DIPLOMA IN MULTIMEDIA DESIGN
AND DEVELOPMENT
Prior to earning my diploma in Multimedia Design at Humber
College, I completed my bachelor’s degree in fashion in
Singapore. I worked with an Australian children’s couture
brand, Mischka Aoki, as an Assistant Designer. In 2017, I
decided to start my own bespoke fashion brand in Indonesia.
Two years into my business, I realize that I still had so much
more to explore, and now I’m in Toronto!
I believe that design is a form of communication and I always
try to expand my design skills. One of the most meaningful
lessons I’ve learned at Humber is how to be an empathetic
designer. This entails thinking of my audience first and
becoming more in-tune with the purpose and impact of the
design rather than just caring about the aesthetic.
The work-integrated course that I took at Humber also helped
me transition seamlessly from doing school work to taking
part in an internship and working with clients. I worked as a
Graphic Design Intern in the Consulate General of Indonesia
in Toronto and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, the
latter of which was thanks to Humber’s CareerConnect job
portal. Beyond the internship, the lecturers at Humber were
very proactive in finding “clients” to take part in our various
industry projects, from non-profit organizations to the City of
Toronto. These industry projects helped me get used to actual
work environments with clients and they made really unique
portfolio pieces to showcase in a job search.
Humber’s website also exposed my portfolio to the right
people in the industry which helped me secure my current
full-time job in a creative agency based in Halifax.

NORTH CAMPUS
Humber’s North Campus is located in the
northwestern part of Toronto and is easily
accessible by Toronto public transit. It is home
to more than 20,000 full-time Canadian and
international students and is also conveniently
connected to walking paths through the nature

The North Campus offers many services such as

LAKESHORE CAMPUS HUMBER CAMPUS COMPASS

Located in historic west-end Toronto on
Lake Ontario, the Lakeshore Campus provides
a stimulating and supportive study environment.
The campus is home to more than 10,600 full-

POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMIT
If you are in a program of eight months or more, you may be
eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).
WORKING WHILE STUDYING
Part-time employment opportunities are available to international
students for working both on and off campus. You can work up
to 24 hours per week on campus, or up to 20 hours per week off
campus, during regular school sessions and work full time during
scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or
reading week.
WORKING ON CAMPUS
Working on campus will help you gain valuable work experience,
learn about services at Humber and earn extra money. Most
positions are relatively flexible to your study schedule.
WORKING OFF CAMPUS
Working off campus is a great opportunity to gain first-hand
experience with a Canadian company and work environment.
You must have a valid study permit that states you are eligible

ADVANCED DIPLOMA, GAME PROGRAMMING
Video games have always been a part of my life, but
I never thought of making a career out of it. Until
one day I was playing a Ubisoft game and it inspired
me to follow a path in the video game industry.
Game Programming is a video game-focused program,
but the skills you learn are transferable to other industries.
Depending on your career goals, you can either choose to
work for a video game studio or a software developer.
Thanks to Humber’s networking opportunities, I landed
my first job while I was still in my first semester. For
the past three years, I have worked with two different
companies as a game developer and a junior developer.
Since 2019, I have been working part-time as a
programmer for UP360, a start-up based in Toronto.
During the same time, I also worked as a Peer Tutor at
Humber College and initiated an ongoing project that
involved the Faculty of Media & Creative Arts and the
Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation. The goal was
to build a financially affordable breath controller that
would help people who have motor neuron disease
so they can interact more easily with video games.
I also represented Humber College at hackathons
across North America, such as Hack the North,
BostonHacks and MHacks. These hackathons helped
me gain new skills and also provided me with the
opportunity to work with real-world issues.

My experience participating in my two online courses at Kansai
Gaidai University (KGU) have been phenomenal. My motivation
to join the KGU course was mainly due to my drive to travel, and
currently with the global pandemic, I am unable to travel, and this
allowed me to experience the culture and education while being at
home in Canada. I now have more experience working with different
cultures, and a better understanding of virtual meeting, and work.
In many ways, words cannot describe the benefit it has had for me
as it has changed my outlook on my own studies as a student at
Humber, and the way I will be working professionally in the future.

