Aim: To assess the degree of internet addiction among undergraduate students.

1.2: Objectives
1.2.1. General objective
Main objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of internet
addiction among Arsi University dinsho campus.

1.2.2 Specific objectives

The Specific objectives of the research includes:-

 Examine the effect of internet use on the academic performance of the students.
 Investigate the problems that militate against the student’s access to the internet.
 Investigate the frequency of internet use among students.
 To identify possible differences in the purpose of Internet use among adolescents with
respect to age subgroup, country of residence, and gender and the distribution of Internet
addiction across age subgroups.
 To determine if there is a correlation between the purpose of Internet use and age and if
this interaction influences the level of addiction to the Internet.

1.3: Expected outcomes

our study shows a strong significant result, there are improvements that could be applied by
future researchers. We noted that out respondents are students within the institution, hence,
future research can expand this study by obtaining access to other institution so as to gain a
wider perspective. In conclusion, this study helps to improve our understanding reasons to the
deterioration of students’ academic performance. This study provides the foundation for future
research that would help educators to understand the relationship of internet addiction and
emotional instability to academic performance. It provides a guideline to developed potential
strategies that would enhance the students’ performance by understanding their emotional state
and the effect of internet addiction.

1.5: Introduction
Internet addiction is an increasing problem among university students. The Internet provides
numerous educational advantages, but too much Internet use can lead to unfavorable outcomes
such as social isolation and poor academic achievement.

One of the problems that the Internet has created is a virtual addiction or addiction to the global
web world causing adverse psychological behavioral effects on the users. One of the groups at
higher risk for Internet addiction is teenagers, and since Internet addiction will lead to academic
failure in students, evaluating it among them and its relationship with signs of mental disorders
seems necessary. Therefore, the aim of this research was to study Internet addiction and its
relationship with the symptoms of mental disorders.

we will conducts to research on Internet addiction among the undergraduate students in Arsi
University in case of dinsho campus.

Internet addiction is a common problem in our university students and negatively affects
cognitive functioning, leads to poor academic performance and engagement in hazardous
activities, and may lead to anxiety and stress. Behavioral addictions operate on a modified
principle of the classic addiction model. So the present study aimed to assess the prevalence of
internet addiction and associated factors among university students in Arsi University in case of
dinsho campus.

So the present study aimed to assess the prevalence of internet addiction and associated factors
among university students in Arsi University in case of dinsho campus.

 Internet addiction was significantly associated with using internet at the college, spending 5 h or
more using the internet per day, and using the internet for social networking.

University students who reported using the internet for social networking were more likely to be
addicted to the internet compared to those who used it for academic purposes.

an excessive amount of time spent on the internet serves as a distraction from schoolwork. This
situation puts students at a disadvantage in as far as academic productivity is involved

Internet addiction and problematic use of internet impact negatively on the individual and
community well-being, more so among adolescents and young people. For university students,
this condition has the potential to affect their academic performance and social interaction. This
paper aims to describe the prevalence of problematic and addictive internet use among
undergraduate .

1.5.1Research Questions

The following research questions were formulated to guide this study:

 What is the frequency of internet use among the students?

 How useful is the internet to students in their daily academic activities?
 Which is the most used internet service?
 Do the internet services influence students’ academic performance?
 What are the problems faced by students in using internet services?

1.6: Related Research

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among Wollo University students from
April 10 to May 10, 2019. A total of 603 students were participated in the study using a
structured questionnaire. A multistage cluster sampling technique was used to recruit study
participants.

A research conducted by Hamzah (2007) found that the higher the level of anxiety among
college’s students, the lower their marks in their end-of-semester examination. A similar study
conducted among high school students in the United States found that anxiety appeared to be the
major factor in their failure in the Basic Standards Tests (McCraty et al, 2000).

Other researchers also found similar results (Luigi et al., 2007; Sena, Lowe & Lee, 2007). In
order words, the level of anxiety has a negative association with academic performance. Stress,
pressure or tension, are another signs of emotional instability. One study found that stress
negatively related to academic performance, i.e. the higher the level of stress, the lower the
academic performance (Samaha & Hawi, 2016). When the students spent excessive time on the
internet, they have limited time to study, hence, the students’ stress level increased.

1.7:Methods
In this study the researcher will have used a questionnaire that contain both open as well as
closed ended question that will be distributed to students Arsi university dinsho campus.
Questionnaire will be selected to collect primary data because it helps the researcher to collect
attitude, opinion and suggestion of respondents.

This research will use the sample selected to collect data in order to find out what the
Effect of Internet addiction among university undergraduate in Arsi University.

In this study the researcher will use both quantitative and qualitative survey data
collection methods. Two data collection instruments will use for sake of extracting data and
increase the breadth of information. The data collection instruments included
questionnaires and semi structure interview guides. In questionnaire which is both open
ended and close ended questions will be included.

1.7.1Questionnaire
In this research we will use both open ended and close ended questions are use.

We will be using open ended questions in order to find out more information’s from the
sample selected and for collecting amore defined and specified data we will use close ended
questions .we selected a total of 10 student’s five from section A and five from Section B
computer science department students in ARU.

1.7.2 Interview
We will use face to face interview with the students that are sampled for the interview it
will be simpler to understand and it will be easy for the researcher to add and deduct the
interview questions depending on the situation.

1.7.3 Observation
We will use observation to understand from the situations the students are in.

In addition, primary data will have been collected using structured and unstructured direct
personal interview that conducted students Arsi university dinsho campus because interview
provides an opportunity for interviewer to ask follow up question and also help respondent to ask
clarity if there are any ambiguity in the questions.

1.8:Research Requirements
The resources that will be needed for the conduct this research are:

ms word,flash,laptop, Printing paper,pen ,info .etc

these are some hardware, software, data, personnel needed for the this research.

In order to use our time effectively and accomplish activities in their precedence we have arrange
