Advisory Committee Report

This semester I was the Chair of the Field Trip Committee and the Secretary of

the Promotion Committee. As the Chair of the Field Trip Committee, it was my

responsibility to figure out what days would be best for guest speakers to come and talk

with us about their professions. I also had to delegate responsibilities to my other

committee members periodically. Each person in the class was required to find their

own speaker in a specific field of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Emily

helped me create a google form to have people submit their speakers information.

As Secretary of the Promotion Committee, my main responsibility was keeping

track of spending that the committee did. I spent most of my time working on the Field

Trip Committee as the Promotion didn’t have much need for me as they didn’t really buy

things for promotional campaigns.

I spent about 7 hours in total on the field trip speaker materials. I created forms,

kept track of whose speakers were speaking when, and helped other people in the class

figure out good times to have their speaker come and talk with us. I spent far less time,

about 3 hours, on promotional materials. With the Promotion Committee I primarily

advised and offered ideas of how to promote FCS and CTE online and in person.

Through working on committees, I learned a great deal about organizational

skills. We needed to be organized at all points to stay on track. If we weren’t organized

then the whole class began to suffer as nothing could be located easily. Working on

committees also exposed me to different types of people. I was able to get to know

Emily, Janelle, Lexi, and Aubrey because of the committees I was on. I learned a lot
about how to collaborate and compromise my personal desires to better achieve the

goals of the group.

Being on a committee also gave me new opportunities to work with the public

and help create different types of events. I was able to push myself outside of my

comfort zone through Field Trip and Promotion as it required me to be more outgoing

and start conversations with new people. It also gave me the opportunity to develop

more as a professional as I collaborated with faculty at BYU-Idaho and Texas Tech

University.

I’m grateful for the opportunities I had to work on committees. I want to take what

skills I’ve gained and lessons I’ve learned and apply them in my future classrooms and

workshops. I can do this by creating committees in my own classrooms. These can go a

long way in instilling the same organizational skills, collaboration skills, and teamwork

skills in my students as was instilled in me.
