LESSON 6: STAGES OF MORAL

DEVELOPMENT
Learning Activity: Individual

Where are you now in your moral development based on Kohlberg's Stages of Moral
Development? Cite some situations to illustrate your answer.

 I'd have to put myself in between the fifth and sixth stages at times. Regardless of the law, I
would frequently recognize “the other fellow's” desperate need and attempt to help, even though
this assistance is in violation of a law intended to benefit the majority of citizens. And it was
established by the majority. For example, I would be required to earn a Food Handler’s and
Preparer’s Permit, before being legally allowed to hand out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,
and an apple to homeless people. I confess I do not have this permit. However, I am much more
driven to fill a homeless person's empty stomach than to give them money to feed an addiction.
Basically, it's more about determining what is in the best interest of a person in need at the
moment I meet them than it is about poring over volumes of law books to determine whether or
not my helpful acts are "legal." I will obey the established laws that are designed to protect
people. For the most part, we must admit, our laws are enacted for the protection of most if not all
people And, I will treat folks exactly as I would hope to be treated by them. Yet, the fifth step
would require me to protest “legal” behaviors that ought to be illegal. I devoutly believe there is
no such thing as social justice. Justice is or, is not. My “moral development” would always
consider “we” before “me.” (However, I must be included in that “we.”)