My first semester went very well, although I had a few difficulties.
Coping with online classes was a struggle for me initially because
it was my first time doing so, and it was difficult for me to learn
from the online sessions. Maybe it was because I’m accustomed
to in-person classes and the fact that I really liked in-person lab
classes where I had a far better understanding of the lessons.
However, one thing I am proud of is how I was able to cope and
adapt to everything very quickly here at Humber. I found everyone
friendly and every aspect of the college experience enjoyable just
after a few weeks of classes.
My experience at Humber so far has been worth it because I am
experiencing new things by breaking out of my shell and learning
the importance and value of exploring and being sociable. Every
day is a new learning experience for me here at Humber and
I truly enjoy it. I am hoping for newer learning and even more
experiences in the rest of the semesters.

My path to getting accepted into Humber and getting into
Canada was quite long and strenuous at times. First, I had
to make sure I could get the medical care that I needed in
Canada as I have a disability. Secondly, immigration wasn’t
easy due to language barriers. My family was also afraid
to let me go as this was my first time travelling on my own,
let alone to another country without knowing the outcome.

I currently work as an IT Solution Developer at TD Bank. The Ontario
Graduate Certificate in Information Technology Solutions allowed me
to improve my experience and knowledge of open source technol-
ogies. An international education has helped me apply my skills
to existing business challenges in the work force and I’ve received
seven Spotlight Awards and one Starlight Award since graduating.
Humber’s teaching approach and topics are unique because it
incorporated a balance of hands-on and theoretical knowledge
and business communication skills, whereas back in Russia it was
purely theoretical.

However, once I eventually arrived in Canada, I felt very relaxed
as everyone was so nice, helpful and very kind overall.
I chose to learn English at Humber so that I could communicate
well with my colleagues and teachers, eventually complete
university studies in Canada, and get into medical school to help
similar kids in my position who have a disability. The pandemic
certainly put a strain on my life, as I had the virus and had to
isolate. I also found it a lot harder in terms of learning during the
pandemic because online is less interactive. However, I do enjoy
the fact that the government and Humber really do care. I was
able to find support through many avenues during these hard
times such as Humber’s Accessible Learning Services which has
been great to me helping me get a laptop to continue my studies
during the pandemic. In addition, they gave me more information
in regards to getting help financially. If I can point to something
I’m proud of, I would say my quick learning skills and networking
skills which helped me make a life for myself. I am already a
permanent resident of Canada, I now have a job, I have many
good friends and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

DIGITAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
I was concerned initially about the cold in Canada as well as the
overall adjustment. However, things eased for me when I found
the Black Academic Success and Engagement (BASE) program. I
found out more about it and started volunteering there because I
like what they’re about – focusing on Black students and ensuring
that Black students have a space at the college. Being in a
multicultural city, I really value that, but sometimes I want to be
with my own people from my own culture.
I took part in workshops, talks and general conversations in the
BASE office which eventually led to my hiring as a special projects
assistant. I worked my way up to program assistant and made a
positive impact welcoming students at the BASE front desk.

MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS
I arrived in Canada late because my visa was delayed, so I
missed the Orientation. I was scared about finding my way
around the campus and making new friends. But soon that
fear vanished, as I met many students in my classroom. We
started working on group projects and became good friends in
just a few weeks as everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

Canada has a lot of opportunities for international students and
the program lessons are very detailed; we learn everything from
basic skills, like how to use each knife properly and to build a
dish correctly, to the emerging trends in Canada. The program also
helps you to develop your own cooking style and put your skills in
practice including serving a four-course menu for guests at the
Humber Room.
We also participate in many events hosted by Humber. These
events give us the opportunity to connect with the culinary industry,
including the country’s best chefs. Students are often competing in
on-campus, national and international competitions as well, which
gives the chance to showcase our skills and techniques.
In the middle of my first semester of my diploma in Advanced
Journalism, I realized that I wanted to pursue my passion
for social media. I decided to switch my program to a
diploma in Advertising and Marketing Communications. My
new program was exactly what I was looking for; I studied
digital marketing and social media, and also how advertising
and marketing work in Canada. In the last semester, our
professors took us to visit different marketing agencies, which
gave us a chance to network with industry professionals,
learn about their jobs, and help us secure internships.
For my capstone project, I worked together with my
classmates. Our group created a marketing campaign for
BMW, to promote their vehicles. It was a fun project and a
great way to meet industry professionals. I was fortunate
to secure an internship at Art Metropole, a not-for-profit
organization. I was working with their social media team; I
learned many new skills such as how to run email campaigns
and distribute publication materials. I also gained knowledge
of diverse social media tools, and a few design skills.
