also
used short, circular lines surrounding the stars and moon. This helps suggest that they are twinkling.

7.   Pattern (tree, sky, village)

Answer: In "Starry Night," Van Gogh created pattern and rhythm by adding swirling wind. It adds a
beautiful flow to the rest of the painting and can almost make you feel the movement of the wind!
Van Gogh uses specific shades of colors throughout his whole painting, such as: -Shades of blue.
