The study is about the relationship between literature and psychology.

While
psychology studies behavioural patterns of man which can be observed, literature on the other
hand projects the behaviour of man when he deals with conflicts in his environment, thus
establishing a very strong correlation between the two disciplines. The two disciplines exhibit
their mutual benefits through a successful presentation of characters and exposing the
psychological realm of human experiences in every reader.

The study also is trying to present how literature provides psychological data and vice
versa. Being able to study human behaviour help writers in describing every character in his
literary piece and at the same time it also help the readers to better understand the role
portrayed by the characters. With this we can clearly see the mutual interaction between
psychology and literature.

It is to be noted that psychology is employed when we study the effect of a literary

piece or literature itself, the soul that is brought about by the piece. It helps us broaden our
comprehension on how the story is told and not just on what kind of story is told. It sparks our
minds to perceive the experiences and pain that is beautifully laid out by the writers. We also
employ psychology when we study the writer or his individuality because most of the time, how
a piece or a story was written is basically connected to the authors background, his culture and
emotions.

The study gave me a better understanding on how the behaviour of every character in a
story is portrayed. With psychology, we will be able to study the writer’s character more
thoroughly thus giving us a clearer idea about the piece and what it is trying to depict. By
having such understanding it would be easier for a teacher to convey and teach a certain
literary piece, since in order to teach effectively, a teacher needs to understand first hand what
is to be taught.
