YOU ARE A TEACHER

A poem interpretation

The poem wants us to see the things behind the assumptions we already have
about teachers and being a teacher. It reminds us that no matter how exciting and alluring
the teaching materials we choose and use, using those unwisely is only a waste of time
and effort. It is the same with coming to class unprepared. A good teacher always assures
that what she teaches, she delivers it with knowledge and do not pretend to know
everything because every teacher believes that there will always be a massive space in
their head that needs to fill up with knowledge.

We always encounter strict teachers and have high standards that most of us
dislike. We always say things behind their back, yet we never see the bright side of it. A
teacher’s love is different from the love we usually receive. Teachers show their love by
bringing out the best of us by imposing high expectations and standards because they
want us to break the walls we built around us. They want us to be the best version of
ourselves.

Teachers are always patient, calm, and professional. They never crosses the line,
even if they are on the verge of anger. They endure everything, even the grating
complaints of parents towards them. They never get tedious to study because they are
doing it for the sake of their students. They never want their students to leave the
classroom without learning something, and they never lose hope that their students will
be successful someday.

Teachers are not perfect. They have flaws. They experience an emotional
breakdown - they get frustrated, angry, and tired. But a teacher’s love will always be
genuine and warm because she was blessed and chosen by the Divine to serve and teach.
